Hi. I am looking buying a second hand Commodore SS 5.7 and I found a VT II SS 5.7 year 2000 model.
I remember that there was a certain year model or batches of SS 5.7 that had major problems. I would like to know what year Holden had this problem just in case :( .
Thank you

We will forget you said that, just this once :D
Seriously, all car purchases are a risk! You can get dog VZs! Plenty of crap xr8s too! Just get as much info on car as you can, give it a good long drive, check log books for problems, ring the people who last serviced it etc, etc.
Dont buy with the heart, use your head and good luck!

True...The first time I bought a Holden, I told myself I was just going for a drive, look around dealership, no rush and will give myself two weeks to find a good V6 Holden. LMAO...The second dealership I visited on that first day, I came home driving the V6!

Dont listen to him!! If you have checked the car out and it isnt a pig and you seem to really like it, then buy it!!!!! What is the problem these models are suppossed to have? ALL gen3s are noisey too a degree and prior to vx2 they had the problem with rear tyre wear (easily fixed).

Most models are good the only real problem 5.7's were from 1999 to 2005 are the rest are sweet  No really a vt is now 5 years old so any problems would have allready come to light and been rectified just do it you wont regret it I have an 03 vyss that has a motor on order from holden as the one in it sounds like a landrover deisel but hay its the sweetest Quikest car Ive ever owned and every drive is a treat.

I think they fixed the problems from the vx ss series 2 onwards, but there were still some cases of bad engines. Ive been told to stay away from anything vt series 2 and vx ss series one. If the engine hasnt had a rebuilt or engine replaced dont go near it, not worth taking the risk. But the au xr8s where much slower and uglier, but are more refined and handle better.
So if I was you Id try and find one thats had a rebuilt or new engine, so that way you shouldnt have any trouble with it in the future.
Good luck!

SupremeVT98,
Sorry for going off topic, although how did you post an "Avatar" in your profile when your not Validated??
Back on Topic..... From my knowledge the early series LS1's had piston slap and excessive oil usage.

Without trying to put you off completely, they NEVER fixed all the well-known LS1 ENGINE problems. Maybe they will with the LS2? That said, the issues with the vehicles themselves basically appear minor. I have had NO vehicle problems with my car (other than broken power aerial)
My SV8 is April '03 VY1 and it's "original" engine was changed over 'cos of excessive gudgeon-pin noise. There are a number of people of this board with similar problems of piston slap, gudgeon-pin noise, excessive oil consumption. Last week I pulled up at the lights next to a new VZ SS and it was happily piston-slapping away ... But then I've listened to some VT1s and they a quiet as a mouse (I thnk you need to be careful about oiling problems on early cars?)
These engines are basically a lottery. Steer clear from obvious noisey, "oily" engines and you'll probably be OK .. as recommended earlier .. get the latest car you can; VXII up.
My 2 cents.

while my own vy ss has had the pistons redone it still isnt as quite as the day i got it but it doesnt miss a beat or use oil just has a slight tick to it but anyway for all the gen 3s oil probs etc i personally know that the xr8 are now angel either from big ends(mates ba) and oil issues themselves. if you that worried get a reputable mechanic to wave his hands over it .

i bought a vt II calais about 4 months ago,its done 130k and i've had no problems at all.
my friend also has a vt II ss no motor problems.
i was like you before i bought mine.
everyone was telling me to stay away from it,but if you get it checked properly by a mechanic, no oil leaks etc. you will be as happy as me.
oh yea then the mods start!!!!!!!
thats another story.

02 VX SS had no problems with the engine no disturbing oil usage and no piston slap sold it and had over 120,000 on the odo.
04 VY2 Calais no problems with this one either.

My VP SS had it when the conrod broke.
I wouldn't call it piston slap more of a piston bashing. :p
I got told by a Ford fan who worked at a mechanic's shop "not to go anywhere near an LS1".
But I decided I liked good fuel economy, and a fast reliable car, so I chose to ignore his advice. :D

Never buy a used car with a LS1 in it without cheaking the piston slap problem first.
Tell the owner you will only come over if the engine is dead cold, If he has started it you're wasting your time. Mine rattled its head off with only 10,000 k on the clock, once rebuilt its ok.

I'm a Ford fan and I just couldn't lay my hard earns on an AU. The looks just didn't appeal to me at all. I ended up getting a VTII. I believe the VX had more problems with oil consumption than the VT. When I sold mine it was starting to drink oil... 10,000 service the dipstick was reading half. Developed the dreaded piston slap early on but never was loud enough for a service centre to warrant a rebuild. Just got used to it, would go away after a few mins of a cold start.
I also had to replace the diff and the engine side half of the drive train. All in all after 4 years considering I was driving it for work daily in lots of heavy traffic for about 120K it fared pretty well. The few cars before it cost a lot more to keep on the road and they were 6's.
Best you can do is judge what your dollars can buy and take what you can find for a spin. I wouldn't be too concerned about oil consumption in the LS1's, I personally think a lot of hot air was blown over it. Some obviously were worthy of complaint but as long as you keep your eye on your fluids, you should catch a drop in oil in the sump well before it becomes a problem.
I think you'll find between the VT and the AU, the VT is more exciting to drive...

hehe..thanks for bringing that up.
Unfortunately, I've got no idea but when I checked the "user cp" just now, it seems that all the controls have changed.
I'm guessing, before it allows u but now it doesn't.
