Just Wondering if the Holden PCM's Are Capable of Extracting Driver Information Such As Travelled Speeds, Rev's, Travel Time Etc.

I have heared through the grape vine that Holden are capable of recovering your driving style through your PCM, to determine wheather you have been neglecting your vehicle. :bash:

Can Anyone shed any light on this topic?

I know that Subaru can upload this sort of info, but I didn't think that Holden could

If you have an engine fault of some type it will record the rpm/speed/gear etc at the time and they will see this.

at the least I reckon it'll notify the Grammar Police for excessive use of capital letters :p

I was initially concerned about this issue (not via the pcm though) when I bought my VY SS II M6 Ute last May.

Considering my thirst for a quick car that goes and sounds right according to my own needs outweighs any concerns I have about potential warranty problems I decided to go for rhe extra HP. Almost half way through the warranty period and no dramas so far.

With regards to Holden I took it in for the free first service at 1500kms it had diff gears, cat back, OTR and mafless tune.

Speaking with the clueless lad behind the counter come time to pick it up he said to me "Do you know your maf is disconnected?"

To which I replied "If you look real close you'll see it's not just disconnected, but it's been removed from the car."

So he said "Why would you want to remove it?"

Me "Because it's had a mafless tune and wouldn't fit the OTR anyway".

At this point his eyes glazed over in an apparent mini coma caused by incomprehension. When he snapped out of this at a point later on he added...

"You can't make those changes to your car... you can't remove the maf... you can't do that... you're not supposed to do that it might void the warranty"

I advised him that it was my car and I'll do what ever the f@$k I want with it.

Unfortunately dues to many pi$$ poor experiences I have had with Holden personnel with regards to warranty work and servicing I have less than zero respect for them which may be more than most of them deserve...

Most PCM's log highest RPM, temp, low oil pressure and speed.

On earthmoving equipment they also log what all guages are reading at the time the fault was detected.

I don't think the PCM will log when you have done a burnout or were speeding, unless you had high temp, low oil pressure or sat on the limiter for a while.

What have you done wrong to get so paranoid? :D

Plonker Chops,

Shirley you jest (and apologies to Flying High)!

I'D RATHER READ A FEW LINES OF TEXT IN UPPER CASE THAN a few lines of text riddled with crook spelling.

Bring on the grammar and spelling police I say! :nyuk:

The Holden Assist module (if you have it) stores several days/hours of logs apparently, i doubt the stock PCM does anything like that

I dont know if the current generation of PCM/BCM has this capability, but it has been discussed as a future agenda by the terrorcrats for data recovery in the event of a bad accident (and also to incriminate you in a court of law if you happened to be speeding, etc at the time). Scary stuff.

Since airbags became popular there has been a modicom of data logging so as to protect the manufacturers should an airbag deploy unintentionally, or fail to deploy in the event of an accident.

I am not sure of the exact amount of data stored, but GM at least store several seconds of data which can be downloaded from the ECU. As far as I know WA Police are the only ones with authority to retrieve this data, and it is and has been used in court as evidence of vehicle activity at the time of a collision or other incident.

Other major crash units may now also have this capability, but WA have been doing it for a few years now.

But its not in the PCM that that info is stored. The PIM and BCM store a lot of data that GM can look at - the general tech at a dealershi wouldnt know how to access it though so dont go getting paranoid

So if all this stuff can be logged, wouldnt it be possible to erase it all by diconnecting the battery???

Don't worry, it's only ASIO and the CIA that are receiving the data. ;)

There was an incident in Sydney a few weeks ago where a Gen111 was in an accident apparently drag racing, the police initially impounded the car then advised the owner he could have it back less the computer.

It would appear the computer is storing information looks like big brother is realy watching now!
