Hi all,

I just used my G-Tech for the first time, and went for a quick blast down a quiet street. As the street is only short, I just managed to hit 3rd before I had to start pulling it up, and much to my surprise, it was reading 298, which is about 223rwkw.

My car has a nice zorst, and a SS CAI  (don't blame me, as previous owner did it!!) but thats it as far as mods. I am planning a MAFless tune come tax return time.

I am very surprised at that result, why do you guys think??

Cheers :)

Nice Welcome!!!

Welcome to the forum mad_monaro.

There doesn't seem to be to many people using the G-tech on here, it would be interesting to get a dyno run to see how close it is though.......

Enjoy the forum, use the search function to check that any questions you may have aren't already answered in the huge volume of information we have here at your disposal.......

Thanks plonkerchops ;)

I bought a G-Tech, as I wanted an indicative of what I output I had. I had a little run, and asked for some feedback on the result I got.

What I didn't realise I was asking for too much

Hey mad_monaro.

The problem with a g-tech is if it's not set dead level it can be very optimistic in it's 0 - 100, quarter mile, and hp rating. Also if the road is not dead level through the whole run same story. Further, if the car is softish and squats a fair bit same deal, very optimistic readings. However, it is surprisingly consistant when its set properly and the run is on a flat road. The other thing with the HP mode is you have to estimate the weight of the vehicle and input it don't you? So more room for error.

I would let the dyno tell you rwhp but the 0 - 100 reading can be used to see roughly what effect mods have (ie difference from before mod to after mod on same road). The new g-tech pro RR I have been told is very accurate, having 3 g-force sensors instead of one and having adjustments for rear squat etc but it aint cheap.

You must be the only one in Brisbane who doesn't know about it, wait, make that the only one in Australia

Now, on topic, don't take it to heart mad_monaro. What some of the guys are saying is correct though, you'll find when you actually go to the strip or put it on a dyno the readings will be different. It does not matter anyway, as lond as you are happy with how it goes, that's what matters.

Cheers Mongy............I realise the best way of finding out the true performance and is the track, and dyno / tuner. I do plan on the Dyno/Tune in a couple of weeks, which will hopefully unlock some more of that hidden HP. Unfortunately I don't get the opportunity to head over to WSID, but I am fan of the 1/4 action. I used to run my old VN SS stock at Calder with only zorst and custom CAI, and it was a blast - best time I did in that was a 14.36. Not bad for an old 5ltr.

If the GTech was somewhere near the mark (was on a flat road), then I am very happy with the rwkw before the edit.

Hey mad monaro,
I was in the same boat where I just wanted an estimate of how much power or qtr times I could get although once the mods start rolling in so does the dyno & track time to prove the results with either a timeslip or dyno printout.
Ive got Gtech fitted in my monaro also although once your car goes on the dyno or you take it out to the track you realise how off it actually can be and you wont look back at it......

My mate has just bought a gtech off ebay really really cheap. I have hade the ute dyno'd and am going to get it dyno'd somewhere else due to reasons I would not like to go in here. Once have it dyno'd i will be using my mates g-tech and try to give feedback on the results.

Either way im not fussed as both products ( dyno and gtech ) are just lines in the sand. Where you draw the line is up who ever.

Will let you all know of the results.

Cheers

Heres a vote for the G-tech, I have a very quiet 100k zone road near me and I have used the 0-60mph function to try to learn how to launch well without breaking any known laws. Mad_Monaro don't worry too much about what HP you get from the unit, its like any other non-professional measuring device. Even a inaccurate device (and I am not saying the Gtech is) can be extremely useful if the instrument results are at least repeatable (ie. in the case of the Gtech ensuring a repeatable mounting position and using the same stretch of road in the same conditions).

Mad_Monaro, what you will quickly learn on this forum that is easier to get sledged/ignored/off topic replies than to get good feedback on a newbie question.

Hey, my first controversial post :)

GTech probably a bit of a toy really.

But chassis dynos are often crap too. There are plenty of "happy" dynos around, and some dyno operators who are, to put it bluntly, corrupt. But chassis dynos have a huge following, especially amongst those who don't really understand that peak torque and horsepower are not all you need to go quick, and in fact can be obtained using methods that are actually detrimental to going quick. Check out all the attention paid by the mags to "horsepower heroes" at the Nats etc.

Engine dynos, maybe better, but still have their critics. In the US the "engine masters" series has its competitors on engine dynos for evaluation according to certain criteria, but even on an engine dyno an engine can be built just for the dyno (ie, not really streetable in any way).

Track is the best. But you need to learn how to drive the car to get the best out of it. So even track can be misleading.

Anyway, as a couple of the blokes have said, enjoy your car!! Take it to the track, get to know how to drive it. Forget all the mods until you can get the max out of what you currently have.

fatas - I just replied to your PM :)

leelee - I will be very interested when you have some comparisons on the G-tech, let me know how it goes. Will be interesting to see if its really crap, sorta crap, or not to bad

DABOSS - I got the weight of my car from specs I found online, then added my weight, weight for fuel, then coverted it to pounds. Obviously not exact, but it should be pretty close.

What I have learned in my limited time on this forum is:

- there will always be someone with a different opinion than yours. It would be boring any other way.

- a dyno report is really only a bit of paper with a number on it, but to some it is the be-all-and-end-all.

- ditto for a timesheet.

- it's best to be able to cop a flaming on the chin and move on.

- G-Techs are toys (I've actually found mine quite consistent and useful).

- MAFs are for girls.

- there are some members whose opinions you don't question.

- but most of all, don't be afraid to ask stupid questions. I've learned heaps by doing just that

Enjoy the forum, it ain't all that bad :D

Just one thing with your weight calculations mad_monaro, an SS ute with A4 comes up as 1619 but with me in it and 3/4 tank mine is 1740, I weigh 80kg so your estimate will be pretty close.

Try and install it as close as possible to the roll centre of the car, this will reduce the effects of body movement from the results.

Or at the very least, mount it in EXACTLY the same spot each time. That way, if it's wrong each time, at least it will be consistent.
