Hi All,

I am considering purchasing a Monaro, but am undecided as to whether to buy a second hand GTS Coupe, or hold off and wait to see if the current shape Monaro is released with the LS2. What are people's opinions?? Would you get a LS1 GTS Coupe or a LS2 Monaro??

If you ask me i think the GTS wil get more looks. and its not the LS1 as such but the C4B engine. which is still quicker/as quick as the LS2's.

WOW a CB4 engine HAY! do you realise that those engines cost HSV about $27,000 each and the only internal differance is a light cam and a light touch on the ports ,besides that they are a ordanary ls1 like what is bought by holdens.
So thats where your paying the big bucks for a GTS ,in a engine that is not much differant then a stocky with a good tune.
  LIKE WHO CARES IF IT WAS PUT TOGETHER BY "GOD" OVER IN THE STATES who charge a fortune for there name
buying a stock monaro and spending $27,000 on it would see you into the 10's on the strip
buying a GTS which will cost you more then a monro+$27,000 and will probably get you a 13 sec car
I KNOW WHICH ONE I WOULD BE DOING !!!!!!!!

All true Big Shaun ... but it depends what your after. If you want a car that does 10 second quarters then go the Monaro and spend a packet on it. But the GTS is always going to be something special, not everyone is after the faster beast down the 1/4 for the best price possible ... if they were, HSV would be out of business and Holden wouldn't be able to make enough SV8's.

If it were me, I'd prob go the GTS. The C4B coupled with sorted suspension and big brakes... winner in my book. Looks mean as well. And the fact that it is a GTS. What was one of the biggest guns in Australian motoring....

But at the end of the day its personal preference. As long as you don't bitch or moan whichever way you go, no-one can ever have a go at you for it. Good luck deciding... I wish I was in your position :( (I'm a 72 Ford driving uni student, but a Holden fan since I can't remember when.)

If you're not in any hurry...wait,...see what a 6lt monaro comes out with,...the price on the 2nd hand GTS aren't going to go higher !!! Compare the two, then make your call.
When it comes to sell either one, the newer 6lt. monaro or older GTS is then someone elses dilema !! :) good luck

If you can find a well priced 2004 GTS coupe, I'd go for that over a brand new Monaro. I realised the mistake I made after I baught my car, when I saw one in the $60'sK. They are harder to find because from my understanding they were only available on special order.

Why a 2004 model? Because it came fully loaded from factory. Xenon's, Ohlins adjustable suspension, tyre pressure monitor system, AP brakes (both cross drilled and slotted), power steering cooler ... they also came with the CB4 which has a few more goodies over the LS1 despite what people say, LS6 heads, bigger stainless steel valves, etc etc etc, and it was mafless tuned from the factory. Also the M6's came with 3.9 gears in the rear ... Because it was a special order vehicle there is a lot less of them around .. in the long run they'll hold their value better IMO.

So if you can find one at a good price, go for a 2004 GTS Coupe M6. Reflecting back thats what I should of done. But I'm picking up the GTO in about a week, still happy about it. Also done heaps of research and spoken to a lot of people. Only real reason I'd see someone wanting to go for an LS2 over an LS1 (if youre going to modify it) is that in the states they can now dry-sleeve and LS2 to 7.0L 427ci, something which can only be done by wet-sleeving the LS1 (which i wouldnt do because of the associated problems, leaks etc) ... u cant get a reliable dry-sleeved LS1 to that size.

So if you're not looking at doing a wild stroker (like 427ci ... i might be ;) ) on the alloy block, then you can pretty much do the same thing to the LS1 as you would to the LS2. End of the day it's a coupe, you'll be happy with either choice. But if you can stretch the few thousands more and find an 04' GTS coupe ... I'd go for that just because it comes with every option available (except maybe sunroof, that most purchasers would of added anyway), and the extra boot space ... A nice impulse blue, black, or yellow GTS would be the go :)

Either way you go, you'll be happy,

I found this to be a hard decision , but im very happy with my GTS , bought it 12 mths ago for 64k (02) whats it worth now 58-60K maybe a little more.Id love an LS2 as well , but I did a cam change , exhast and edit =309 rwkw, the things a beast.Ive pulled up next to a few 6.0lt coupes and there is always a look of oh shit look at that on there face then when you take off.....You will never regret owning a GTS coupe but you may regret it if you by something else.Mind you I think either way you will be happy.

If it was me, definatly the GTS.
Its a nicer all round package, got the looks, and the go to back it up.
And you wouldnt have to even modify it, comes with all the goodies. :)

and gee here i ws thinking people fork out 100K when they could just buy stock monaro and spend all that other 'wasted' money on modding it. Has any one ever heard of a C4B engine getting piston slap? i personally havent.

Thanx for the reply and info guys!

Now that I have a few opinions, I will give my thoughts.

I am leaning more towards the GTS as many have said that it has all the goodies loaded in already as well as the street cred. The Monaro would be tempting as it would be a new car and have the LS2. But at the end of the day it will not be a GTS and although you could spend some $$ on it to make it quicker than the GTS, I know which one will be better to cruise in. Both are fantastic cars, but I think that the GTS is now at a price that makes it damn tempting.

Also, there is no point saying that the GTS is now slower than the LS2 as we all know that Holden and HSV love to sell you a car and then sell the next generationn model with more power makiing your new ride slower / worth less etc. It's the nature of the beast...

Black or Yellow..that's the chocie to make.

Thanx again all!

cheers mate

Hey Hooky , nice ride isnt it. After 12mths I still walk out my front door and that huge :D still appears.Mate , mine failed an oil consumption test, so was rebuilt .I was lucky that I had a very good dealer who allowed a few different internals , cam 232/232 ,valve springs, timeing chain , fly cut pistons to take that size cam or bigger (was going 242, should have). Other mods are 1.75 ceramic coated Pace maker 4 into 1,s , twin 2.5 system, Clutch - Sams ceramic plate , which is a must I recon even on a stock GTS.Unless you drive like a pussy.Ripshift - another must for any M6, unless you drive like a pussy. Sam did the tune which I have always been happy with, its needed a few minor adjustments , but that comes with the terrortorry I think. On his dyno it made 303 when just rebuilt , 304 about 10 months later and with a couple of minor changes 309 rwkw or 417 hp (I think).I love it , its run 116.79 mph , the clutch is a little to heavy but you get used to it. The heads are standard. Its a whole different ball game with the cam , if its a beast you want that cams a beauty , but im shaw with 22? cam 280-300 will still be a big difference. For the money ive spent on mods , im stoked , thats another advandage the GTS has , its all done , just need a cam and exhaust and a good tune ,done GTS beast.

Hey Keen
How is your sound system coming along? Did you sort out the tune on the amps? What was the cause of the stoppage at Eastern Creek?
Oh and go around and beat up a mate of mine in Manly would ya? He is thinking about buying a WRX over a Monaro/GTO/GTS. He's in a wheelchair so you won't have any problems dealing with him.
Cheers

Hey VZ , I havent done anything about the stereo as yet , still got your mates number there , believe it or not my car was turning off down the track when changeing gears and the car keys which was a big bunch would swing to the point of breifly turning off the ignition????NOTE TO ALL JUST RACE WITH ONLY CAR KEY IN. As far as bashing your mate in the wheelchair.....might be a better job for someone like........Tuna  :booty:
