Hey all,
Just wanted know about vehicle weight and how it's used in conjunction with vic roads (and other road authorities).
My VT Clubsport's rego sticker says TARE : 1450 but then I look in the car manual and it's says the car has a kerb weight of 1719 kg, is tare the kerb weight?
Also if police use 1450 as the weight (which has happened to a mate of mine) then I can't drive the clubby on P's. I've been pulled over a few times now and each time they asked why I'm driving a powerful car on P's but when I say the power to weight is fine they let me off, so inlight of this I desided jot down the formula (Correct if I'm wrong please).
Vic roads state that a p plater can't have more than 125 kw per tonne (and also 3.5 lt per tonne); so 1000/ 125 = 8, so then all you need to do is: kerb weight / 8 = allowed kW.
In my case it equals 214.8 kW allowed and my clubby is only 195 kW (Series 1 5.0 litre)
Sorry for the long post just wanted to get some feed back about the formula and kerb vs tare.
Cheers

I believe kerb weight is the cars weight with fluids (oil/water/fuel) and tare is without.

Vic Roads often publicate an updated list of vehicles which are prohibited to P plate drivers. This is what most police use to guide as to wether the car is being driven illegally.
Not sure if its available to the public. Ive never checked, but I would imagine so.

Yeh TARE (dry) weight is the one you have to go by. Same deal goes with engine conversions in which the TARE weight of the vehicle is needed to determine maximum allowable engine capacity. Alot of people seem to think you can use the kerb weight but this is not true.

Could you please elaborate, my car has the same power as a vt ss series 1; 195 kW, the fact that it's a clubsport has nothing to do with it. And I've been pulled over a fair few times now because they think it's series 2 which has 250 kW LS1 but when the the 5.0 litre it's all good.
Thanks for the feedback

My son had a 5 lt VN SS 165kw a few years back and we used the formula on the Vic Roads web site and that was ok on one of the equations but was touch and go on the other one, can't remember if it was the power to weight or capacity to weight, it was probably over on one of them, I know the VT is heavier but I think a 185 or 195kw 5 litre would still be restricted, they have changed the list recently and don't list all the resricted vehicles but I seem to recall seeing the 5lt vehicles on the list. The other thing to consider also is insurance, if you have a bingle and the accessor works out you should not have been driving what may be a restricted vehicle you may find your insurance worthless, just a thought, I would do my home work and make sure where you stand.

You can have 125KW's Per tonne, or I think it's 4.0Litres per tonne. You will find models like VR Clubsports etc can sometimes pass. However there is a list of banned cars outside of the power/weight calculation and if the model car is on that you can't drive it. The vicroads list is on the vicroads website. Also if you need to drive a certain car for work reasons you can apply to be excluded from the rule. Eg: you might be a mechanic, car salesman, or your might need to drive a company vehicle that would normally be excluded.

The penalty notice for driving a high powered car doesn't attract demerit points in Vic. So unless you get caught time and time again and finally get a summons then you wont be losing your licence.
