Use the search function and you'll find plenty of info. Basically depends on how much you want to spend, do you want to pay for stainless or will mild steel do, what other mods do you intend doing (dual 2.5" seem fine for stock or lightly modified, big mods need more) etc.

Best brands seem to be DiFilippo and Sureflo. I have a 2.5" dual DiFilippo on mine and it sounds good (to me). Not really throaty (seems you need extractors for that) but a nice V8 note not loud enough to be cop bait unless you are being idiotic with it.

Look no further, get the full Di Fillipo system and you wont regret it. And If you really want the great V8 super car sound, then ditch the rear resinator. Believe me, i've done it and i love every minute driving.

Note: mine has the the REDBACK catback system, i had it on before i purchased the headers and cats therefore didn't need to purchase the di fillipo cat back. :D

Hmm I dunno about ditching the rear muffler on a Difilipo system, I tried it and it wasnt for me, droned all the way to 2000 rpm (ie from 60-100km/h)
Not a nice note either, when under load.

Each to their own I guess.

Everyone has different taste, I personally think a
twin 2.5 sounds better than the single 3.5. Haven't
heard the twin 3 inch though.

ive got a twin 2.5 atm, now i like it and all, but it sounds a world away from the 3.5.

i guess ive grown up around meaty old v8's, to me the closest exhaust sound for the ls1 to those is the 3.5. the 2.5 just doesnt get there, unless you run hotdogs in the middle, and no rear res, but then drone becomes too annoying for regular driving.

A lot of the "Off the Shelf" systems drone inside the car. So when you say you don't want it too loud, I guess you are sensitive to drone.

Everyone has a different idea of drone. Some of the suggestions that have been made here will give you a lot of drone inside the car.

Off the Shelf systems are made to a price, not a quality. They all come in one loudness, which most people are happy with, but a fair percentage are not.

This system also drones, so he has had his standard system put back on. Now he is paying for his 3rd system, and I will guarantee he will be happy with it, as we make it to what the customer wants.

So if you decide to get a system elsewhere, just ask them to guarantee it is drone free. If it drones, you want them to make it drone free without restricting it (or charging you extra), or give you your money back.

going to switch to short 4-1's, opened factory cats, loud 3.5 stainless in the next couple of months :)

first bit is becuase the ute is below 100mm with the low hanging cats, i wanna go back to original position. second bit is coz i want a beefier sound! and then ill be adding a mid 220's cam etc, should be fun!

haha good one man, almost as good as the VZ SS exhaust note.

I certainly would be happy to sacrafice .2sec 0-100 in order to actully hear my V8 burbling, to get 260kw, to get the 500nm of torque to go with the power, and to be able to wind down the window and put my foot to the floor and hear a good ol aussie V8 barking behind me, and to get a car that looks hot. I think any man would.

Guess im not going to get much supoprt seeing as its a holden forum. By the way im not anti holden i love the monaros and those HSV's are hot!!! But when it comes to the SS (expecially VZ) im ashamed.

They sound even better with an exhaust. My neighbors got a stock VY SS and a stock XR8 ute. His a bit of a rev head and i can always tell which one it is when im inside and i hear one rev up. Unbiasdly the XR8 does sound alot better. especially above 4000rpm when the note comes in hard.

i have also riden shootgun in a car with a diffilipo 2.5" twin cut after the diff and my god, the note is PERFECT, a slight crackle on de-cel, but not heaps of poping.

i'm getting the same for my VZ ute but with flanges so i can bolt the rear resonator on if i know i will be near cops, because without the reso its loud, somewhere near sureflows 8 loudness rating
