Not to burst anyone’s bubble but we had a car with a canary sticker on it and the customer wanted me to pass his ET Radials because everybody is claiming that they are street legal so for all you claiming for street trim think again Vic Roads have just left my shop and said we can't pass them for street use.
Has any other workshop experienced different?
Mick.
There could be a new record holder for street trim......

I would think MT meant street as in street series bracket of racing?? dunno for sure, but they would never comply with a Holdens tyre placard and the allowances by law to deviate from the placard to start with,, Am I on the right track here??
Aps fston?? shot through huh,

ET Street Radials are listed as follows on the Amercan site:
Mickey Thompson’s legendary race tire technology comes to the street with the all-new ET Street Radial. Built using the latest in high tech radial construction techniques and years of drag racing experience and compound development, this D.O.T. approved street legal drag radial will get your car down the track in record time and drive you home with sure handling and an excellent ride.
The ET Streets are purely a drag tube tyre.

DOT approved in the US doesnt make them DOT approved here. The US department of transport is not Australia's.

Re55's and Nittos given the thumbs up... to date we have not put the MT Drag Radials to the acid test with QLD Transport, although no problems experienced with SV8 when car was given a 20 minute *once over* by roadside inspectors..of course this may have more than a little to do with driver attitude in my experince.

I think that the tyres are supposed to have a weight rating to be truely legal.
of course this may have more than a little to do with driver attitude in my experince.
As it so very often does. :)

same as anything it would have to be an alert copper to realise the difference ,
they have a mixture of material ply in the tread area and 2 ply walls . not sure of the load rating they have but I do remember not enough for the tonner.

Mick, was it because of the vehicles minimum requirements as printed on the placard or because of the tyre's construction itself.
Legally the tyre on the car MUST meet the minimum requirement in both size and load rating and construction as what is printed on the vehicles tyre placard. It must also be the same size and construction across the axle. Ie no radial and crossply on the same axle.
So for all you guys out there with SS's and HSV's, as soon as you get a puncture and replace your nice alloy rim for that piece of shit stocky or spacesaver that holden give you, your car is now not roadworthy, and technically if you crashed the car not insured! Hows that for CRAP!!
no that sucks the big banana grant!!

Hey Bigfella - on the SV8 at least the poxy 205-65-15 is listed and legal (albeit with warnings about not exceeding 80kph and death and nuclear holocaust soon to follow etc).
Maybe the SS etc are different?

Yup, from what I know the ET Street Radials aren't truely legal but we're a bit more relaxed up here and have had 3 officers kindly tell me they can't see a problem with them. Wouldn't want to try my luck with an insurance company after a claim though

Its got nothing to do with tyre sizes, as these ET radials were within the tyre placard. The dot rating is approved in the states, not Aust. There are not sufficient markings on the side wall, so they are not street legal. This was the third car that I have questioned Vic Roads on, but its the first time they have actually came out and inspected the tyres and said they are not legal.

My spare is identical to my other 4 rims?
I take it HSV are penny pinching nowadays......

US DOT has no bearing in OZ. In OZ, all tyres must be load rated and of radial construction. These ET Streets have no load rating and so cannot be approved for use on OZ roads. The BFG Drag Radials have a load rating and so are the only purpose drag tyres legal for use in OZ.
The load rating must be adequate for your car. Too low and its still illegal and could very well not be covered by insurance. I think the Holdens must have a load rating of 91 or better.

How to read your Tyre placard/Tyre Markings (http://www.btc.net.au/tyrecare/markings.asp) this (http://www.btc.net.au/tyrecare/markings.asp) I thought there was heaps of info on the sidewalls but maybe the transport dept cant do the math.

My mate who has just bought a new Grange is having a dummy-spit at present. He discovered that he only had a "get-home" spare and so he ordered a matching wheel and tyre ($1600 FFS!) and is now threatening to post the old one back to the MD of HSV with some explicit instructions as to where to stick it!

Just curious, but I just brought some brand new ET Street Radials and they have the size, load rating (not load index) and tread wear indicators but they dont have a speed rating. Have they changed the tyre markings or have they always had this. The tyre bloke putting them on the rims actually brought it up.
