G'day all,has anyone out there tinkered with their stock exhaust to get a bit more noise? For example would removing the rear muffler do anything? I saw a 05VZ SS in Warnbro the other day with the tail pipes missing and not sure what else but it was pretty noisy. Does anyone know what difference there is in the standard mufflers to the aftermarket types. I'm not too technically minded but just thought I'd ask before getting the tools out & doing anything stupid.

I removed the rear resonator on my 03 SV8 when I had it and it sounded better but droned badly at certain revs. I was not worried by it given it made it sound more like a real V8, but my wife and daughter hated it if they had to sit in the back. I then got a 3" Lukey system which was relatively cheap and had quite a reasonable note (quite distinctive) and was almost drone free - a very slight drone about 1500rpm under load but you would only notice it very occasionally.
On the SS I now have a DiFilippo twin 2.5" system which is certainly louder than standard and at high revs sounds really good. EFfectively drone free - we just did close to 1000km around Tassie, lots of winding, hilly roads and very occasionally when pulling up a hill in top (A4) there was a very slight drone at about 1350rpm but as soon as you put your foot down a bit it kicked back to a lower gear and the drone went. At 100 - 110kmh inside the car it was very quiet.
If anyone around Melbourne wants to try removing their rear resonator I still have the tail section I had made up for the SV8 (by local exhaust place). Had it done in stainless and cost me about $190 with twin chrome tips (tried 3 places and that was best price I got) but am happy to give it away to someone genuine.
