In my search of a new car i am looking at VZ Clubbys, HSV have recently changed tyres, some of the clubbys i looked at (New) has 245/35-19 Pirelli P Zero Rossi's and the newer build dates have 235/35-19 Yokohame Advan Sports.

The 235 Yoko's look much smaller in profile and definatly look a bit narrow on the rims, not as nice and square looking as the Pirellis.

Drove two clubbys each with different tyres, found the yokohamas to ride a little better but seemed to have more tyre noise, and the pirellis rode a bit firmer bu are definatly quieter. expected the yokohamas to ride firmer as they have a smaller sidewall and a stretched look on the rim.

Has anyone else had experiances with either of these two tyres and what are your thoughts, as the dealer will let me have the tyres of my choice.

What Km's are people getting from these tyres ?

G'day, slightly different application to yours, but I just took some Yokohamas off my car, size 17" - they were as noisy as all buggery.

I put Dunlop SP3000a on and they are sensational wet and dry and QUIET!!!!

I know Dunlop is not OE fitment to HSV, but I am impressed with the tyre (and the price)

Have the pirellis pzero 19's on mine, will get 30,000 out of them but not much more. Was told the Yoko's will get less. I have done 25,000 thus far. Excellent grip but in my opinion tram line a bit as they get towards the end of their life span. To replace I have been told around $630 a tyre.

My plan would be to replace with something like the Hankook K104's when required, love the 18in hankooks i have on my Ute.

The pirelli's look like much better on the car.

Pirelli P-Zeros are rubbish for grip IMO. They ride great, low noise and wear well (11k on mine, and they'll go +20-25k I reckon) but at the end of the day the critical feature for tyres is grip and these Pirelli's don't have much.

Can't comment on them verses the Yokies, but they are not as grippy as the old S02 / S03 Bridgies that HSV previously fitted.

Consider that HSV only changed from Bridgies to Pirelli with the VZ series, now they have changed during that model run to the Yokies...... speaks for itself really.

Cheers,
Gordie

Just for you info Pirelli have been used by HSV throughout the VY Series 11 range.

Ive only done 3000 kays on the pirellis so i cant comment beyond the tyres doing the job quite well at the moment, grip is better then i expected, maybe a little noisy on the road, nice steering reponse etc, however when these tyres expire i will be seeking the TOYO Proxes T1-R,Ive used their motorsport variant the RA-1 and these are rated not far behind in grip, ask your dealer about putting these on.

The Toyo's are great!

Hey guys, I almost nearly bought the Toyo Proxes T1-R for my VX GTS previously riding on Pirelli P Zero Rosso's. After being notifed that they were too hard to get in NSW in 19/245/35 i went for Goodyear Eagle F1s. I picked them up on Sunday and my initial impressions are they are awesome. Loads better grip than the Pirelli's and the car feels a whole lot more responsive also. I couldnt be happier.

The Goodyear F1's are very popular with members of the local HSV club, especially those that sprint their cars.

Darryl & Dark: My bad regarding the VY2's running the Pirelli's, my comments on their (lack of) grip still stand though :burnout:

I have got Dunlop 3000Es on the front of my car and have had them for some time. I found them to be a reasonable road tyre. Not real good for anything serious and in the wet they aren't the best. I have rescently put on the rear a set of Yokohama O46 (I think they are) Quite a large block pattern tread. Veyr quiet and the grip is exceptional!!!!!! In the wet it is litterily harder to spin the wheels and in the dry it's almost impossible if i am on the move. With silverstones on it did nothing but spin.

I recently had them out at the strip and stupid me forgot to drop the pressures, so running 36psi I was still able to get 1.8 60ft. If I had have dropped them I'd probably have gone deep 1.7s possibly lower...

I have never been so impressed by a set of tyres in my life. But these things are awesome!!!!!!! It's a pity they have been superceded *spelling*

I have narrowed my choice for new tyres to the following (not very narrow yet)

Hankook Ventus S1 Evo (K107) - new premium tyre above the K104, no feedback
Toyo Proxes T1-R - No feedback yet
Michelin Pilot Sport 2 - Supposedly excellent
Yokohama Advan V103 - worried about reports of very short life, but supposedly stick like shit.
Maxxis Victra MA-Z1 - good reports but maybe risky

Wouldn't touch Pirelli or Dunlop.

I have the current F1 Eagle GS-D3s and they are very good in the wet, but in a 235/40 18 they don't make an XL version and I'm after a 95W load rating, which the above have. On a fat pig like the commodore I have found a marked improvement in squirm with the higher load rating tyres. My Yokohamas AVS ES 100 255/35 only have a 90W rating and they are terrible. Won't make that mistake a gain. The same sized goodyears are 93W and much better, and the next ones will be 95-97W, which means I also won't have to run 44psi to compensate.

Hi... This is my first post here. I drive an BMW E39 M5 which has 275/35/18's on the rear and 245/40/18's on the front.

The HSV's and M5 are simmilar in that they are sedans that have copious amounts of power. The M5 has 294kw from its 4.9lt V8.

I've currently got Conti Contact Sport 2's and they are, IMHO, garbage. Before that I had the Dunlop SP9000 which was a pretty good tyre indeed, then before THAT the Dunlop 8080E's which were also a grippy tyre. Wear life was a bit down on the 9000's but overall the 8080 was a good tyre. It did everything that I asked of it and that inclued the odd Phillip Island track day ;).

