View Full Version : Two versus Four Post Hoist?

Advice wanted regarding two versus four post hoists in home setups.

I have just entered a lovely 30 year arrangement with a bank which gives me access to a tidy little house.

What comes with the house is a double garage. The previous owner has had the garage decked out with an insulated roof, air conditioning, two telephone lines and foxtel. Yup ... it was the garage that drew me to raise my hand one too many times at the auction.

The wife has agreed that her Falcon will not enter the garage, and has allowed me to go ahead and get a hoist so that I can raise the beast to clean the underside and generally just tinker.

Can you guys throw some opinions my way regarding:
Two versus four post hoists?
240V versus 3 phase?
Cable versus screw type?

Basically im leaning toward 4 post, 3 phase and screw type ... although this will be incurring a premium charge. I figure that the safety benefits are also greater. Opinions?

Also, with a four post, if you wished to remove the wheels (i.e. have the car supported on the sills), how is it done ?

Any thoughts on whether 4 post is overkill, and 2 post would do the job?

Can anyone recommend a supplier in Sydney for me to have a look at? I only know of Tufflift in Melbourne and Bend-Pak Incorporated (dont know where they are based).

Look forward to your feedback

Seedy

If i had the choice i'd go with a 2 poster, gives alot more room to work on the car IMO.

If you go 4 poster you can get hydraulic jacks that sit in the middle of the hoist and slide from front to rear or you can use air jacks ect.

4 poster as you are leaning towards alot safer and as SLE 355 says you can get hyd jacks for it at a workshop aroundthe corner from the one i used to work in they had a 2 poster as we did he did not check for balancing and was pulling a tight exhaust of atnd it created a rock up and down and next you know we have a crushed body on hand he survived for 3 hrs died in Hosy so go the 4 poster for what you loose in access you gain in safety you want to be around to enjoy it.

Two posters are good. Never had a problem with them as long as the car is put on right.

Seedy what ever happened to the guy that had probs with his tune. I cant remember his user name and since the thread got locked up I cant find it. Did he ever get it fixed by anyone. Sam offered to do it for free (even though it was somebody elses tune) but that was about the time the thread got locked so I dont know if he saw my message.

I would go a Two Poster, much better for actually working on the car, 4 posters are good for fitting exhausts and doing wheel alignments IMO.

Two Posters let you drop all the wheels off, pull front ends and diffs out etc etc

We have both at work and they all get used the same way weather it is a gearbox/eng/diff or a simple wheel change.
I feel safer using a 4 poster as the car/hoist does not move around as much and we use a air jack to lift up the car from the middle if we need to get the wheel of the hoist.

Bah, you said it was a two car garage right? Just get one of each. :p

Seriously though - congrats on the house! Didn't even know you were going to another auction. Pics (of the garage ;))!

Cheers,

Always the way !!

You were about 2 days too late, I just sold a 3 ton hydraulic/wire rope, drive on 4 poster pommy Bradbury hoist for a steal ($1000) didn't think of putting it on here for sale, should of known better, sold it in the trading post, there are some quite cheap hoists in there.

we have 5 2 posters at work and 1 4 poster. the four pster never gets used and is usually a parking spot for dead cars. they are good for doing quick servicing as you dont have to stuff around with hoist arms etc. go the two poster for sure.

also i need to know how much roof height you have and do you have 3 phase and also how much room you have side to side as a hoist will take up 1 and a half car spots so no cars side by side i think you will only need a 2 post hoist and we can do great deals for ls1 members. :)

G'day Justice,
Not wanting to say too much less this post gets shut down aswell, but the long and short of it is that my mechanic (Sonny) compensated me for the tune, as it was him that organised the tuner who destroyed my car. He said that for $1500 he wasnt going to a customer walk out the door unhappy. Im pretty impressed with that.
Sonny then got a tuning package and tuned it so sweetly that even I (Who is a bit exacting - as this thread would indicate), is over the moon with how nice it is.

I really appreciate the offer that you and Sam were able to orchestrate, but yes, a happy result was achieved in the end. As all you guys know, it makes a difference to have it tuned by a MECHANIC :)

:D But lets keep it on topic now :D

Fatas, whats the minimum roof height for a shed to be able to use a 2 post hoist. Im happy if i cannot have the bonnet fully opened when the car is in the air.

Im looking at at a 18m Wide, 7.5m Deep and 3m Wall Height Shed with a 10deg roof pitch, it will have 3.6m wide bays too, could i sneak a 2 poster in with that height or do i need to go for a steeper roof pitch ?

yep you could fit a 2post 3 ton molnar hoist in there.
the over all WIDTH is 3250 mm the over all HEIGHT of the posts is 2770 mm and the hoist will LIFT to 1900 mm to the BOTTOM of the arms + height of car from sill to roof hope this helps. :)

Guys, this info. comes compliments of Fatas, I had to shrink them down a bit to comply with the forums rules (too slow for dial up's the size they were), hopefully it is still all readable. If not let me know and I will try and make them a bit bigger ...

Hi Fatas,
I am new to this forum and came across your post that states that you sell hoists. I tried to call you but got a message from Optus stating that the mobile number was not taking any calls. Do you still sell hoists. If so how do I contact you.
Thanks

Richard mentioned that he was on holidays for a bit in the Marrano's thread, probably why his message bank is full.

I'm sure he will contact you when he returns

Two post clear floor, That way is fairly easy to get lowered vehicles on them, Molnars jobbie is reasonably good, Rotary are even better. (I like the arm locks a lot better).
Molnar are australian made and can be brought to plug straight into a wall socket (single phase), Although single phase ones will cost more than a three phase one.
Unsure about the rotary(only seen three phase).
I "swapped" a four post bradbury about six months ago for a carton of gold, Not that you wanted to hear that.
