Hello All,
I was recently at performance shop and was told that Spitfire leads, spark plugs and air filter will give approximately a 20kW gain on a Gen 3 motor and approx. 12kW gain on a WRX. Has anyone out there actually put these leads and plugs on their car and gained this or noticed an increased in power. Each lead is apparently like having two leads (non-insulated of course) wrapped together and the result is lower resistance, hence better conductivity and more efficient flow of current. Anyway I'm interested in hearing about other peoples' experiences. I'm also just about to get a tune done, and was wondering if it was best to put the leads and plugs in prior to the tune or anytime after the tune? Thanks guys

I'm no GenIII mod expert but sounds a bit like a porky.

Some of these claims are just an Insult to ones Intelligence, you should see the BS, on a certain cold air inductions phamplet,

Yeh Porky of the year.
What ever plugs and leads you end up getting have them on before the tune.
I have the Iridium Plugs and Magnecor Leads which are better than standard
but are on the expensive side.( only noticed a slight difference over the
original )

New plugs, leads & filter of any sort will potentially give you a kw gain, but the claims by splitfire seem to be largely unfounded. I also bought the kit, basically because the plugs & leads needed replcaing anyway so I thought I'd give it a crack. In no way did it feel like or produce a 20rwkw improvement of any sort. 215kw without splitfire, 215.7kw with splitfire stuff fitted.
The blue leads to fancy though. :D
Personally, I having made the mistake wouldn't be wasting your $$$ unless the leads/plugs etc you have are due for replacing anyway.
It leaves me wondering though...........does one of the S's in SS inductions stand for Splitfire????????????????????????????

i was thinking of getting the same package after a write up in an oldish street commodores mag claiming 20rwkw gain ......................
after reading these posts ...............guess not :p

Yeah I read that article aswell. It was interesting they didn't run a comparison of the splitfire against a new set of original leads, etc. I just guessed it was a load of rubbish from that conclusion, as if they were scared to do it. LOL :D

If you enter SPLITFIRE into Google,
you'll see there's a few court cases mentioned with action against the company over supposed false claims.
On the other hand Chevy-Hi-Performance magazine did a before and after with a set of Granatelli plug leads and picked up a slack handful of hp on a Chevy pick-up (5.3L V8 Gen 3) which was part of a validated dyno test. It may be online through their website....

Load of crap if you ask me.
I dynoed some Iridium Plugs against the platinum ones and with the right gap made NO power at all.Actually if gaped wrong I got - 3rkw!
I use the standard plugs now and change every 10,000km and are always fresh.
The original Holden leads are still the best to use.

And if you go to that site and look at the postings for the same thing you will see what I wrote under drewdevo, basically the test was done under from what I call questionable circumstances,
1. All the parts that were replaced were old and dirty(well used).
2. Parts prior to the dyno run should have been replaced with standard new items and then dynoed to get a true reading.
3. Then they should swap the parts over and re-dyno and see the difference  .
4. They were claiming 20rwkw over standard parts not likely (Yes you will get 20rwkw over standard parts if the plugs have done ?km's,leads?km's and of course a very dirty BLOCKED air filter that has probably done 20K+)
5. LOAD OF CRAP :bash:

i've put that splitfire set in, and found no difference, so unless you need to change your leads plugs for service, i wouldn't waste your time

Not correct,
The Granatelli Motorsport LS1/6 Plug leads (about $195 a set) offer less than 1 ohm resistance (0.5 ohms on test) as opposed to more than 950 ohms for the o.e wires.
According to CHP they were worth 15hp and 17 lbs-ft of torque (nothing else changed) on a 5.3 Gen 3 V8.
See Chevy Hi-Performance magazine Sept 2005 issue.

i rekon if you combined them with the carbon fibre drinkign set you might be up for 20kw :)

Done a bit of research on this, and it looks like some plug lead resistance is a good thing as it makes for a longer duration spark and better ignition of the fuel-air mix. Plus it helps suppress RF emissions.
Around 100 - 1500ohms in a lead is a good benchmark according to one tuning guru.
See this useful article: http://www.musclemustangfastfords.com/tech/0207mmff_tech/
Also:

They are flogging Magnecore, but they have a very solid rep for reliability and as-good-as-it-gets plug leads.

I brought the split fire kit and changed the air filter fist it seamed a little better but when I had the spark plugs & leads fitted it seamed to have lost some punch. Not very happy but I will see what happens when I get an edit soon . I will post results.

mechatron-
streetcommodores magazine done a story on this package ur talking about, they fitted each part 1 at a time then dyno'd
eg- leads then dyno'd
- plugs then dyno'd
-air filter then dyno'd
and a total of around 8-11kw was gained by fitting the package (i cant remember the exact figure)
i dont know the issue number of the mag but i have it, if nesacery ill find it and give u the issue number
i was surprised with the result though!

Yes they did it was 18kw by memory but that was just changing dirty or used parts they should have replaced all parts with new oem equipment then did a dyno run to see what they got and then started swapping parts and doing the dyno runs that way you would get a correct reading. :)
