View Full Version : GTO + Evo IX

Well just bought a Red Evo IX to go in the garage with the GTO.
Reasons (Excuses):
Wife: Since we both have 2 door cars now,we need a four door car with a decent boot for those times when we have to take the mothers with us or the kids and a boot load of luggage, and its just a lancer with a few more sporty bits. ;)
Accountant: Well, GTO $90,000.00 + Evo IX $60,000.00, its still less then the M3 I was going to buy last year, stop whinging and just tell me how I'm going to pay for it. :bash:
Me: Lets see 4 doors, Boot, already got a V8, Typhoon Nah to big, STI, nice but can't get used to wearing my baseball cap backwards all the time, Evo IX just have to do. :driving:
First Impressions (test drive only, don't pick up till next week): Not as quick as the LS2 dead slow below 3000revs (I think my mother-in-laws Jazz is quicker there), have to get used to driving with a lot more revs then my lazy LS2, but that steering and handling is something else, feels like a go-kart compared to the GTO, man does it handle. Colour can't decide between Red or Blue wanted white but none in Aus till end December, I think Red because they go faster
Cheers all

I've got a Monaro, & I love it, so I'd like to agree with you!! But the LS2 makes the GTO a bit more than that- I'm not really into bodykits, but the combination of the magnificent LS2 engine, a fully strengthened driveline, tailshaft, half shafts, shot peened diff, & the interior's not bad, all add up. Cheers, Pickles.

I think you took me wrong Pickles. mid life was saying that as far as his wife is concerned the Evolution is "just a Lancer with a few more sporty bits" and I was saying that's like saying a GTO is just a monaro with a few more sporty bit's. Not really true but to a woman that's basically all they see.

I love Evo's, they are probably one of my favourite cars :) I think you should have bought an EVO 6 Tommi Makkinen Edition though ;) Those things are mean!

The TME Evo's are apparently the best ones ever made, and the quickest of the bunch too. Could you tell I was sarcastic? :bash:

I think they were the best ones made for someone who wanted to enter it into Targa Australia ... u may as well take the seat away and sit on the floor ... rough as guts...
However, he did say he wanted a car for a boot and 4drs, which means his wife has him by the balls :D , so really the tommi call was silly ... however I agree with u that the tommi is a mean "lancer with sporty bits"

 Yeah that's the thing that lets the 6's down, the interior is basically just 'sporty bits' with Recaro's and climate control... At least his wife has him by the plums in a good way, I wouldn't mind a wife that wants an evo

... STI, nice but can't get used to wearing my baseball cap backwards all the time, Evo IX just have to do. :driving:
If the STi is a "backwards baseball cap" car then an EVO is too
Personally the EVO just doesn't do it for me, I would go the STi for sure. Well done though, I am sure you will have a ball ... enjoy

Had the pleasure of a weekend with an Evo 8 over the Clipsal weekend, have a mate in the right job at mitsubishi. A nice yellow one. Off boost i think your right about it getting beaten by a Jazz, but just so much fun on the boost, nothing like a V8, very different but very addictive. Very jealous, would love to have one in the driveway as well as a V8. One of the best gear changes and steering package i have driven. It was ashame to have to hand it back.

I havent driven the Evo.. but it sounds like it might have a bit more low down ? I looked at the 2005 STi before the clubby.... I had to get out and push it until it hit 4000rpm... talk about a poor daily driver :p
Also I think the EVO is a little more exclusive than the STi... good choice I say:D

The turbo's should be a lot more responsive than that, I'd think they'd start to pick up from about 3000rpm, but yeah haven't driven one so I can't speculate. But yeah, a lot of you guys are probably a lot more used to instant power with a v8. All you need to do with a turbo is a 4k clutch dump ;)

The difference between a Commodore Acclaim and a GTS is far less than the difference between a Lancer and an EVO. Keep the 'rice' prejudice out of the thread. ;) Very nice purchase mate. :)

Evos are beautiful cars mate. They are bloody one of the quickest 4 cylinders you can buy from factory and it handles like its on rails. No way its a lancer with extra bits. They only share the same shell and thats where it ends. Good job on buying one :)

4k clutch dumps at every set of lights tend to draw some uneccessary attention though :p
I drove the astra turbo.. and that thing kicked in max torque at 2500rpm... I was very impressed.... so obviosly turbo's can take off alot earlier than the STi.
I kind of likened the STi to a two stroke motorbike before the days of power valves.
Before I drove it i read posts where people said "they're ok driven daily, i find i can usually keep up with traffic under 4000".... and i didn't really understand it til i drove one :p
All i know from the reviews is they said the Lancer had a broader power spread... not "jeckyl and hyde" as they called the STi in BFYB.
Maybe a bigger exhaust system reduces turbo lag on em... not sure... they're a big turbo though.. and therefore take some effort to spin up.

In the latest Wheels, or it might be Motor, bnot sure. But anyways they test drive the MY06 STi with the 2.5L engine. Peak torque has gone up 30NM IIRC, and the jekyl and hyde persona has all but gone thanks to more cubes.

I thought it was 50Nm ??? But yes, they said there was heaps of torque down low now and that the STi pulled comfortably from low revs and then went ballistic at around 4000 rpm ... sounds like a big improvement over MY05

Thank god for that! :D..... now when is it gonna be 3 litres ? :)
One of the primary reasons i looked at it was because they seemed to do so well on depreciation... but lately they seem to be going as cheaply as everything else...
GTO & Evo, thats got to be the best of both worlds. The reckon the Evos are just getting quicker and quicker to the point of it being almost stupid (In a good way of course).
Heck in the UK you can buy a Evo FQ350 or FQ400. Whats FQ mean?? Stands for "Farkin Quick" :D , witih 350 or 400 hores shoe horned into it.
Its basically a manafactuer's version of a modified car, with a new car warranty. Different Heads, Different Turbos, Bigger Intercooler, different suspension, and all the other "Must Have" go fast goodies, all with a new car warranty. Now THAT i like :nyuk:
Good Purchase mate, im very jelous of you, i can imagine it will be a lot of fun to drive, and as you said, the cornering ability is meant to be second to none.

Yeah the M3 is quick, had one for a couple days last year but I still feel a well tuned LS1 or 2 would hold its own in a straight line and like you said the exhaust note is bloody awfull compared to a V8.

Exactly, and from what I have read that extra performance is only accessable on a race track anyway :D

Just picked up the car. On the way back I lined up behind my son who was driving my recently edited LS2 GTO, on the on ramp to the M1 and I can tell you he getting away from me, not by much but I know I wasn't catching him, but I only had 30k's on the EVO.
Time will tell. :burnout:
