View Full Version : Alternator died tonight
My alternator died tonight, didnt think i was going to make it home from work as the battery gave up the ghost suprisingly quickly. Called NRMA and luckily they do 24Hr Alternator replacement, so now ive gotta wait for the NRMA guy to come and replace my alternator.
Does $350 sound reasonable for a NRMA Supplied & Fitted Alternator for a VS GTS??

obviously it is reasonable because you are going to pay it :D
after hours service, them come to you, makes it perfectly reasonable.... even if they charged 450 you'd probably still pay it just due to the inconvenience factor.....

Agreed.
For them to come to you & fit it NOW, certainly saves you the whole arsing around element at least & how much is that worth?

Couldnt agree more mate, At the rate the battery lasted on the way home tonight, i dont know if i could get to work without the battery dying first.
I figured $350 was pretty reasonable for a 4 hour turn around with installation @ 9pm!!
BTW Dave, what happened with those GTS Rims off Ebay you were gonna get??

Did the alternator 'die' or did the brush's finally run out of copper? because its a 30$ job vs a 350$ job..
But anyway 350 sounds fair :)

BTW Ended up being $319 as they quoted me on a V6 not a V8 Alternator

Yep, mines done the same, turned out to be no contacts left on the alternator so she wouldnt charge... Got me all of 1km b4 car died.
If you still have it, pull the black box part off the back, you will see the contacts.
Doesnt matter now, but if thats what it is, cheap to fix and sell it off or carry it in the boot :P

If its a Bosch alt, the 'black box' is the voltage regulator and brush box, i bought one last week for about $23. This can be replaced by itself easily, but if its done a few kms, you should also replace the bearings (less than $20), and skim the slip ring (where the brushes contact the rotor) on a lathe. If you allow 30 mins removal/refit, an hour for overhaul, a bit of margin on the parts, $175 would easily cover it. If you want it done outside working hours, double your price and 'viola'......$350 please sir.
