Noticed this product for the first time whilst filling up this evening and thought I'd post about it.
Anyone else see / try it?
Details can be found here :

PS : I think it's just another name for Shell Premium Unleaded :
What’s the difference between Shell Unleaded 95 and Shell Premium Unleaded Petrol?
These two fuels are the same. Shell Unleaded 95 is called Shell Premium Unleaded petrol at Shell branded service stations where Optimax is not available.
In markets where we currently offer Shell Premium Unleaded we will not be re-branding to Shell Unleaded 95 at this stage.
In markets that do not currently offer Shell Premium Unleaded we will take the opportunity to introduce Shell Unleaded 95 as Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) is removed. Shell Unleaded 95 will be available at Coles Express outlets in Victoria, NSW, South East Queensland and the ACT.

I saw it myself tonight whilst filling up. I'm in Townsville where there is no Optimax just Premium ULP and ULP (and now ULP 95)
So here I'm filling up with Premium which is 6 cents extra per litre then ULP reading about ULP 95 and not knowing if it's the same product or not.
You can guess the service attendant was really helpful with my questions about ULP 95. NOT!

Shell Unleaded 95 (95 Octane) and Shell Premium Unleaded (95 Octane) are the same.
The standard Shell Unleaded is 91 Octane.

What is Shell Unleaded 95?
Shell Unleaded 95 is a new high octane brand of fuel with a minimum octane rating of 95, compared to regular unleaded with an octane rating of 91.
As part of a commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by 2009, many vehicle manufacturers are now producing vehicles that require fuels with a minimum octane rating of 95, a level that will become the base standard for all unleaded fuels.
Shell Unleaded 95 - the improved regular unleaded
Shell Unleaded 95 has a minimum Research Octane Number of 95 and is designed for use in many new vehicles which are designed to run exclusively on high octane fuels. Many new car manufacturers are now producing vehicles that require fuels with a minimum octane rating of 95, a level that will eventually become the base standard for all unleaded fuels. While many new car drivers will choose a premium fuel, like Australia’s favourite 98 octane Shell Optimax, fuels with an octane rating of 95 will also provide a highly suitable alternative.
Shell Unleaded 95 is now part of Shell’s comprehensive suite of motor fuels, which includes regular Shell Unleaded Petrol (having a minimum 91 octane rating) and market favourite Shell Optimax – a 98 minimum octane fuel specially formulated to deliver superior engine power, responsiveness and cleansing benefits.
What are the main benefits of using Shell Unleaded 95?
Many vehicles are equipped with active knock sensors that de-tune the engine when running on 91 octane unleaded petrol. These vehicles will benefit in performance and fuel economy when running on Shell Unleaded 95.
Shell Unleaded 95 also contains additives designed to prevent deposits within the engine.

Technical

When the new anti pollution ADRs come into force (1/1/07 I think) all cars will require 95 ron so ULP will go the way of LRP & Super.
I beleive there will be a new extra grade of petrol in the 100-102 ron bracket. This is not confirmed just something I overheard but I sure do hope so.

I hope not... I'm not wasting my money on 95RON when the car runs just as well on 91RON. I bet there's going to be a nice price hike on the lowest petrol grade (ie. 95) too, just another way for them to make money  Even in 2 years time, how many cars on Australian roads will actually require something better than ULP? I reckon it'd be less than 5%...

When I saw it the other day it was about 8 cents per litre more than standard unleaded and about 8 cents less than Optimax.
The Shell FAQ says that Shell Unleaded 95 can be used by leaded vehicles, so they're proposing, it's less fuel types but catering for as many options as before.
Depends on the extent you're wanting to go to care for your engine. Research is telling us fuel quality is crucial to engine longevity. Better fuel means better fuel economy, cleaner engine, more power, less emissions and so forth.
The fuel companies claim: higher quality fuel removes the deposits caused by filling up with regular fuels, and high quality fuel reduces wear in critical engine components such as fuels pumps and prevents corrosion.

If the premium you're paying more for was 98 octane than it'd be called Optimax and labelled that way. I think they're just stretching the word premium for all its worth and making a profit from it. If you don't have Optimax, go for the ULP 95 if it is cheaper as you can bet it'd be the same fuel as that premium.

Personally I think it's wasted on an older car. I'd rather spend 8c/L less to get a lower fuel quality, it's really not necessary to buy high quality petrol for a typical 15+ year old car.
I used to run a tank of premium every now and then, but since petrol passed the $1/L mark I don't do it any more. Hasn't really made any difference at all, and I'm not expecting it to. Maybe the fuel filter will need to be replaced more often, but I'm not worried about that.

There's a fuel already available with this (and more) rating.
It's called LPG :)

I've never been a fan of shell fuels, heard they put additives to get the octane ratings up.
I tend to get the best performance from BP Ultimate, Mobil 8000 is a close seconds... pity their stations are rare in my parts.

I have been using the Shell V-Power Racing in my SS_V and is great fun. I dont know if it cheaper long term wise but the car a lot better on it and is a lot quicker on the fuel then standard unleaded.
The extra performance is worth the extra $$$.

Of course they do .... as do ALL of the other fuel companies. How did you think the high octane fuels were achieved?
Many of the octane boosters actually come from our Kiwi neighbours. There was a major shortage of higher octane fuels across all the OZ refined majors around Xmas a few years back because the NZ company that produces the boosters had some manufacturing issues that required them to recall a whole batch

When I saw it the other day it was about 8 cents per litre more than standard unleaded and about 8 cents less than Optimax.
So your Optimax is 16cpl? Ouch - talk about price gouging! In Adelaide its 10cpl extra everywhere and U95 is 6cpl more. BPs are typically 10-11cpl more and Syn8000 is similar.
