Some people seemed to become more obsessed with the Rep function than they ever were with post counts .....
It was also being abused with people giving bad rep to people just because they didn't like them rather than based on the usefulness of their forum posting, or giving retaliatory bad reps just because someone else gave them one - it was therefore useless considering its original purpose, so it's GONE. And good riddance. :)

Nah I think the new titles correspond to our old ones.
Eg:
Has Posted in the Tech Sections = 2nd level poster.
Occasional Visitor to the Tech Sections = 4th level poster.
etc...
Could be wrong though.

It's like saving up for something for years and someone takes all your money.
I found out too only post useful info got rep points. the stepping on toes posts etc can get you neg rep.
Even lost my super tech poster thingo, for another one that doesn't sound as good.
oh well don't have to worry about upsetting anyone now
one thing good about it it kept most ppl a bit tamer for fear of getting bad points.

During pay time (work)" and noticed - have never posted in the tech section what the? my first impressions they don't know what there talking about, NOT - they contribute heaps. this must be revised.

So in effect, you were judging people either based on their post count, or by the fact they had a few mates who wer giving them positive rep points .... :yup:
The easiest way to judge whether to use the information provided by someone is to read a few of their other posts ... if those posts were followed by good feedback (i.e. "Great info, thanks!" ), then you should take a good think about the info they provide.

Guys, please, CHILL! :diddy:
The facts are that there have been HEAPS of warnings in multiple threads for those who were "repping" each other like this:
"Here's some rep for ya from -----, share the love...."
Then there were warnings about those who chose to use the repp function for squaring off against people they didn't "like" on the forum......
Not to mention hundreds of PM's to Moderators asking them to reverse rep left and get involved in these personal "stouches"...... :nutkick:
There was plenty of warning that if people chose to misuse the system it would be removed........those warnings were not observed and as a result misuse by the minority has cost the majority the system. Such is life. :teach:
The current classification system has been put in place but like anything on the forum it may evolve progressively or be removed ALTOGETHER should the Forum Owner choose. At the end of the day the Forum is privately owned and the owner can and will do as he chooses.
We understand some people who have been doing the right thing being a little upset......however the way you conduct yourself on the forum, the nature of your posts, the information your provide and the way you interact with other users is ALWAYS going to be the best indicator of your "reputation" here....... :yup:
Regardless of what rating system (if any) prevails on the forum......those criteria endure for all to see!
Hope this puts things into perspective......

Post counts are often an issue on forums. The "spam" type areas of forums are generally not counted in the post counts and the more technical areas only used for the counts. Its often a hard thing to get just right as some ppl do use the post count to measure their own e-penises and new members looking to those same ppl for advice regardless of if its correct or not. If removed completely everyone looks like a newbie. I find that on many forums there is a "class" structure of some sort. On LS1 i look at the joined date more than the title or post count. If they have been here since 2001 then generally they know the rules, the way around and a often a good idea of what works and what doesnt. Im more inclined to read their posts and take the content on board than someone who joined last week and is in love with their MAF. (sorry UT, couldnt resist)

its interesting the regular post count thing was an issue here. ive never seen it on other forums.
once upon a time when we had 'viewed' post counts ANY post on the forum went to your postcount and that boosted your 'level' on the forum in the way of a new 'Has posted in tech section type thing' and people used to do the old 'great post' 'haha' to get a post count up to be 'cooler' so the ability to see your post count was removed and then you had to make a post in the tech sections to even get a post towards your post count, and seeing as the tech sections are a bit more moderated then all else it made sense to prune the post count chasers from the people who gave a rats about good info. And thats how its been since. Same deal tho, people liked there post counts but soon got over it and moved on. This is just another hurdle and people will move on.

Amen to that!
I'm not sure why people see post counts/user titles/whatever as such a big deal really. Personally I think forums are better without them - and I agree with Stu (nice writeup in SC a couple of months back btw) that join date is a far better indicator. In fact, I'd rather see that displayed as a user title over anything else (to replace the "has never posted" etc)...
And I'm not just saying that because I'm one of the "has never posted in the tech sections" folks.... although it is a little inaccurate, it's just that I'm more of a lurker than a poster but I do help where necessary.
I'm saying it from the perspective of someone who is a forum addict... with 11,000+ posts on a well known broadband forum (different username) and who is a member and regular participator of countless other forums, mostly car related but really all different types. And this issue has come up on quite a number of them - it's always the same result.
At the end of the day the people who add value to the forum will be judged on the merit of each and every post they make, not on what it says above their username - even the biggest newbies have been known to come up with succinctly written pearls of wisdom from time to time.
So I say again... who gives a rats. It's not particularly important (and FWIW I'm glad to see the rep system gone). Well done folks.

If you all just turn into YES men and dont dare to disagree with the #@*$ youll be just fine....
Sounds like where I work  . I reckon I'm on negative rep points there for speaking my mind. I don't mind being called a whinger or a troublemaker. At least I'm being myself...
I've been a member of sportsfish.com.au for a few years now and unfortunately the same thing happens there with people posting for the sake of posting and getting their post count up. Might have even been guilty of it myself too.
As with this forum, you just need to work out the members who are the fountains of knowledge as opposed to just fountains. Quality of posts, not quantity is pretty obvious if you do a bit of listening/reading rather than speaking/posting.
I'm all for the "member since..." rather than number of posts too. I think any rating should be limited to "unvalidated/validated/moderator".
Just my thoughts...
PS. Can I get a green dot and be validated for that ;)

Agreed. Absolutely no need for this practice to continue now.
I can see myself getting into trouble again without the rep points to keep me in check....:stick:
