Is anyone contemplating buying a new GTO Coupe, not the LE, just the "ordinary" one? If so, what is the best ON THE ROAD price you have been quoted. Apparently the RRP is $78990 + approx $5000 ORC, making a total of $84000!!!- there's no way I'm paying that. I've seen good deals on Clubsports-$54k driveaway, but nothing on GTOs-So what have you guys been quoted on a GTO, driveaway. Cheers, Pickles.

So just what does the GTO have over and above the already high performance Monaro to warrant that kinda dough ?
I've been trying to work it out - and I really cannot put my finger on it no matter what angle I look at it from.
Certainly the Monaro is a huge bang for the buck. The GTO seems to be quite the opposite.
Happy to be convinced otherwise.

A very good question- Whilst I don't agree that "it's quite the opposite", I'm still trying to convince myself!!
I suppose the main feature would be the 297KW LS2 engine, which equates to very stong performance in standard form-- if I could have our Series 111 with the LS2 in it, I'd probably be happy with that. Cheers, Pickles.

Hi,
I still can't believe that we are the only suckers in the world buying Monaro's with LS1's.
I know Holden have their reasons for it, but hell, fancy selling an LS2 Monaro to the Poms and the good old Aussie convicts are still getting second best.
Holden would have sold that many LS2 Monaros in Aus it wouldn't be funny. I know I would have brought another one.... Bugger!

I've been tossing around whether to get a new GTO as well. The old girl (She's nearly a year old now) has 30K up and I'm thinking mod mania or just buy the GTO and get it over and done with. Still that extra 20 - 30 odd grand to swap over is going to hurt..... :( But when it comes down to it LS1 LS2 - They are both V8's. Is the extra 300cc's worth 20 - 30K? How much could I get done for that to the VZ? Would it be worth more long term to have the GTO instead of the Monaro? So many questions so many opinions. I'm so confused. Who the hell started this thread?

I started the thread!! From some angles, the VZ GTO is reasonable value. A new CV8Z is going to cost $64k on road. For $16k more you can have a GTO, which is a much rarer car, more powerful, & faster. You also get sports seats, suspension, 19" wheels, & most importantly,( & this is what it's all about for me anyway), you get the magnificent LS2 engine, which is GM's newest high performance "niche" engine. Whilst I know what you mean, because I originally thought this myself, it's not "just another 300ccs"! I've spoken to a few well known performance operations in Melbourne, who have all conceded that the LS2 is a "piece of work", & a big step forward from LS1, with enormous potential.
So, before anyone decides to flame me, I'll just confirm that I'm not knocking the CV8Z or any other Monaro- I love them all. And I haven't bought a GTO yet. We've got a Series 111, which we think is really great, I'm not going to "give it away", so if I can't get a good price, I'll keep it.
It's just that if one is planning to do a few "mods" the price adds up, & that's when the GTO starts to look good, particularly with LS2--probably LS2 owners might know what I mean. Cheers, Pickles.

Are the seats actually any different ? I realise they have different stitching and the HSV logo, but other than that ? they don't look it.
Other than this yes they are better, I personally don't like the body kit though.............wish Holden had sneeked the LS2 into the CV8Z.

Yes, I think we all think CV8Z should have had LS2!!
As far as the GTO seats are concerned, I think they're the same basic seats (frames) as Monaro, but with different leather, covers, larger bolstering etc.
Cheers, Pickles.

lets face it HSV is the car to have im a HSV fan and would not consider the monaro. i bought my GTO ls2 for $72,000.00 drive away with 86km on the clock. read the specs and you will find considerable differences between the two. Gearbox, diff strengthening holden does not appear on the car :D rims
body kit, i think the leather is of better quality. brakes suspension, read the facts, this is my 3rd HSV.. people that somewhat do not consider a hsv's, have you driven one for a day and then jumped into a standard holden monaro there is a considerable difference between the two. HSV da man with the ls2 :D or the standard 6 year old ls1 .

I wouldn't mind one for that sort of money! Cheers, Pickles.

Can I go on record as thanking Holden for not putting the LS2 in the Monaro. Probably stopped the value of my car from falling through the floor :D
Evening,
Remember our bet Pickles!
I am not apologising yet, and if you even have the slightest doubts about what I have said all along, wait!
How does a 6.0 with DOD and Headwork that is very "interesting" sound?
Cheers,
Hogs, ;)

Sweet deal there I reckon.
As I paid 64 for the Z I would've only had to take down 1 more TAB and I'd be in one too...
Just a question the only demos I've seen are always autos.
Did you score a manual ? What color ?

For the extra money you do get a few things the monaro doesnt get. The obvious being an LS2. But you would also get uprated suspension, uprated sway bars, Ohlins shocks?, strut bracing, 19 inch wheels, body kit, premium sound, climate control, uprated seats, uprated exhaust, uprated intake, uprated diff gears (not so sure with LS2 though they may have the lower ratio).
So for your money not bad. I would be interested to see if someone can build a HSV from their stock Monaro for the same money.
Your other option is if you are only interested in an LS2 $10,000 drive away will get you a stroker kit that will be bigger then an LS2 and will pretty much be the same thing engine wise as the LS2 is just a stroked out LS1 anyway? Left over change will get you a descent brake package, and as for handling the monaro is pretty good anyway.
In saying all this though it still wont be a HSV if its the badge you are after and resale will hurt. The beuty with a HSV is that most of the work is done for you handling, stopping and looks wise all you need to do is make them breath.
Oh and also insurance wise. Try insuring a modded out Monaro thats pretty much GTO spec, good luck!

Some of the things you mention are over zelous there. The climate control and sound system are indentical as far as I know. The Monaro also has strut brace...maybe GTO has more or bigger..dunno.
Here is a spec sheet if anyone cares to study it closely...

Just checked it out myself. GTO and VZ(cv8z) Monaro have the same T56 Manual gearbox or the same 4L65e Auto. Exact same gear ratios.
Front brake's are both 320x32mm on GTO and Monaro. GTO comes out ahead with rear being 315x18mm, Monaro only has 286 x 188.
GTO gets thumbs up with HSV specifc suspension and exhaust. But really, if you don't do the exhaust anyway, you need to be slapped regardless.

The Gto has the 4l65E HMD uprated transmission as well as higher stall converter and lock up clutch The manual gets the M12 the same as the corvette as well as a upgrade clutch
there is quite a few other differences here is the link to most of them

As I've said in a previous post, I think any Monaro is a great bit of gear, but if you are looking at buying a new one, then doing some mods, the GTO starts to look ok. It's not just the LS2, it's the whole drivetrain- tailshaft, half shafts, diff, suspension, exhaust etc etc. And I'm not pushing HSV's barrow, it's just that from some angles the GTO starts to look good value. Cheers, Pickles..
