I was wondering about the 4L80E package for $7500 (that was the price one year ago, I don't know about the price now). I am planning to get the GenT Turbo supplied and fitted to my car in a couple of months and I need a strong auto. I have tried searching for information on the 4L80E and I can't find much at all.
I was just wondering what comes with the 4L80E, like what kind of converter (if it comes with one)?, etc... And is it the same price?..

your talking about buying a built auto, buying an auto and building it or just building one you have?

a 4l65e is only $2,000 plus building it stronger

450kw_Adventra might be able to answer a few of your questions. He has one, after breaking 3 (AFAIK) "built" 4L60's.

Probably a bit differnet as his is a Crosstrac (AWD), but I'm sure he can answer some of your questions.

Cheers,

:D Thanks.

I am planning to get the GenT installed in a couple of months and then taking the car to the track after I do the suspension work and beef up the diff, but before the Turbo is installed I wish for a suitable/strong auto that can handle the torque and power of the GenT and the abuse at the tracks to get the best 1/4 time that I can.. My car will see the track quite often but mostly street use as it is my daily driving car ;) .

The information I really after is this -
What is in the Complete Package for $7500, Like what kind of converter, is there a shift kit in it?, etc. Is it worth the money and is going to last the abuse, power and toque from the GenT at the track and daily driving, have you had any problem's with it so far?

As I was going to spend around $5000 to beef up my auto with a shift kit and high stall converter, but I don't want to take the chances of having to rebuild it every 3 months after its been abused at the track.

Any help would be great.
Cheers Dane.

It really depends what you wish to achieve.

The problem is, you start off with say type "A” set up (like I did) and the man said, "for another $5000, we'll give you this" so I did, up another 80 kW. etc

Get it on the road, it goes awesome, so you beef the auto, they say, "want a good launch" yah (of course you do, especially after giving it so much grunt) then some sticky tyres as you can see some really good times in reach and BANG, something breaks, you fix it and it breaks and so on and so on.........

With the way I've watched your progress with planed enhancements in this thread, and if it's not too hard to lay your hands on a buck or 2, this is what I would do. A cash flow helps. (After wasting $5000 and allot of time on what doesn’t handle being a hoon)

Carry on with your plans, leave the auto standard for now, try and be nice to it, see Craig of Craig's Automatics (HE'S THE MAN!) purchase a 4L80e, get Craig to modify it, put it in and set some records.

If you put a decent stally in an "even modified" 4L60e, you will break it sooner or later, even with only RWD, as many will tell you. Once you break it once, next time is easier as there will be many fractures that won't show up until you put it under extreme force again.

When you're to the auto stage, I'll let you know which stally to use, I'm just getting a special made now (3rd one now) that will give me the "launch from hell" and now with a big auto, things will be good.

You cannot compare the gear change from before to now, if the Adventra was only 2WD I'm sure it would skid into top gear, it's just soooo firm.

Craig of Craig's Automatics has just taken the 62 / 38 split off the rear of my old auto, had a whole new arse end machined up including new gears to fit it to a 4L80e, around 7 inches longer than a 4L60e, and made the whole thing bolt up on the original cross member, in the original holes, with the original drive shafts, a truly professional job that’s 2nd to none.

As an Advanced Trade Automotive Engineer my self (started my apprentiship at a Holden dealership when HQ Holden was released, just a few years ago) now owning 3 industrial companies that carry out different stages of trouble shooting and proactive predictive maintenance through Filterggam wear metal analysis for some of the largest companies in the world, I feel rather qualified to say that the quality of workmanship and dedication I've been fortunate to experience at Craig's Auto is 2nd to none.

It’s great to see people so dedicated to their jobs, I would highly recommend Craig’s Automatics to anyone who wishes a great job to be done.

:D Thanks Adventra, that is great advice and what I needed, I will be sure to get back to you about the stally to see how your launches are going, etc ;) . Money is not a problem for me :D as I make $3400 every two weeks sometimes $3900...

So my plans are... 1)GenT Turbo Kit with a 3.5" Mandrel bent Stainless Steel exhaust including a LS1 Edit... 2) 4L80E Auto and get Craig to Modify it, Stally (will get back to you about the stally to see how it handles), 3) Tightened LSD maybe 3.4:1 Gears, and so on...

:D Once again thank you very much.
Cheers Dane.

Found the following, which might be useful if you have access to tuning software i.e. EFILive etc . Allows the 4L80E to be driven off the Commodore PCM
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4L80E.htm#4L60E%20to%204L80E

#10X. Wiring harness to convert from a 4L60E transmission to a 4L80E transmission (1998 up LS1 type computer only). Cost $225.00

The computer must be re-programmed.
