hi everybody -my first post as a newbie though i have been a fan of the site for the past few months.

just got a new VZ ss ute and was wondering about running in the motor,, (before u drill me i have searched and read all the posts) though am still a bit unsure. because of conflicting views

1. The dealer said just drive how i want to. its already run in.

2. the post with the link to the motorcycle guy who has run in over 300 engines. says run em in hard.

3. my dads mates say take it easy for first 1000km.

4. and my mates say 3000rpm for first 500km, 4-5000 up to 1000km, then give it hard or the computer will get used to going slow.

with all these opinions i would rather hear from some pros on what option they think is the better, and does the computer really program how your engine will work in the future ?

bit confused ??

from all the people here and other owners of ls1, majority recommend driving it the way you would normally drive. Dont take it easy if you aim to drive it hard later on (i think this way, if something comes up, you'll b able to get it fixed under warranty anyway).

and follow the tips in the user manual, like not sitting constantly at 100kmph etc etc

Warm it up, follow the run in procedure in the manual for the first 1500, then get into it.....after its warmed up.

Search for "drive it like u stole it" hehehehe.

I picked my new SS up a few weeks ago, I've driven it like I normally drive. As HRT Stroker says just make sure it's warm before you give it some but that probably goes for whether it's new or not.

Most of all enjoy it. They are sensational..!

Normally a good idea to try to load the motor up for short burst without letting it rev too high for example floor it going up a hill at 60kmh in a gear that is too high, may be a bit harder if you have an auto as it will kick down

Dunno about a running in technique, but that'll sure tell you whether you've got a tuning problem or not. ie if anything's out it'll ping it's t*ts off

I ran my engine in - I did basically things you mention in option 4 and did not WOT unless warm till over 1500kms ..... my LS1 did end up nice and free and in words of my tuner "this engine has no right to be putting out 240rwkw with these mods".

So who knows but IMHO there must be something to it.

Went easy on her for the first 500km and flooged her ever since. Being an A4 I just left her in power mode for most of her first year and made sure she hit redline every now and then from standing starts.

Naturally all this is once the engine has warmed up and been driven a little first. In terms of warming up I use my instant economy gauge and wait till consumption drops down to 3L prior to moving off the driveway.

Just hope it doesn't do what my "new" engine has done ... about 3/4litre of oil in 1000km ...
