View Full Version : Different way Americans approach their mods

Just thought it was interesting cruising around the American forums to see their approach to mods.
In this case CAI on a 04' Pontiac GTO.

The hole above has been cut out of the actual car.

I see it, but I dunno if it is too flash.
Cutting the chassis and having a great large silver cylinder poking out under the car is asking for a bit of trouble me thinks.

I agree. I certainly would'nt do this on my car.
I just wanted to show the contrast in how we do things over here to how some do things over there.
Knowing we've had these setups here, the Monaro that is for so many years. With many Performance Shops and individuals trying different setups. You would think these guys would do a little research and see what works and what doesnt from us. Maybe helping them avoid doing exactly what you see above.
But who are we to tell the Americans how to do things.

i was pretty sure the hole was already there already under the air box

I have never lifted my air box out, but I'm pretty sure on my 05' GTO there is no hole looking from underneath. From one of the pics in the thread you can clearly see the road beneath.
Have a read of the thread, he clearly states he cut out the hole on the body and needed to paint it to prevent rust.

I believe that hole taps into a low pressure air zone under the car, so it would not help a whole lot?
Apart from giving you cool air that the engine would have to suck up, rather than at a slight pressure.

That's nasty. He did cut the hole.
I haven't done the MCAI and second hole mod, but is this the link someone should be posting them for the second hole mod?

looks pretty close to a CAI setup I knocked together for my old VL - although it at least retained the airbox and fed into the bottom so as to prevent any engine bay hot air getting in - it was 90mm uPVC painted matt black and fed from behind the grill so as to make a ram-air effect.
This guy is wasting his time with a pod filter mounted like that drawing in a mix of cool air and hot air

What's wrong with air ducted from under front bumper, a-la Oldsmobile W30, or take out one of the quad lights and draw air from there, a-la Hemi Coronet, or cowel induction from the plenum chamber, a-la Chevelle SS .... or heaven forbid, a shaker!! :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some FI kits (GenT for example) require a similar hole to be cut in the chassis for the intake?

in one of the pics it looks like he has some sort of heat shield around the filter. maybe that reduces hot air intake from the engine bay?

...the never ending quest for Ram Air to battle the evils of heat sink. I hope it works.
Maybe someone will build us a true Ram Air intake so we dont have to go to these measures. I'll keep waiting.

My approach to mods
first day home took off silly spoiler, took off the heat retaining engine covers, took out spare, fuel tank cage ,took out spare, tools, jack, etc.
One week later added speed inc intake tube and opened up top cover for air from front edge of hood(above),removed resonators, added xpipe ,added tuner.
1 month later, removed all GTO and Pontiac badging and replaced with Monaro sidemarkers.
3 months later, 3000 stall converter

Wha? Tell me it uses the factory hood scoops. Post a pic or link if you are able to by the forum regs. I have an LS2 too, which means I have even less parts to choose from.....for now. ;)

No you didn't Dave. That happened because neither your posts nor the other one were relevant to answering the post you were replying to.
I have quoted the post I was replying to and mine is relevant to that one.

I had the same mod done to my old VX SS II...the airbox having a pipe running into the guard and sitting just behind the bumper. Got me about 6rwkw over the standard setup, although in real life, where the bonnet is closed, the benefits would be greater.
Ofcourse with VZ this cant be done because the idiots have gone and put the coolant filler pipe where the hole would have otherwise been drilled to allow this mod.

Thats pretty wild. I'd like to see the filter in that thing! Judging by the vehicle it looks pricey, but i guess you pay for what you get.
Here is the prototype of what myself and others are waiting on:

I've heard some bad things about converging air tubes like that in the C5s.
The two converging airflows apparently cause turbulance, losing optimal flow and there by power?

JHamilton you will be surprised how cheap the radiator cold air intakes actually are.... you can pick one up for around 500-600 aus dollars.
another VL owner with the sik CAI.. must be worth 15+ rwkw on the SOTP dyno..
on the OTRCAI, the setup thats been shown by cutterbob works a treat, JHamilton, many guys over here running something similar with nice gains.. guess you guys need to learn to tune in SD mode first, tho ;) (not generally MAF compatible)

Even I can't work out that title!
The Americans approach their mods differently for one main reason, money. We buy a Monaro here for A$62k paid for using our Australian income. Average incomes are higher in the US, taxes are lower and the GTO is about US$35k list, in reality about half price.
In 3 years time the Monaro will be worth about 60% in resale here in the US it will be about, well say bugger all.. So why not butcher the thing trying to get a few more ponies out of it.

If you read a lot of the posts on the american sites they try to make mods to the GTO's based on stuff they have seen on their F bodies , corvettes etc. Two completelly different kettle of fish.

average incomes in the US are nothing special, well their average standard of living is a good indication of that

Personally, I wouldn't call that cheap, but not insane for a quality product. This problem is power gains vs. $. I would be half way to a nice set of Kooks LT's for that.
I would like to have the hood scoops functional instead of hearing, "Does it really have Ram Air?"....."No, it doesn't."

Pfft...my car is my baby. If you think I'm sticking a dryer tube under my car for any gains, no way! Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
$62,000 AUS = $45, 000 US ....so for about $10-11,000 difference in cost between a GTO and a Monaro. Plus, you get climate control, a gauge pod I just paid $500 for, and a few other goodies. The difference in cost is not that great.

how many average americans can afford a GTO?
i guess a monaro is slightly expencive for most australians too tho
