I have to remove a LS1 & Auto trans from a car this week so we can replace a chassis rail! :(

i have never removed a holden engine before and some people i have spoken to say it is a major!
But others say apparently i can remove the entire subframe and it is a fairly easy and quick job.. even without a hoist

Can anyone confirm or deny :)

can anyone with experience give me any advise... or step by step instructions! haha :bash:

Thanks in advance :>
Cheers

Removing the entire sub frame [K Frame] complete with engine, front suspension & tranny is definately the way to go BUT you will need a hoist.

This picture is a Holden 5L done this way but the same applies to the GEN III. Ignore the comments on the picture - they were to illustrate something else.

Four bolts on the K frame to the rails, four bolts for the rear gearbox mount, two nuts for the top of the struts, and two bolts for each of the front calipers. Also have to remove front sway bar links, steering shaft to rack connection and of course all the fuel, coolant, exhaust and tranny cooling connections and drop the tailshaft.

The biggest issue is undoing all the wiring!!!

Undo all the stuff you have to or can do from the top, put the car up on a hoist, lower it slowly until the engine sits on a suitable platform [a red steel bench with wheels shown above] then undo all the bits below and lift the car off the engine with the hoist.

Reverse the procedure to put it all back together.

Looks like to the way to go,

However you are going to need a hoist as without it I think
it would be dangerous not only to yourself or damage......
Maybe x3 large padded garage jacks would do it but you would need a lot of syncronised people - Anyone done this ?

When assembling you are going to need a couple of mates to line the struts up when asemblying.

PS.
Make sure you strap/tie down car to hoist, when removing that much weight
from a car at one end could result in a shift in balance on the hoist.
Better to safe than watch the car flip of the hoist.

i think if u lined up the car on the hoist correctly so it still balances with it in and with it out.
ive seen camrys have the gearbox dropped and engine dropped out. the car didnt move on the hoist.

but yeah if ur not sure tie it down
