I need a spring scale (i think that is what it's called)to do the preload on my pinion bearing on my car now where can I get one from? If i got a fishing spring scale how do I work out the measurements to nm from kg or lbs?

Hello
When I mentioned before about a spring balance the unit I used was just a plain fishing scale that I bought from a hardware shop. Do you know the pinion preload torque, is it given in Newton meter, newton centimeters or plain newtons? From memory a newton meter is the rotating torque applied to a pivot/hinge/radial axis of 101.97 grams at a lever length of 1 meter. So if you do the maths/graph measure the diamater of the pinion shaft, use the radius as your shaft length then multiply to get the pull in kgs of the scale. :eek:
Or the other method is get a torque wrench and set it to the force required?

the torque required is only 1.4 - 2.4nm with new bearings.
on the holden service cd it says
"If the pulley diameter is 152mm, the radius is 76mm which equals 0.076m. the spring balance reading is 25n. Therefore, the preload equals 0.076m x 25n = 1.9nm"
at the end in the special tools it shows you how to make the pulley to bolt onto the pinion flange with the above spec's.

2.4nm = 1.770146lbt ft (footpound)
2.4nm is sfa so take care when doing it so you dont over do it.

the spring gauge is showing 25n so there will be 1.9nm at the pinion
