View Full Version : How to get insurance with Shannons?

I rang Shannons today to get a quote. The person I spoke to said they don't insure daily driven cars, only classic cars and hotrods. I told him my car was modified and so he suggested I try Just Car Insurance
I've already Pm'd Dane a few weeks ago with no reply. Who else might be able to help me? From doing a search it seems other people have had the same response on the phone. The customer service people must get a commission for the number of customers they turn away!

Got same story here too m8. Ended up going with Just Cars - they seem pretty good. Can do all "roadworthy" mods to your car - at a fair price.
My VYII SS ute - approx $1200 a year - only downfall is they dont do monthly debit...

hmmm, i changed to shannons a few days ago, from NRMA, better premium and all :)
I had no problems and was going to get a quote on a new SV8 but had to send history etc down, so will wait for that time if it comes.. I got in no problems and my car is by no means a hotrod or classic..
Bloke I got was more then helpful!
Might pay to try again :)

i have tried with shannons a few times and got the same story as in the first post.
i am now with nrma until im 25 and find someone cheaper
I dont know why Shannons are saying that. A large number of people on this forum are insured with Shannons with daily drivers (my old man & me included). Maybe try again and see if you get a different operator.
Only thing i can think of is that i know they prefer not to touch anyone under 25.

is it just me or is insurance expensive in the eastern states? here in WA, im 25 and am fully insured with an allowable 1 claim per year without effecting my no claim bonus for approx $740 for the year with RAC. :D

Yes insurance is VERRRYYY expensive here!!! when i was 23 it cost me $2100 with Full NCB to insure my HSV Enhanced VR SS with Just Cars. Shannons charges me just over half that for the GTS

They didn't ask my age, or my insurance rating, or my driving record. They just asked what model was the car, was it driven daily, was it parked in a secure garage, was I a member of a car club.
I'll ring again and see if I have any more luck. Would they consider this forum a car club?
They pay out all that money for TV and Radio ads and when a potential customer rings they get directed to the opposition.

But Ryzz, your 24 and they will insure you, carneb is 33 and they said no
But Ryzz, your 24 and they will insure you, carneb is 33 and they said no :confused:When i rang the originally they said NO, call when your 25. When i spoke to Dane about the GTS he took all my details and managed to get me a policy. I dont know why they let some under 25's in and not others.
As for Carneb, id suggest ringing them back because its a known fact they do cover daily drivers. If they say they dont insure daily drivers ask to speak to their mgr and find out the reason why, when so many others are insured. My GTS, & mums BMW are daily drivers with Shannons, and dads EJ is also insured with Shannons but not as a daily driver.
Hope this helps

its a shame dane was in holidays when my insurance came up as i know i got a pretty expensive premium through shannons considering im over 25 . .
but it took a lot of convincing to get some1 in shannons to even talk to me . . I dont know how Dane gets around things but i had to convince them i was an "enthusiast" and that my car was a little bit different. The agreed value was the main thing i was after so an extra $500 a year just in case is well worth it.

Same as above.
I'm in Melbourne though. No trouble at all. Done over the phone and filled in some paper work when it arrived. Daily driver, cam, tune, modified transmission, stall exhaust, etc etc etc and no dramas at all but yeah, must be 25 years old and above to get insured with Shannons.

im only 20, and i am insured with shannons and mine is a stocker VZ SV8 that is daily driven.
my premium is $2962 a year, but thats not bad considering i am only 20, on my Ps and i am driving a V8!!
try another operator, some are wierd but some know how to get you in.

Dane no longer works at Shannons :(
Shannons kind of screen there customers to determine if you are a true "enthusiast". It helps a lot if you are a member of a car club. It helps a lot of you are over 25, or even better over 30, and keep your car in a secure lock up garage. Also helps if you have a good driving and insurance record. If you fit the bill then you will get great service and a good premium! At least that has always been my experience, and I have had several cars insured with them - including current with all mods declared, no problem.

GIO, unlimited mods? Sorry mate, if you do any major mods such as engine mods, blower, turbo etc etc, you'll find they won't cover you... Shannons and Just Cars are about the only places that will cover all performance mods.

I think that is quite right. In my own experience garage vs. carport seemed to make a difference when I called them a year after they said no on insuring the VT2 R8. That could be something unique to Sydney though - damned car thieves around here.

Well I have my policy with them with engine mods that went on and no problems with anything I do to the car. As long as I have show everything I do. Shannons and just cars must want to pick what cars they want because they where both in the $4000 mark and I am not paying that when I get the same deal with GIO and pay less. We had a VR that was a full on show car not driven around on the streets that was worth around $50,000 mark and they wouldn't touch it and they are marking out thats what they do. It went under GIO as well and had engine mods. All I am saying is some companys do a lot more then what we think.

