After waiting for 6 months for holden to supply me with a Gem engine as my VY1 SS has a knock I have now been told that they will not be supplying me with a motor as most vehicles receiving Gem engine's generaly run or sound worse after the new motor now my motor starts dead quiet runs well made a healthy 240rwkw's and uses no oil but once the motor is warm an audible knock is present (gudgon pin noise I assume )what troubles me is I am almost out of New car warranty and want to know if this noise is going to get louder. Do I demand a Gem engine or has anyone had any success with oil's to reduce this noise I am curently using penrite HPR15 please HELP.... :(

Waited six months for a replacement? Find another dealer. The only "acceptable"(?) noise when warm/hot is overhead gear ticking .. any knock, slap, etc is bad news. I'd *try* the oil suggestion, but I doubt this is a root cause. If they have given up on GEMs, I'd be demanding a rebuild. This sounds like it's all gone to far now.

As a side issue, a quick update on my GEM engine. After a lot of initial problems - ie. excessive oil consumption, leaking rear-main and sump - it's redeemed itself after 10,000km and become a decent engine. It still starts quiet, no knocking/slapping when warm, has stopped using oil, and feels like it nearly has the same amount of power as the old engine. It's got a few little "ticks" when hot, but that doesn't worry me. If I could just get them to restamp the 01 block to match my 03 car I'd be totally happy :)

Mine goes in for a rebuild on the 14 Nov, I hope it's fine afterwards. I did not have any problems with my dealer, infact they have gone out of their way to help even offering a replacement car while mine is in the shop.

Unfortunatly I dont think any dealers in perth offer a rebuild only a Gem replacement and can anyone recomend a perth dealer that has been helpfull on their engine issues.

I was told by Holden here that they send off paperwork to head office and they are the ones that make the call as to either a rebuild or gem.
Not happy with the quality of the car so far  but happy with the after sales warranty side of it. :D

I think it depends on the amount of k's that youve done Darryn.
Despite general opinions that Gem engines are shit, mine is , as Ive mentioned ad infintum, quite a good engine. I have no oil consumption issues or bottom end knocks etc etc and for a stocker with exhaust and extractors goes quite well for what it is . I do however have an annoying ticking noise which at first sounds like buggered lifters but if you open the bonnet its quiet as a mouse . On ramps its coming from the very bottom of the extractor where it changes direction to go under the car ( answers anyone??)

nope sounds like a hollow wooden hammer hitting your block. more of a
' doonk' hollow noise that a ' tick ' noise :p Lifters sound more like someone belting your rocker covers with a screwdriver ( sort of in comparison )
edit: as recomended by my friendly ls1 expert I use Penrite HPR 30 every 5000 clicks
For the record I bought my car from Metro Morley and they were quite up front about it all and told me at the time of the 6 replacement gem motors that they were about to replace in the next fortnight ( which he, the workshop manager ) duly pointed out to me sitting in the corner of the workshop

I have had my VY SS S1 since Friday and only yesterday have noticed this very same slight ticking noise.. sound slike its coming from the left side exhaust manifold area.. and is louder down near the wheel well when listening from the outside.. but if ya rev the car a bit it goes all quiet.. only on idle can you notice the very slight noise.. now the SS drives perfectly and isnt using up any oil.. so should I be worried at all or just get its sussed out at my next service in bout 6000ks time @ holden..?

Cheers fellas..

P.S. The car is a 6 speed manual and i also get fair bit of vibration through the clutch pedal and gear stick sometimes too.. is that normal?

Isn't that noise actually caused by the extractors themselves, not a problem with motor? I thought i read somewhere it was because of thinner material used in extractors, compared to cast headers?!

Well thats what Im hoping....couldnt really be anything else I guess. Theyre HM headers Im lead to believe . I cant tell them all apart.....just sounds real crap when driving for example through an enclosed alleyway

You'd think a sports car like the VY SS would come with extractors.. though im pretty sure mines got like stock exh manifolds on it... with metal covers..

They are stock exhaust manifolds with the metal covers chuck them asap and the vibration through the stick and clutch pedal is normal.

An easy way to check for extractor/manifold leaks is with a length of garden hose. Like a Doctor's stethescope hold one end to your ear and the other end at various points on the extractors. If its leaking you'll hear it quite loudly through the hose.
