I was always told 10 minutes of slow driving (low gears - say 2nd at 10-20Km/hr) ... somewhere that has a few left and right turns - back streets are good, little traffic, easy to slow blockies ....

Yeah I was wondering about this as well. With the 3.9's going in soon, was wondering if i would have had to wait a bit before heading out to the track :)

Bloke I know was told 100km without goin over 80kph when he changed to 3.9's. still didnt help though, had to get it re-done, the original installer didnt have a clue.
Anyways, whoever is installing it will tell ya how to run it in if at all :)
Phonsy did my 3.9's and told me 300kms not exceeding 100 kmph.
If you don't run them in properly expect them to whine......

when i went to 3.7's I was told 500km's of low speed variations... sucked though as it took them longer then they said and the day I did get it back had to travel 700k's...def did not sit on low speed for that.. (no problems though has been in the bum for over a year now)

When I got my replacement Hydratack was told no real run in process required, other than not abusing it for the first few 100 kays....might be different with a stock LSD though...

what is the cause of the whine, gears or bearings??

I was told about 300 - 500 km ....so being me I did about 50 km before going on the dyno and getting my first edit
I think the dyno broke mine in :D (3.9.1 by the way and no problems)

I was not told anything.
I had my 3.91 installed at Power Torque and they did not inform me of any restrictions.
drove it like i stole it from exiting the building, so far so good..........

My installer advised at least 500 kms at varying speeds around town (100kph limit) Basically normal daily driving with low to moderate torque inputs and definately no hard launches. The diff in my VY11 SS (travelled 35,000 kms) was rebuild with new bearings etc. when the 3.91 gears went in. Probably explains the high (500kms) run-in compared to others???
After 500 kms he was willing to carry out dyno runs. Apart from the occasional very light grinding noise on tight right-hand turns early in the run-in period, the diff is now noiseless and 7,000 kms later operating like a charm.
Thoroughly recommend the 3.91 gears.

Yeah everyone seems to have their own thoughts about it hey. Harts is say, go straight to the track :) I am getting 3.91's for the auto, but with other mods I am planning they will tie in nicely. Car is booked in for Friday, so I will drive most likely around 100km before I hit the strip at Willowbank on Sat night :)

Yeh will be interesting to see how mine fairs... I was boucing off rev limiter within the first 25km.
i am pretty particular and would have gone with power torques recommendations, but was told nothing..

Reputable Diff Specialist advised me to drive smoothly for 2 Days at 60km/h or less and then 500km at 80km/h or less.
drove it like i stole it from exiting the building
 Maybe that answers the question?

Question? If it is recommended to run in the diff when you change "gears" what did you do when you bought your cars new? (If you bought them new that is) Did you follow these same principles? or did you not give it any thought and just drove the car to "Run" in the engine? If you didn't follow the same principles when new was there any problem with the original "gears"? ie whine etc.
Just a thought.

had 4.10's installed, then had to do the compulsory burnout on their steep workshop ( covered in rubber ) driveway, give it death i was told and enjoy. They also use redline oil. This Auckland firm do a huge amount of race diffs for all categories and stand by their work.