It would seem that quotes from shannons vary considerable depending on who you speak to and when you call. I recently tried to insure the SS with mods and the quote was approx $800 more than NRMA and I'm in my 40's. Go figure?

If Dane doesn't work there any more I suppose I'll have to ring their general number and take pot luck that I get someone who gives a toss.
Just out of interest I got an online quote from Just Car. It was about 30% dearer than what I'm paying with NRMA which is not bad BUT they want $600 basic excess plus another $400 excess for mods plus $400 excess for alloy wheels plus $400 excess with no explanation. A total of $1800 if the wheels are damaged

That happened to me with Shannons once (it was a weird case). Over 3 months without a car (and a lot of calls from the insurance ombudsman to them later) and Sun Royal Alliance (Shannon’s underwriters) eventually paid up. SRA were REAL PITA to deal with.

Today I rang Shannons back to see if I would have any more luck. The person I spoke to sounded the same as last time but I can't remember the name so can't be sure. He decided to ask me slightly different questions this time. What car, age of yougest driver, daily driven? At which point he put the brakes on and said they couldn't offer me insurance! I said that I was a member of an internet forum who had lots of members with cars the same as mine that were daily driven and they were with Shannons. He said they all must have a history of owning high performance cars. I said no. He said they all must have other policies with Shannons as well. I said no. I then mentioned Dane and that he used to arrange policies. The bloke put me on hold and when he came back said he had spoken to his manager and they wouldn't insure me because the car's daily driven and they only insure classics and hotrods. I then asked why was it that I could get an online quote for an executive!!!! He said that is just an offer and may not be accepted!!! At which point I said well looks like you can't help me and hung up.
Sorry for the long post BUT I AM SO PISSED OFF! :bash:
Now that Dane doen't work there any more, does anyone else have a contact at Shannons? It seems they don't want to insure our "standard" Ls1's anymore. Not in Sydney at least.

nope not just sydney. the garage thing is why i cant get insured here in brisvegas. JCI have just bumped my excess' up to $2600 because i have more than 5 mods or some crap. Premium is good, excess' are ridiculous.

When NRMA put up my premium I decided to look around (it was only an extra $300, but I've heard scary things about NRMA and their relationship with panel beaters) and called up Just Cars, Shannons and Suncorp. Just Cars was a joke with their premium it was twice as much as NRMA's! Then tried Suncorp and they flat out refused to insure me cause of the mods on the Clubby. Then Shannons.... I called them and you guys thought it was rude to be refused. Car is a HSV, I am part of the HSV owners club, no prior accidents or lose of license, car is modified and the car is locked up in the garage every night. Pretty much is inline with their policies of what they like to insure. As soon as they heard my age that was it done didnt want to know me. So pretty much I'm on freeze for any future mods, I was hoping to go a cam but NRMA dont allow internal engine mods (bolt ons with the exception of blowers and turbos seem to be fine though).
It is frustrating but for the meantime NRMA is fine with me as they are the cheapest by a long shot for me. I just dont want to find out how good they are when it comes to paying out claims.

They don't seem to be improving...
I called them last year to insure the ute, got same story as first post. Ended up going with Just Car (and having made a claim recently they have been quite decent to deal with).
A couple of months ago myself and the car club I'm involved with (Commodore Club of Tasmania) participated in a major show which was sponsored by Shannon's and they gave all competitors a showbag with "Do not touch" signs and stickers and a quote form, etc.
I thought "what the hey, insurance is almost up for renewal" and mailed the quote form off. It's been almost 6 weeks now and I haven't heard anything from them, no acknowledgement whatsoever.
Something tells me they don't want my business. Oh and for the record I am 29 years old, have never lost my licence, 60% NCB, have a good driving record (a few speeding fines but hey who doesn't) and am involved with a number of local car clubs. I am guessing the people who've managed to get daily driven cars insured are just damn lucky because they certainly don't seem to want to deal with me.
If anyone has any tips on how to get insured with Shannon's I'd be interested to know too... I'm not calling them back 10 times till I get the right operator, there has to be an easier way!

This is baffling. I made one phone call and within
ten minutes my SS was insured with all mods for
agreed value on a special policy for cars that do
less than 5k per year. The car is parked under
a carport (not lockup) and I drive it to work where
it is parked in a secure environment twice a week.
My premium is $450 per year and excess $400, and
if I know that I am going to exceed my limit on
K's for the year I just ring them and it goes up
to $600 per year until the next renewal. I have
declared 4 mods since taking out the policy about
5 months ago and the premium has not changed.
The last bloke I spoke to is on this forum, drives
a monaro and was most helpful. Maybe if he is
reading this he could help out, I wont give out his
user name unless he says it is ok.

