I was always under the assumption that HSV were a vehicle manufacturer in their own right (Sure, I know that they don't actually make the base car, but Toyota didn't make the Lexen either, etc, etc).
I noticed on my old rego papers the other day that my Clubby is listed as a "Holden sedan".
So am I right in assuming that HSV are not categorised as an actual vehicle manufacturer?

I would take the rego papers with a grain of salt.
Whan I was about to buy my car, the rego papers listed it as "Cylinders: 6" so I made sure they were fixed before I bought it!!!

I think the manufacturer status is determined by the percentage change from original content.. and based on gen III models, alot of the car is still stock, body, most of the engine.
Now Rinspeed makes rather umm interesting porsche variants and it is a manufacturer to the best of my knowledge.
I guess if HSV did some roof chopping and changed the general shape of the body then they could move to manufacturer status but otherwise they are just an enhancer.

Here in Australia, HSV are a manufacturer. Don't know about you in the states, but that is how it is over here.

I have always assumed HSVs are a seperate manufacturer in their own right - like Shelby was for Mustangs? Rego papers are typically stoopid (can cause problems though). My convertible is registered as a "sedan" .. even though it is a factory 'vert .. oh .. my Javelin coupe is registered as a sedan also.

here in Vic
HSV are seen by Vicroads the RACV and insurers as a modifier
...not manufacturer
It is Holdens that make a vehicle that satisfies the ADRs
(although any HSV mods have to comply too)
and it is Holden that carries the warranty obligation under law...

So, do any other HSV owners have their rego papers handy? Do they say Holden or HSV?

Here in Australia, HSV are classed as a vehicle manufacturer.
They comply and attach an appropiate compliance to designate the new vehicle ID. Insurers need to identify HSV's as their own model.
Check out the REDBOOK to see Australian Car model lists by Manufaturer.
(When I insured my HSV Astra, there was no listsing under Holden, But HSV!)
This is the same in Victoria too!
Hence... no Holden badges as such. Sure the core vehicle is Holden but model wise is a HSV XXXXXX.
Also, Peter Dichera (ala CSV) also shares the same benefit as a producer of motor vehicles. He makes more than 100 with an open ticket to manufacture models to comply with ADR's.
With this, they can order cars from the factory in any config as long as it complete off the line with bumpers, wheels etc....
Hope this clarifies the point.

When we changed our rego over to from QLD to NT the fellow that checks the compliance plate at MVR was the one that typed in "Holden HSV Clubsport"...I don't think that's technically right. But hey they do things differently in the N.T.

Make: Holden Model: HSV Badge: Avalanche Series: VYII
I've always regarded them as a manufacturer ; they change engine, exhaust, suspension, brakes, seats, steering wheel, internal trim, gearbox.....hmm..what else is there?
This topic can reduce to an argument about semantics I spose :bash:
