Out With the Racists and In with the Wildlife as far as accident causes go.
ANIMALS caused more than 17,000 crashes on Australian roads last year, with kangaroos accounting for most of them, an insurance company said today.
Other animals involved in collisions included wombats, foxes, dogs, cats, horses, cows and sheep, SGIO insurance warned in a statement pointing to the winter month of July as a particularly notorious time for kangaroo crashes.
"Traditionally kangaroos are a problem on regional roads during the winter months," SGIO's Western Australia (WA) manager Garry Moore, said.
Advertisement:
"During winter it gets dark earlier and motorists spend more time driving with their headlights on. Unfortunately, lights can startle and confuse animals," he said.
"In regional WA, animal-related collisions make up a greater proportion of all collision claims."
Nationally, kangaroos were involved in 13,003 out of a total of 17,748 animal-related accidents, research showed.
Most of Australia's millions of kangaroos are nocturnal, and motorists were urged to take extra care at night and around dawn and dusk when collisions are frequent.
The Last bugger we hit caused About $8000 Damage on a Merc.

It won't be long before Insurance companies ask rural policy holders to have one of these installed..

Anyone got one already, how well do they work?

Just to answer my own question, I just came across a study which tested the Shu Roo. Don't think I'll be rushing out to buy one anytime soon, as most of what the company claims, is actually false apparently.
Conclusion of study:
The She Roo is not purely ultrasonic.
The Shu Roo does not produce sound that is detectable at 400m.
The Shu Roo does not alter the behaviour of either the eastern grey or red kangaroo.
The Shu Roo makes no difference to the number of kangaroos hit when fitted to vehicles.

Killed plenty of roos in my old work landcruiser. I wont slow down or swerve for them at night as you'll either end up in the bush or as you go around them, the stupid bastards will run into the side of the car. Kinda funny, but i dont want to fill in any accident report forms.

I've always lived in rural/regional areas and it *appears* that the louder the car, the less chance of animal strike. My old 351 Falcon with twin 2.5" system would scare away just about every critter within a mile! The lights might dazzle them, but they tended to run AWAY from moise. Maybe us country folk should get excemption from noise laws???!!! Open headers all the way!!!! :)

I've hit two roos in the past year - one front on, the other bounded into my rear door - only damage was that one of the plastic prongs that the headlight locating bolts go through broke. I glued it back in place; problem solved.
I live rural even though I'm not far from Canberra. I grew up on the Murray. Roos are BAD news, particularly in winter. If you're taking a trip, leave earlier and do it in daylight, or next morning - not at night.
As for around our places, I take the .243 and the .220 out for a spin (rifle calibres). The lights dazzle 'em, and we hit 'em. Tends to create a bit of a roo free zone.

I hit a wombat in my old celica, got stuck under the back wheels and stayed there for a good 200-300 meters until I could get the car stopped (wombat under car back wheels weren't on the ground), ripped the car apart pretty well to, limped to a servo and got thr racing tape out...could hardly move the bloody thing off the road afterwards to...

My dad hit a roo with our Patrol, did stuff all damage to the 4WD, it has a solid front bumper bar though(not bull bar) and a smallish roo. I ran over a Wombat with the Patrol aswell, i skided trying to stop, it was like a speed bump, i drove of it, turned around and the bloody thing had gone  just walked off, i think i may have just givin it a back rub or something.. Solid little bastards, would hate to think what one would do to my SV8....

I wrote off a 75 series Troopy a few years back. I hit a Wombat (didn't see it at all) at about 110km/h in the middle of nowhere, tearing the right front suspension out and put the right front wheel back the drivers seat. The Troopy rolled several times!
I've also hit a roo in SA, NT, Vic, 2 in QLD and 3 in NSW in the last 18 months. All except one of the vehicles had a bullbar fitted. Bullbars are worth their weight in gold!
The difference in damage caused between two Commodores, one with bullbar one without enormous!
No bullbar, approx $6000 damage, bonnet, bumper bar, headlight, driving lights, front guard, condensor, radiator, fans etc.
With bullbar, $1200 damage. Driving lights, bonnet (the roo went up in the air and landed on the bonnet) and bullbar fixing points needed repair.
If you only ever hit one roo, the bullbar more than pays for itself!

Tastes a bit like platypus. But if you cook it right and throw in some gum leaves it kinda tastes more like koala.

Funny you say that. One of the roos I hit last year was at about 11:30pm 20km sth of the Marla Roadhouse in SA on my way to the Supercars in Darwin. I'd driven straight through from Melb except for 2 fuel stops. As I pulled into the roadhouse to fuel up and grab a room, an Aboriginal woman who was sitting near the pumps noticed the fresh blood on the front of my vehicle. As I got out, she asked me what had I hit. When I told her a roo, she lept to her feet and excitedly walked over to the boot and asked could she see it. When I told her it wasn't in the boot, because it was already full. She then asked how far back down the road it was and when I told her about 20km she despondantly walked away and sat back down.
As I walked out of the roadhouse, having paid for my fuel and room, she said to me, "Ay bloke, nex time you pick it up and I cook it for you good ay."
As for the taste of Roo. For those of you who have never tried it. Give it a go. I've eaten it dozens of times and love it. It's the healthiest red meat and certified by the Heart Foundation accordingly. Woolworths stock it in the NT and I've also seen it in Safeway stores in Vic too.
Get a Roo backstrap or steak, roll it in dried mint leaves, place it in the fridge for 24-48 hrs on a dinner plate covered in clingwrap.
(Olive Oil in the frypan) Sear meat in a frypan on a very hight heat, constantly roll/turn the meat for about 2 mins.
Bake it in the oven like a roast or cook it in a Cafe Press & serve with steamed vegies and a good Shiraz. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmagnificent!!
****NEVER cook roo past rare, as it dries out, looses flavour and toughens like boot leather very quickly****