I have been with NRMA for most of the 15 years or so that I have been driving, and I have only ever driven V8 commodores/HSV. Been in a few prangs over the years, and never had a drama. (Though most were stock, aside from exhaust systems and chips on earlier models)
Now that I have begun to mod my current car, I was a bit concerned that I may need to look elsewhere for insurance, so I made some calls to most of the companies out there.
32 years old, great driving record (1 speed years ago is it, no at fault prangs ever) and a garage for the car. Most companies either gave me such a ridiculous premium quote for a low agreed value that it was a waste of a phonecall, or just said no. (Shannons and I think GIO)
I haven't yet found a better price than what NRMA has got for me, and I have even been through their exact guidelines re. mods by a helpful lady over the phone. I haven't gone that far yet, but a cam may cause problems I think, but aside from that most things seem ok, as long as they are 'street legal' and don't break any rules according to the RTA is what she told me.
So even though most people knock them, I'd still suggest giving them a go. :)

Beware the NRMA (IAG). I neally had my insurance declined this year because I declared my only mod, a set of CSV Headers. I had to argue with them for over an hour and qutoed there PDS Statement, before they agreed to renew. There risk assessors argument was the 297Kw is enought for anyone......One word TOSSER. I had even made appropriate enquires with them prior to puting on the headers to make sure it was OK. I made sure I paid their $70 extra to select my own repairer, they also jacked up my excess to a $1000. I am 47 have been driving for over 30years and have a very good driving record. I trust them and their assessors as far as I can spit. Have even heard of beaters being told to use second hand parts to repair reasonably new vehicles.
My bitch over and done with. But as I said be warned......

I am currently paying $2,195 for Full comp with NRMA.
21 years old and all mods insured. 3.91, induction, ripshift, exhaust etc.
Defantely want to get a better premium, but by the sounds of it unless you are 25+.
Evening,
I have been with CGU formally Commercial Union, for the last 20 years.
Yes, I am a mature person, but even with claims going back to the start of that time have never had any hassels with them.
I have declared all of my mods, even though they are only bolt on at this stage, and no problems.
I go through a Broker and I am not sure if that makes any difference.
Sure, I am 50 and my record is good, but I would still give them a go.
My premium is $700 PA with a $400 excess.
Cheers,

I changed from Young and Cool to Shannons a few months ago as they would no longer cover my car once the engine swap took place.
I tried ringing Shannons early in the year and they said no, but this time they said yes.
I've got some farily unusual mods, but suprisingly im covered, at a cheaper rate then almost every other company ive tried
I'm 21, driving a supercharged V6, airbags, VX GTS rims, caprice conversion, sunroof, $25k stereo...etc, living in a "high crime area" and they still cover me.
All i can say to you guys that try ringing them is to keep on ringing them, and try speaking to a different person. Also, if they ask you about your mods, tell them as much as you can (show them you know your stuff) and if they are interested they might cover you.
My convo with the guy on the phone was heading towards him saying no to me, untill he asked what mods, i told him, he then listened up, and spent the next 30 mins talking to me about them.
Maybe i was one of the lucky ones, but i rekon it pays to keep on trying!

I am a victim of Shannons the same as the first post. I have tried them several times.
Before I left Sydney and moved back to BrisVegas, We had a local manager from Shannons come to a HSV owners club meeting. Syaing how good they are and want to insure vehicles of "Enthusiasts" like us. Anyway next day I called and even used his name (Nicely).
Still a no go. Looks like if you love your car enough to drive it every day then you can't be an enthusiast. :(
This being said I have been with NRMA for many years with different cars and currently on a VX 2001 Senator with all the extras, Sat Nav etc, keeping the insued value a bit higher. The premium is $1540 Per year and this is with Monthly DD to credit card.
When it was new the premium was $2100 per year.

Forget shannons - i have found them to be so inconsistant it's just not worth the hassle . I have had the situation where they are totally clueless about what they will and won't insure - yet i know personally people insuring stock std garbage like camrys and magnas thru them on a multiple policy deals. Real enthusiast machines those ones !!! Also everyone i know who has ever claimed through shannons has not exactly been wowed by the experience.
.Try Vigil insurance , MUCH much better for me for modified or classics, not i'm not sure about Commodores though haven't used them for that.

In WA RAC seem to do some great deals (for the 1st year anyway), I'am 40+ max bonus and they wanted $580 /yr for a SSZ ute, lowered, extractors and "sports exhaust". In WA SGIO wanted $910 for the same vehicle.
I have two other cars with Shannons and they too did a great deal for the mods that have been done to them.

Much better then CGU at $2954 and RACV at $2454.
And 12 free mods whipppeeee......!
LOL, just insured my 89 pulsar with Shannons with no mods and daily driven(was with NRMA). Spose it helps when the XA is already with them though.

Hi,
Do you know if Vigil insure HSV's? I had a quick look on the website quoting system and it did not have HSV available as a selection.
Thanks
Jason
