Smitty was it just a simple case of the 2 year warranty was ending soon and they did a cold start assessment and or an oil consumption test? or was it more terminal?

mate
the full story has been posted elsewhere here....
but
basically the original engine suffered oil consumption and piston
noise problems from day1..the selling dealer said that was normal, so
did the next dealer until the next dealer went whaaaa... when I mentioned
I had put 5 litres in it in the first 10,000k. It immediately went on an oil
consumption test which was stopped 3500k late when 1.9lt got added
or oil usage of about 5.7ltr/10,000km ...plus the piston noise issue
which was there hot or cold.
That engine got rebuilt (new pistons rings etc) and it also got new heads
as they were pitted from all
the detonation and pinging (oil in combustion chamber)..and away I went.
At the 20,000 service (same dealer who did rebuild) I got a phone call
to say they were not happy with the engine noise and were referring car to Holden.
Car went back a few weeks later for Holden Field Service Mgr
to drive and listen to and afterwards, I was told a new engine would be fitted
due to unacceptable engine noise in the valve train, bearing and piston areas.
Car went into dealers about 6-8 weeeks later and was met with a new* engine in a crate
..out with the old, in with the new and the dealer did all the paperwork with Vicroads
and provided a letter for my insurer re the change of engine number.
20,000k later, new engine is quiet and uses no oil  and
i ran it in exactly the same way as I did the first engine..nice and easy for the first 2,000km
(varying revs and loads and no hispeed runs)

* I am not sure engine was 'brand' new or a completely remanufactured one
..it looked brand new to me and I was told by the Holden Manager it was brand new

hth

As discussed before .. I doubt the engine was brand new .. most are "GEM" remanufactured engines. What are the first four letters/numbers of your engine? My "exchange" engine was VF01 meaning it was an 2001 cast block. My "original" engine was VF03 meaning 2003 casting ..

Put my VY1 SV8 into dealers today for "Slap assessment", so will possibly be in similar situation soon... Doesn't use oil, just a tad noisy

-Told in the past : Thats fairly normal!!! (Using new dealer, picked up noise at 60000 service)

My question (after reading this thread & a few others) is if "the slap" is found to be culprit, am i better off pushin for repairs to my engine or replacement.

May not have an option, figuring on 60 thou +km at moment , would just like to be a little prepared when i go pick it up in morning..

Anything else a relative noob should ask dealer in this situation...

Sorry, not stealin thread. Just seems to be some real knowledge in this thread ....

luck of the draw mate. Zupps at Aspley in Brisbane did a 100% perfect job on mine. Look for my earlier post and read about it.

I was told by mark at Power Torque [Forum Sponsor] that Holden had tightened right up in respect to noisy motors [piston slap/gudgeon rattle] and that the best way to approach a replacement would be on the basis of oil consumption. Holden told me that two litres and under per 10klms is considered normal. I am on the back end of an oil consumption test now. It uses about 2 litres per 10K as well as having gudgeon rattle.

1500K's on from my rebuild, it has the slap noise back and still using oil (half way to add already), I also think it has lost power too so I don't dare put the supercharger back on. Dealer thinks I'm just a whinger now and isn't too intrested in looking at i anymore, I'm considering just giving up and living with it, there whole rebuild process is so painfull I don't think I could go through it again.
Also they replaced my 03 engine with a 02:mad:   :bash:

I've now done 60,000km in my VY and the noise it makes on start up is horrible. Doesn't even sound like a V8. In saying that I have spoken to both a holden service person and a very good performance mechanic in Perth who have all said that the noice is "normal" for these motors and that most of the problems were with the previous model. In saying that i have had no oil usage issues and the car has not missed a beat in 60,000 kms so I just put up with the noise.

Got my baby back from dealers. Pretty normal they say, so i'm happy.

Doesn't use oil & i really only notice the slight noise coz i know it's there.

Pat on the back to the dealer though, they noticed at last service an wanted to check just to be sure. Think i'll stay with these guys, at service they replaced some bushes in the front that i hadn't even noticed were below par....

Sometimes ya just get lucky..(Touch wood, eh)
