In my opinion, no. They may want a deposit though. You don't pay a grocery store or Holden service department until after you have the goods.

What happens if the work isn't up to standard (like I've had in the past), they already have your money.

Orignil here on the forums has his car in getting a full respray and he has only put down a deposit, not the whole lot.

Unless it's an insurance job, the spray guys generally do ask for around 50%

dont do it dude! I got done like a dinner a couple of years back respraying my HQ. Long story short - took ages to finish my car, shithouse bodywork, guy had nearly all my money = guy closes store, pissed off client (me) cant find said panelbeater to break his scrawny little arms so he cant do the same to anyone else!
JUST PAY A DEPOSIT - you will have upperhand when it comes to getting any problems resolved. NO if or buts - go somewhere else if he doesnt accept terms.
He doesnt need your money to do the job (if he is running a reputable business) he has your car as colateral if it comes to you not paying...

i recently had my car resprayed, and i payed a deposit, that was basically to cover the costs of materials. i wouldn't pay alot though, unless you are comfortable and they are a very reputable shop.

just payed 10% on an 8k paintjob for my ute, its still in there getting done. do have a little issue in the fact that it basically sat in there untouched for 4 weeks when the total job was ment to take 4 weeks. have had to hire utes for work etc etc so the 4 weeks that it wasnt touched would have been nice if i could have had it, has been 2 months in total now with 3 weeks (at this stage) left...

overall tho im happy

No, they already have security on the job, your car.
I had a front end respray a few months back and
they didn't ask for a cent up front, but if I refused
to pay, I am sure I would have been walking home :)
