I have now had my Monaro CV8Z for just over a week and have noticed occasionaly when the sunroof has been open for a while and i close it, just as it fully closes i get a bang noise from it. It doesn't do it always but only when its been open for a while. Has anyone had an issue like this, is it something i can look to find/fix?

Is it a metal bang or a rubber slap type bang?

Have you tried leaving it open a while and the get out of the car and turn the ignition off and letting it close itself. You might get a better idea of where the noise is from the outside.

its like a metal bang, so far its only happened when im in the car driving, not when i turn the ignition off.

No sorry have no heard anything peculiar noise wise from my Z's sunroof.

However. I am skeptical of the alignment of mine. At the back it seems to stick up too high. Took it to dealer to get it validated - they reckon it's this way to ensure no wind noise at high speed. I agree with the concept but I think it should be a few mm lower and still acheive this. I will post some pics to see if you guys have the same alignment.

I have a sunroof in my VY clubby and noticed the same problem every now and then. I think you will find it is small wind deflector that pops up when you open the sunroof flat. When you open the SR at an angle the WD pops down again and this also occurs when you close the SR. The WD going up and down is the banging noise

I noticed that to, but when im driving there is wind noise coming from the sunroof. Its as if its not sealed properly and air is being sucked out....

hi guys

cant say ive heard that clunky sound on mine......but i did notice that there's a bit of wind noise coming through the sunroof at higher speeds (100km/h+)

I'll have to get it looked at at the first service.....

by the way - can you guys do me a favour and check out your instrument clusters right window....do you have a flickery display of the LEDs showing INST FUEL CONSUMP etc when the lights are on and its viewed from an angle (say from the passenger seat?)

Can't say I've noticed, and I'm quite picky. And I was only in the passenger seat once - drunk, the whole world was flickery.

What is also could be, is when the sunroof closes it comes out from inside the roof on a slight angle, the rear end of the SR pops up right at the end of the close, ensuring it that the glass sits flush with the roof.

But it all depends what sought of sound it is? if its bad enough to piss you of then there is obviously something wrong, take it back to the sunroof manufacturer, even though the it came with the car most times the dealer sends the car to an after market sunroof place to get fitted.

Hope this helps.

My sisters Audi, also has a sunroof, the car is only 2 months old, and while the all car windows are closed and the sunroof is fully open, the wind vibration is unbearable. I mean you can't even continue driving unless you close the the SR or open a window slightly. In this case i think the WD isn't working properly and the cabin is just to air tight (well built, unlike mine) which wont allow the incoming air to escape, this is what makes the vibrating noise.

Just to make youo feel better. :D

Ok I've done an inspection - at night, lights on and in passenger seat and everything looks in order. Take the sucker in.

On a side note. The climate control. while in Auto mode you can adjust the fan speed (F1 F2 F3). Is there any noticible diffeence between the 3 modes without going jumping out to manual fan control? I certainly cannot notice - but I swear that I could feel the difference when car was new.- is something screwed ?

Manual mode definetly blows weak through to strong quite distinctly.

Cheers,
Muz

Thanks Muz! Ive got the General booked in for Tuesday for an oil change and i'll mention it then!

I'll check out the climate control tomorrow and let you know how mine is....

Hey Muz

I checked out my Z's climate control on AUTO and changed the Fan Speed - same thing as you! Seems like theres no difference between F1, F2 and F3 speeds! :(

Had a look in the manual (p1-44) and it says that "when in Auto mode, all functions including the fan speed does into auto mode. When the fan is operating automatically - the blades (in the graphic display) are clear." That makes sense - AUTO means it will automatically adjust the speed depending on how it needs to operate to cool/heat the car's interior!

The next paragraph is where it contradicts itself though...it says "In Auto mode 3 sets of fan speeds are available for individual preference (which can be changed with the ^ buttons)" - I'm truly stumped!!

So the moral of the story is - mine doesnt have varying speeds either! I will ask the techs on Tuesday about this too....

Thanks for the effort zacz. Really appreciate it. It's wonderful that we can all stick together like this a validate each others queries. Let us know what the techs say. I've still got ~1700km before I go in !

No worries Muz! Yeh - it sure is good! Feels like we're one big family :D

By the way - Got the scare of my life tonite when i went to pick up my girlfriend...her driveway is on an incline and theres a steel bar in the middle where the gates lock. Anyway, the Z scraped on the way in....but then on the way out i actually got stuck on it!!! The car wouldnt move back! Scary! In the end I backed out at an angle and just made it out...

Not sure what part it was that stuck on the bars..maybe the diff? But it sure made me worry that Ive damaged something!

Yet another thing I'll have to get the techs to look at next week!

So just be careful guys - these Monaros are actually quite low!!!

The wind noise you will be getting at higher speeds will be coming from the drains in the air cavity space. This is normal.
The clang you will be getting from the the front will be to do with the Wind deflector as it is depressed by the roof as it comes forward.

I've scraped my previous SS on weird and wonderful things more times than I've had hot dinner and it was never an issue. These things are quite resiliant.

Anyway have a look at this fellows under car shots to orientate yourself more or less where it could have caught...

Heh, yeah. I really can't remember where I got those. I just have a bookmark - it may have been from someones post on the forum most likely.

If you go up in the folder there are many other shots of the interior and of full exhaust mod even.

Hy Muz

A busy day today - spent almost entirely looking after the Z....

I also had an alignment issue with my sunroof (windrush from the front at approx 100km/hr+....

Here's the lowdown according to SUNROOF CITY (who are the experts with this sunroof in Adelaide and fit the non-factory fit roofs for holden)

The Z has the HOLLANDIA 700 sunroof and it is fitted at the factory by Holden.

The techie used a piece of paper and threaded it down the edge of the roof (from outside) and then slid it around the entire roof - what you are looking for is even-ness of paper movement / tension as it moves around and this tells you that the spacing between the roof and the frame is even. If you feel more resistance on one section than the rest, that shows an alignment issue.

He did mention that the front section of the roof is normally slightly lower than the back section (which is raised just a bit) and this counteracts noise. He adjusted my roof very slightly so we will see if thats fixed it!

The other thing that they can do to fix wind noise issues is to insert some padding under the rubber roof frame surround...but thats only under extreme circumstances apparently!

Hope that clarifies things a bit!

Nice one zacz. Did you happen to see how he aligned it? Is it as easy as some pivet screw any monkey with a screwdriver can adjust ?

hi Muz

yeh it looked easy - was less than a 10 minute job!

he pulled off 2 plastic sliding tabs on the sides of the roof.then he used a screwdriver and adjusted a couple of screws...dont remember which direction (he was a big lad and obscured some of the view!) :D

But he did also tell me that the flap at the front wasnt well adjusted and he gave that a bit of an adjustment too! Seems that if that front flap isnt dropping down properly when the roof is closed, it causes the roof not to seal properly either!

I have finally worked out what was wrong with it. It seems somehow the fabric slider which you manually close was not in its tracks. It was like that since i got it. coz i found it wierd when i could fully close it when the rear of the sunroof would be open.

Hey bud, how much did they charge you for this job? my roof is making some noises aswell, ill have a play at it myself but would be good to get the pros to fix it completely.

Edit: sorry to dig up an old thread, just all i could find that was remotely useful
