Hi all. Just wondering what the dreaded slap sounds like?
Mine doesn't use hardly any oil between services - but when starting cold I am getting a slight ticking sound (not disimilar to tappet tick in old style GH blocks). It goes away fairly quickly once the oil gets running round.
Should I book it in for a cold start test or is this normal?
Does the dreaded gudgeon/piston problem generally show its head by oil consumption?
cheers in advance...
hollow sound, a bit like a diesel idling, but quieter. Mine is noisy as when cold but doesnt use any oil. i will live with it.

Yah - I reckon the sounds on that site are the REAL bad ones - they do sound like a diesel when piston is loose enough in the bore.
Even mine (late Yseries 2) has had piston slap once or twice on start from cold, but 30 seconds of warm up and it's gone. But others have had VY's that needed a rebuild though it seems no where near as many as the earlier series.
If your slapper slaps all day hot/cold then you have a problem.

Mine has a groaning sound when taking off. It happens hot and cold but mainly cold. I took it back to holden and they said it was the engine cover not on tight enough ( yer right ) however it seamed go away for a day of two. It is a 6 speed. Does this sound familiar?

The ABS brakes do a self test when you first drive off.....it sounds like a sort of low groan type of noise, they all do that, start the car in the driveway and as soon as you touch the accelerator you will hear it self test, only does it once, until the next time you restart the car.

Geez! Thanks for that too Drewie. My SV8 does that too and I thought it was something with the throttle cable sticking or something???!!
