My car has this clunking noise coming from the rear. Sitting in the back seat windows down I have noticed it is coming from the right hand rear wheel area.

It happens regardless of whether the car is going forwards or backwards, turning either way or in a straight line. The clunks speed up ever so slightly as the car speeds up.

The car has done this 3 times over the last year, each "time" goes for a few weeks, where it then mysteriously stops happening :bash:

Also who do you suggest I get to investigate the problem given:

Holden dealer - couldn't work it out without pulling the car apart
Mates tyre shop - "its definently the diff"
Diff shop - "doesn't sound like something a diff would do"

When I had a similar sound comming from my VN commy, I thought it was the diff as well, but took it to my local mechanic and found out it was the Tail Shaft.
Maybe your prob is the tail shaft as well?

Some people I have talked to have mentioned that sounds a possibility.

You say you 'found out' it was the tailshaft...how do you come to such a conclusion?

Because the mechanic had a look at the problem, and told me it was the tail shaft. The problem was with the Ball Joint in the tail shaft, it was cheaper to buy another tail shaft (second hand) instead of buying a new ball joint, so thats what I did and its been running fine ever since. :)

Sounds similar to a noise I had in my vx berlina super 6. Clunking noise would come and go. Never happened in reverse though as far as I can remember.

Took about 6 months before it would happen consistently enough to "perform" for the dealer mechanic. Turned out to be the left driveshaft. Cost around $600 to fix, may have been a bit less, can't recall exactly.

A mate of mine had a noise in the back of his VT ss. Hope it's not your diff but i found the rubber isolator block between the tailshaft and diff yoke the holes in it were flogged out and everynow and then it would shift from one side of the hole to the other depending on direction of the tailshaft and cause a banging noise. There is one at each end of the tailshaft from memory maybe worth a look. Goodluck
