Could be a busted timing chain? Ask STATIE about those - he knows all about them. ;)

Fuel pump failure certainly isn't uncommon...

a few mechanic friends of mine warned me about the VT fuel pumps which would fail if you ran your fuel tank close to empty consistently. Not sure if this problem carried over to later models

I've been filling her with a quater tank of PULP for most of her life. She get's a full tank perhaps once or twice a year. No problems so far.

I was told the same thing. The reason given was the pump is liquid cooled and with no liquid (ie fuel) it overheats and can fail. Same reason VN/VQ/VR/VR ones fail

yep what voodoo said and my mate measured the temp of the fuel in the tank only1/4 after sitting in trafic all day and the fuel was amazing 67 deg c in the tank.
when he got on the free "not" way and with a full tank it droped to 38 deg c now that is food for thought may b a full tank at the drags is better than a quater or less and a surge tank is better again ? :)

i use to always keep the tank over a 1/4 to keep it cool as others have explinaed on here before. My first fuel pump died just as cosmo_VYss_II explained it. That was at about 85-90K Km. So i have just given up and now run the tank low then refill. That way i only need to make 1 fuel stop per week. I will get back to you in 80,000 km and let you know if never letting it go too low helps prolong the life of the fuel pump or not :D

Cheers
Rob

Bingo. Although you'd hope they would have fixed it by the VY2 model. Had my old VT2 R8 die in Leichart one night a couple of years ago. NRMA guy came and check the fuses. No worries. Then he whips out a rubber mallet, goes around to the back of the car, tells me to start cranking, and proceeds to bash the underside of the fuel tank.

Lo and behold, she fired up! Took it to holden for a "warranty" replacement the next day. Heard rumours of a hush-hush style recall/replacement on them. I just got unlucky.

Just get the pump replaced, if that's what they reckon it was, and you should be right.

almost the exact same thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago.
crossing Swan St bridge, here in Melb, and chug chug die.... no power.
called RACV. i mentioned it was getting a bit low on fuel..... but i had run it much lower in the past. he checked the fuses. and the fuel pump fuse had blown. he popped a new one in, and added 10L of fuel to the tank...... and it started up. ran a bit rough for a minute, but was then fine.
i think the fuel pump just got a bit too warm and started to draw too much current for the fuse to handle.
everything seems good now. i just wont run the fuel so low in the future.

Sometimes the hoses from the pump to the engine come off also. The symptoms are the same but you will smell fuel when you try to crank it over. I managed to pump about 10L out onto the ground underneath me in the dark one night on a major highway intersection. Glad there were no smokers driving past...........
