What’s the best approach here?

If I find a second hand car privately and I'm interested subject to an inspection what’s the best way to handle the transaction? If I leave a deposit and find the car doesn’t check out how do I get my money back? What’s the best way to organise things?

Its pretty rare for an inspection to come back that bad that you'll walk away from it. The inspection is there as a bargining tool. If you can get the owner to agree to an inspection without a deposit, then great, otherwise pay the deposit and get it inspected by a trusted mechanic or by someone else. The NRMA Inspections are really worth the paper they are written on these days