What made me join and post here was that I've done some of the BMW driver training days at phillip island in their fleet of M3's which has the P'Zero Rosso's fitted and found them to be a great tyre, quite grippy and very progressive in the level of grip it provided, interesting that some say its a rubbish tyre. Perhaps its rubbish in certain applications only?

As for the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's, they are indeed a great tyre. The M5board that I am an active member of, raves about them, but I rang up to get a quote on a set today and were quoted $850 odd for the fronts and $1000 for the rears... hardly good value for money.. I guess its that they dont sell too many here so cant match it on price. The Advan sports, K104's or T1's would be a wiser (and better value for money) choice. I've also heard good things about the F1's.

I think that any decent manufacturers top of the range tyre is going to be very good, its all about the application involved

My Pirelli tyres have lasted 22000Km with easy driving. Would like to keep the car standard and fit more pirelli and Jax has them 245/35/r19 for $530 but not sure what to do. Might try a dunlop tyre.

I had P Zero's on the Monaro a couple of years back and found them to be a good tyre overall, got around 20,000k's out of them.
Had Yokohama Advan's in 18's on a WRX and wasn't all that impressed, despite all the good reports they were just above average in the dry and average in the wet.

On previous cars i have had S02 and S03 tyres and found them good. Never got much more than 20,000km out of them.

I have an 06 VZ Clubbie with the yokie advans. I think they are a good tyre when i compare them to S02/S03. At 16,000km i had to replace the rear yokies. I would say this is not normal driving in terms of how i treat them. I would easily expect to get 20,000kms out of them which is what i got from the S02/3 tyres.

cheers

I have the Yoko Advans on mine.
Grip level good in Dry & Wet, quite a bit of road noise and tread wear is not as good as the Bridgestone So3's I had previously. I'd guess maybe 20K out of them.

I'd have to agree with Warden on this one.

My Senator is the first car I've owned ie regular driven, that has had the Zero Rossos. Their grip is marginal and not as good as high end Kumhos and Hankooks Ive had! Very quiet, minimal tram lining and so far Ive done 18,000 klms with the prospect of maybe 8~10,000 more. The price is astronomical at $600 per corner but the Advans are about $650 each. I had to replace one tyre and bought the F1 (245/35/19) for $440 at Goodyear. I couldnt shop around as I was stuck. It is quiet and sticks better than the Pirellis.

I still think you can do better value for money than these however ...

Well i have had the clubby for 30,000km's now and its just about due for new tyres. The Pirellis have been good, ahppy to get 30,000kms from them.

Now trying to decide what to fit on in there place.

Looking at either Hankook K104's or the Maxxis

What are peoples opinions ?

I'm very happy with the P Zeros on the GTO. VERY good ride, & smooth over corrugations etc. Apparently, the reason that HSV went away from Bridgestone (HSV/HRT sponsor) in the first place, was because the P Zero, at the time, was far better than anything Bridgestone had, with a 19" tyre. That may not be the case now, but I've always had a soft spot for Pirellis, & I've got no issues with the P Zeros.
Cheers, Pickles.

On the GTO I got 27,000Km's out of the P Zero's and was not very impressed with the wet weather grip, partiularly towards end of life. Am giving Toyo's a try for the first time in a number of years. They have 10,000Km's on them atm and re wearing well and give great grip in both wet and dry. As with all my cars the rubber is rotated every 5,000k's. So time will tell.

Ive been trying to find some more posts on good value for money tyres on here and havent found much. I have done 35,000kms and have shagged my 2nd set of the Pirelli P Zeros. I dont fancy paying $700 a tyre when I just wear them out in 15,000kms anyway. Ive got pricing on quite a few different types and with some investigation I think the Maxxis Z1s are probably the go. I have pricing for 245/35/19s at $265 a corner. Just wondering what everyone else has experienced. Its gotta fit in a single Dads budget!!

Pooga i have just put hankook k104s on my clubsport and could not be happier. My car would dart all over the road following any ripple in the surface with the pirellis, now the car runs nice and straight.Quite good in the wet also.
I paid $308 each from jax in northern nsw.

I ended up fitting the Maxxis MA-Z1's $250 a tyre. I was happy to spend much more than that but after much research i decided to give them a go.

Have done over 5000lms already with them and very very happy with them, Wet weather grip is 100% better than the P Zeros, Dry Westher Grip is probaly 50% better. Seem very quiet,k definatly quiter than my P Zeros, and better than the Hankooks i had on my last car.

The only down side i have noticed is they sidewalls must be a little softer, it has ever so slightly taken a little of the edge from the steering response. At first i really niticed it, but after checking the tyre pressure that the tyre place had set at 30psi, i bumped them up to 38psi and they felt much better.

Overall a great tyre, that feels better than a $800 Pirellli for only $250. Oven if i only get 20,000kms from them i will still be happy.

I have just fitted Hankook K104 Ventus Sports in 245/35R19 on the rear of my ute, the old rear tyres lasted under 10,000Kms. Paid $275 per tyre fitted :)

I have had the K104's on nearly every car I have owned and if you can get a good price on them, they are worth every cent :)

Yes, I know I've dug up an oldish one, but having fitted some 19s last week that came with Yokohama Advan Sports 235/35ZR19, I've been fairly impressed. They corner and hold the road very well in the wet, even through tight corners, no understeer/oversteer, unless you simply go in or try to come out too quickly. The only negative is that they are noisy. I'll see how they go as they wear.

Cheers,

Macca
