Is it possible to get service records for a HSV which will show if it is using "excessive" oil .. ie. previous complaints about it, oil-consumption tests, topups between services, etc? Someone at work is looking at buying a VXII R8 which higher miles and I'm wondering how they can cover themselves before purchasing?

Is this someone buying from a dealer or private. If from a dealer you should be able to look at the books and get like vin & plate numbers of the car and go to the dealer and ask about the service history. They might tell you they might not. If private it depends on the person selling it if they want to tell you or not.

I was told by my local dealer and the selling dealer that because of privacy issues I could not get a detailed service history.

The car was advertised with full service history, but I noticed after purchase (doh!) by checking the service books that the just gone service was missed/late (by few 1000's of k's).

If you got the car from a dealer they should have done a safety cheak and if it was due for a service they should have done that as well. I would be taking it back and asking about it . You look at a service history but they can not tell you about the last owner but you should be able to see all services no matter what.

That is totally incorrect! The Privacy Act relates to person information. You were requesting details on a vehicle.

They can recall all service and warranty history on the vehicle, print it out and remove any personally identifiable information relating to the previous owner, thus complying with the Privacy Act.

As long as you can read the Engine & Vin No's on the copy of the RO, that's all you need so you can make sure the copy belongs to the car you are looking at.

But, any dealer that tells porkies before I make a purchase is one to not do business with in my book.

Guy at work picked up his VXII R8 .. neat car. Sounds nice. It's high(er) mileage and has a slight gudgeon knock, but no where near as bad as my VY @ 80,000km. I'd say that the analysis that "they all do it" is probably correct .. but some seem to do it worse than others ..
