Hi all,(1st post. Have tried searching)
Thinking about upgrading my wheels on my Monaro. Will 20's fit with standard suspension setup and slightly lowered or do you need to go the coilover rout.
I realise lipping guards will probably be needed but what else.
Also whats's the widest tyres tyre size people are running on the rear without any mods except lipped guards??
Hi CV8-RO,
I have seen a couple of Monaro's with 20s on them all running standard suspension (slightly lowered). The ones I've seen have either been running 235 or 245 tyres.
I'm also looking at getting some 20s for my VY and have been assured they fit without any mods to the suspension. Coilovers obviously would be a better option due to being adjustable, but a standard setup works fine.
Hope this was of some help to you.
Cheers,
Matt

20s should fit. Mate has them on a GTO its fine. Go for a run over to John at Tempe. He would tell you what the best way to do it and they also lip the guards. They will look after you there.

Fairly certain you need coil overs on the front if you go larger than 19"
Ive got 245/35/19's and they dont rub at all. I had 265/35/18's on the back for a while and they touched sometimes on big bumps :)

eerrr WTF?? You need to roll the guards and fit coilovers up front to get em in. You definately need some mods for them to fit. There is another thread with this info in it.

Ok, disregard what I said then.
I have seen a Monaro with 20" rims and standard suspension up front, thanks for shooting me down anyway. :o

You definatly need coil overs on the front to fit 20's or the inside of the tyre rubs on the bottom of the strut, although there is one yellow monaro running around on 20's that has had a little chopping work done to the strut I think... I gather it did the job
Also beware the load & speed rating on the tyres you buy, make sure they are equal or above the rating for your vehicle as per the sticker inside the drivers door, theres a few tyres places out there that will try to sell you thinner tyres so they dont rub, but that normaly means that they dont meet the speed rating, trust me ive been there 235/35/19 "no good", and thats the 1st thing the cops look for these days, its the easiest unroadworthy they can find.

SLY,
Is that the case on say a VY SS as well? I was told no modifications would be needed so maybe I need to check that one out. :bash:

It sure is..... they will definatly not fit, we had one of our ute guys buy a set of 20' after being told they would fit and they didnt, those wheels are now on that yellow monaro.
Who told you they would fit ?

Just a local wheel/tyre shop, would a different offset help or is it not going to happen regardless?
Great, more money to spend.

Dont get me wrong, Tempe have great deals, BUT unfortunatly they will tell people anything to get the sale, so do your homework.
Examples were
The friend of mine they sold 20's to saying they would fit no probs without any mods, and they didnt.
Then they sold me my current wheels with the 235/35/19's on the front which do not meet the VY SS placecards speed rating even after I told them what they were going on.

if u get the right offset and 235 tyres they will fit. i had a vx with superlows up front and all i did was roll the gaurds a bit. if u are lowering it just a bit it will be fine but as i said it has to be the right offset. i put mine on myself and had no problems

Thanks for the info guys.
I've seen a few holden dealers selling monaros with 20's on them and thought they must fit ok. But i recently had a look at a vz monaro with standard height suspension in a holden yard and noticed one of the rear tyres was chewed out a bit on the outside edge even though the guards had been rolled. The guards also looked a bit rough in certain places where the tyre could have possibly rubbed (or maybe a bodgy lipping job)Tyres were 245/35/20. Surely you can fit wider than 245 without doing more than lipping the guards and it won't rub.

I have 20inch rims under my vt clubsport standard suspension. All i have is .6mm spacers in the front between the mag and the hub sold to me by my local quickfit dealer. And rolled gaurds they are 245 40 20,s.

I have to say that I have personally fitted 20's to vy and onwards and they fit with out mods. This is said however keeping in mind correct offsets and sizing is a must. Anything pre vy they dont fit with out using spacers or modifying the front struts. Feel free to flame me but I know it works ;)
Cheers
Paul.

Wheel spacers are not legal in South Australia, and I presume most other states also.
