View Full Version : 427 torque + sticky track = diff boom!

This is what happens with a 427 with a small cam making mountains of torque

http://www.gimmecarparts.com.au/images/wagon/diffbroken.jpg

First run of the day at WSID, did a nice burnout, took off from idle (no dumping or revs) and floored it. Went no-where, axle tramp city, backed off changed it to 2nd, back on power and bang, snapped the shaft.

HUGE thanks to Sonny for getting my car back to his workshop, getting it fixed and me back on the road to Canberra in a few hours time. You're a champion Sonny

Just time to stop axle tramp, plenty of cars running tens on std drive shafts.

I've had the Nolathane bushes put in to try and stop it. Never had axle tramp before I got the 427. With 865 nm under 3000 rpm it makes tons of torque down low, plus the wagon weighs 1845 kg! Doesn't help it getting off the line.

Lucky its only the shaft and a quick fix.
Im surprised the bolts didnt break off first.

Sonny - you Bast@#d you gave him to much power and look what happened. :booty: Just kidding mate. Excellent effort fixing it up on a sunday. Thats some top shelf customer service.

Drew- Noooooooo, i would have cried if that was my car. Looks like wednesday its off to wsid for you. It will be good to see what this thing can run. If you ever get sick of the package you can always dump it my bonnet.
Hopefully this will be your last mechanical issue for a while.

Polyeureathane bushes? They have next to no give, making things worse.

Like said rubber has more flex, so chances are the rubber takes the obsortion, if too much it will split the rubber. Maybe you should try solid bushes, I hear they give a nice bumpy ride.

Uncle Tone,

If you hate it so bad a quick and simple search on the topic within the forum should allow you to see the light at the end of the tunnel.....!

I have had numerous posts on the topic for over a year and have grabbed the bull by the horns and formulated a solution that doesn't compromise the cars "streetability" by making it too stiff.

Good luck.

Not only that, but leaving the private day early to fix the wagon, rather than staying out there and completing all his runs. Impressive.

Cheers,
- Febs.

I've had an "Anti-tramp" kit fitted to my wagon too, but it still tramps. Had a rear camber kit and new shocks fitted too.

What shocks and springs are you running? I highly reccommend a decent set of shocks.

I'm running Bridgestone S03's at the moment. When I first got it back from the shop, it tramped really badly. So, I dropped my rear tyre pressure, and the amount of tramping reduced a bit. I'm running ~35psi (240kPa).

(Bridgestone Tyre Centre gave me 40psi on the passengers side front and back and 37psi on the drivers side front and back go figure...)

P.S. Exhaust goes in tomorrow, Thanks Drew.

Looks similar to some of mine.. torque has to go somewhere.. i might suggest carrying a spare to the track drew.. i do and i haven't broken one since... :hmmm:

Standard suspension apart from new bushes. Didn't want to go to expense of new shocks/springs, but may have to. I never had tramping issues with the 410, I can only asssume it's because the 427 is making so much more torque.

That LS2 exhaust will go great :)

Have someone check your CV shafts too mate. Found a fair bit of free play in mine (now replaced - but not tested yet), and that might emphasize the tramp you are feeling. Might also explain why you are getting it now and not before.

Another question, are you sure it's axel tramp and not clutch shudder. I'm still trying to learn the difference in the feeling between the two, as clearly both shake the drive line.

My 2c on shocks/springs would be to decide what you want to do. If you want to post a good strip time, then go get a setup specifically for the strip. Folks down your way should be able to set you up. Don't get a set of street/circuit shocks and springs, as they won't improve your strip situation.

Thx for the advice. It's definitely not the clutch, I've got a new Textralia in there :) I can't believe how bad the tramping was at the strip, especially never having experienced it in my car before. It doesn't really happen on the street but if I ever want to go to the strip again I've either got to get it sorted first or baby it off the line.

I don't care about the strip time, it was just out of curiosity I went - I have a fair idea what it'll do. It's performance on the street that I care about.

yeah, i figured that!!

what does the spline hook up to? is it the tailshaft or the axle?

KeenGolfer

This was done on Toyo Proxes RA1 tyres.

vh-holden, I wouldn't have known unless I watched Sonny change it. Those splines are inside the diff centre, with the large round end plates pressed against the side of the diff housing. These mate to the CV axles (is that what they're called?). You can see in this pic the end plate on the broken spline bolts up to the end of the CV shaft (same 6 hole bolt pattern).

Don’t give up on the track Drew. Use the clutch…. It’s built for it. Just slip it and engage it the best you can, you can do this all the way through first gear if you like… You won’t hurt it at your current HP and RPM level and general street driving will still remain the same.

That axel was probably just about shot anyway. But please, in future…. Use the clutch for what it’s good at and not your drive train. :)

i will back plan B all the way on that Drew
i also run big cubes but with a blower, with my textralia clutch i leave the line at 5000rpm slipping the clutch and feeding the power in with precision,i am now able to run 1.5 60 footers and since useing this brand clutch i have never brocken anything.
As to my knowledge there are no other clutches on the market that allow you to slip the guts out of them when you need to and grip like nothing else when the need is there. and are as foregiving on your drive line as the textralia.
i also second the fact that the drive shaft was probably already on its way out!

Textralia sounds like a ball tearer!!! 1.5 60 fts!!! Awesome!!!
 Looks for money tree having just purchased a new clutch prior to Textralia annoucement...

I've got a single plate ceramic which is fantastic on the street (easy on the leg, no shudder) and is just fine on the circuit. Only place it "wants" is on the launch at the strip. If I slip it too much, it goes to mush (slips by itself), and if I give it a boot full after fully engaging at low RPM it slips under the torque (great sparks show for the track officials as it tears up the flywheel) until everything comes up to speed. This has been dramatically amplified by the ET Street Radials.

What is different in the Textralia clutch plate material or pressure plate design that allows it to be slipped so aggressively, yet still clamp so well?

the tramp you experienced would have been due to extra traction that you recieved on the strip ,that you cant be getting on the street .
AS A RULE OF THUMB WORK ON THE MORE THE TRACTION THE FIRMER THE REAR SHOCKS ! the less traction the softer the shock ,do this and you will have no tramping isues .{stock shocks for the street, custom valved for the strip} ;)

mate this is a secret that textralia has in its clutch design that has all the other clutch companys "CLIMBING THE WALLS AT THE MOMENT"
