With the Ford boys enjoying their $600 stripes on their FPVs and Holden trying lame imitations on the SV6000 and GTO LE, I wonder if the VE will see the revival of the red stripe on the SS?

Yes it was killed off for VT, being considered lacking in the class that the new shape demanded, but surely a restyled red stripe (or black for red cars) could stand a chance if it was done correctly.

I had a VS SS II in Botanica Mica with the red stripe and red grills and I thought and still think that it was a nice bit of kit.

Maybe its time for Holden to abandon the hushed up, low tier European undertones in its styling and revive the loud and proud american muscle car styling of the 70s. It could do this legitimately because of the heritage it has inherited from the 1990s SSs.

What do you think?

I couln't believe what I saw when I walked into Booran Holden Cheltenham yesterday! They had a new Turismo VZ Monaro on the floor--they had put white stripes along the lower part of the doors, & placed a "matching" large white "350" decal on the front guard!!- It looked absolutely shocking, I can't imagine why anyone would want to spoil a VZ Monaro in such a way!! If you're down that way, drop into the showroom & have a look. Cheers, Pickles.

My Dad bought one like that. Its yellow with black stripes though. In all honesty whilst not for me (i like my black car  ) it does grow on you.
Yes I know they are GT-P stripes and yes I do give him a hard time about them, but he is not a "car buff" He simply bought a car he liked in isolation from anything else.

I thought we got to the stage where didn't need things like 'stripes' to separate fastcars from taxis. I have seen the YJ Monaro with GT-P type stripes and all I can say is it looks try-hard.

damn
just seen this post when I got back in....and I had my phone (mit camera) too
when I was at Booran and yes
I went to Spares and had to walk past it ..it has pride of place out front of the showroom driveway
Pickles is not quite right..the two broad stripes are in fact a very light silver
in colour ( I can see where he got white from) and the '350' sticker on the guards is that used on the rearboot lid on the HG350 (I know, I stuck one on my HT350 when I had it)

opinion?
I can see some people being happy with the striping..its very GT-P like
but its not my cuppa tea
the 350 sticker is completely outta place...I was even thinking of giving the New Car sales manager (who I know) as earful ..its dreadful
and of course, as we all know its only a '346' not a '350'

I most likely have to go back there tomorrow, will try and get a piccie
with the phone

Thanks Smitty- I didn't look that closely-- but you see what I mean, & I agree with your definition - "dreadful"!!. I'd be interested to know what the new car sales manager says to you, if you speak to him.- Actually, I wasn't too impressed with the salespeople there either. Went in (this is when I noticed the Monaro!) & asked to speak with someone about a GTO, & it was at least 5 minutes before someone came to speak to me, whilst at the same time there were a group of salespeople just lounging around & talking, in a front office!! Not impressed with the salesman either,(when someone did finally speak to me) but it was worthwhile going in there just to see that "Monaro"!!- Also saw a CV8Z, & an "ordinary" new Monaro on the lot. Cheers Pickles.

Red stripes on SS Commodores and michael Jacksons moonwalk should of been banished from day one.

I must add I think since the VT1 Holden has been getting the SS styling spot on! Not as full on as the HSV but still enough to stand out from the rest of the range. To me the SS looks smooth and a bit more classy then the HSV range. I just hope they dont change this formula for VE.

I agree to a point that they look good already but as ford are doing it shouldn't we do it as well but BETTER EG Black stripes down the middle as the old monaro's had

whether or not we follow Ford is a mute point
and whether they should be on GM products is up to the design and marketing
teams ...their answer, I guess will be based on whether the stripes help sell
more cars :D

and down the middle on the old Monaros?
from memory....
the HK had a driver side split stripe
my ol' HT350 had 2 middle stripes
and the HG 350?
no stripes on the roof or bonnet
only 2 mean looking sidewinder stripes..one on each side

The stripes on the HSV GTO Coupe are well executed IMHO! I would have also put them on the roof tho - otherwise I quite like them!

Some times things are best alone, good cars dont need crap plasted
over them as pickles said about the monaro. I for one would not touch
my cv8z or any other nice holden vehicle, let the ford dicks have their
strips

Stripes are very retro, and I think they generally don't have a place on a modern car. Some more subtle strip/s somewhere on the car perhaps, but not a simple large one on the bonnet or doors. IMO its a bland car that needs stripes to make it look mean. The Falcon GT (and Ford GT for that matter) does look alright with the stripes but I think that would date very quickly and there could have been better way to make it stand out. But I do think, on the whole, stripes are starting to come back to some degree. Interesting to see what happens in the next few years.
