View Full Version : Waxing Damaging the Paintwork?

Hi All,

I have been experimenting with a few different waxes and I'm currently using Turtle Wax Platinum Series, but I notice that my buffer cloth becomes stained with red paint with all of them. It seems to mainly happen when I wax the bonnet which makes me think that it must have been resprayed at some stage with the previous owner. So now I'm getting concerned that I may be damaging my pride and joy.

Now I understand that waxing, unlike polishing, does not remove any paint - so why does my cloth come away stained? Should I cease and desist my waxing lifestye?

is the wax a pinky colour?

even if its orange, surface dirt will turn it to a reddy colour.

Isn\'t it the lack of a clear coat on Red cars that causes this?
This has happened on every red car I have owned. Maybe
just use wax, rather than polish.

Thanks for the replies.

1. Alexcs-The wax is a creamish-clour, and it dust that comes off when buffing is the same colour as the paint.

2. Drewbytes- I'm not validated. Thanks anyway.

3. Black346 - I'm definitely waxing, not polishing. Have you noticed this when waxing only?

If others find this is happening then I guess I'm not too worried. I'd just like to find out if this is normal or if I should restrict the amount of waxing I do?

I'm noticing this too. Just using a wax, my terry cloths get black on them (car is Phanton Mica - black).... I was worried too. Hope its normal!

You get the red on your cloth because the red I assume is sting red is a solid colour and therefore doesnt have a clear coat over it unlike the metalics which do.......

You will find if you polish or wax say an impulse blue car you will not get any of the colour on the cloth this is due to the clear over base colour.....

But when you do the same on say your sting red car you will get the colour on the cloth, no clear over base coat just solid colour......

cheers

That would have been with Polish, not wax. I am sure one of the
detailers on here will be able to advise you if this is normal. The
Platinum series does appear to be just wax though, according to
the turtle website.
FFOracing...I have never had black paint on any polishing rags
with my Phantom car. That even includes the use of Swirl remover.

My wagon is red hot, never had any colour come off at all.

I am sure I read on here about 12 months ago that the later models
now have a clear coat on them. Cant recall who posted this info
though.

VYII and newer have a clear coat over the red now I believe. Even with Meguiars yellow wax I get red on my cloth with a VYI redhot.

That doesn't explain why my VY I red hot has never had any colour come off on the rag?? Not that I wax it very often...
