I'd say VZ, its not hard to put 40,000 kms on a HWY patrol car. At the rate of about 500km (conservative) a day is less than 3 months turn around.

I'm not 100% sure on this but, was told that general public can't go to the auction unless your a car dealer or have a dealers permit or something?
Again i'm not sure if the source of the info was correct or misleading.:)

NSW keep their Commodores for 60,000km now. Used to be 40k. Anyone can go to a car auction, although there is like one day of the week which are for dealers only. You usually pay an admin fee of about $120 to officially bid, otherwise you're just tyre-kickin'. The auction house that had the contract (as far back as I can remember) was originally Pickles, then it was Autogroup at Enfield, but now it's Fowles at Moorebank. Family members have bought a couple from Pickles, a few from Autogroup and the latest one from Fowles.

not all at 60k
i`ve seen some at 75k,85k and one at 97000km, it just depends on th area it comes from

yea i guess they'll go higher if they are use more in densly populated areas, but in those small one-horse towns they would probably have a min 60k. i have seen ones with higher km's. finding one from a country town is your best bet.

A friend of mine is a highway patrol office and we were only talk about this very topic the other day.
The cars are leased based on a time period rather than a klm period. Thats why you see cars with a wide range of klicks. I can't remember for sure but I think they are a 6 or 9 month lease. He told me they just sent back a XR8 with 17,000 k's on it. One of the guys that drive it had been on extended leave which only left one other bloke to drive it i.e. it was only driven for one shift per day instead of 2.
He said some blokes prefer a particular type of car and if it's spare then they will use it instead of their allocated vehicle.
Many country cars are also used as heavy or wide load escort vehicles. If there is a wide load at the Victorian border a car can travel from 100's of k's just to meet it, then escort it to the Queensland border before returning back to it's normal station.

Off topic but apparently due to cost cutting they run all their cars on normal cats pi$$ unleaded

Hope this helps :)

probably is. there are fixed prices so you can buy the car without bidding, u just buy it off the floor. if it goes to auction you could get it a bit cheaper, but you risk losing the car to someone else. the thing is, after you buy a car (fixed price) you can sell it a year later for the same price lol.

Kinda. A car with low kms would be rotated to an area where it will get it to 70-80,000 within about a year. In theory.

Check out http://www.fowles.com.au/auctions/auction.aspx?auction=SGP138 for tomorrow's (Tuesday) auction. Only 1 SS, http://www.fowles.com.au/auctions/auction.aspx?auction=SGP138 VYII, Silver, not ex-HWP, has leather interior. As ssvyredute said, Fowles are the auctioneers for NSW Police and (some?) other Gov depts.

The fixed prices are generally about 20% higher than what they sell for on auction day. Although they occaisionally sell for more if they are highly desireable and punters think they might get a bargain. They end up getting all excited and bidding higher than they anticipated. Best bet is go to a couple just to watch and learn. I bought a AU series 3 Futura with 6000Kms and 6 months old for 22K fixed price was 28500. The V8's tend to attract the most attention from bidders and as previously posted you could miss out on the car you want. But be patient and set your budget. You'll eventually end up with 'your' car.
A guy I met at Belangalo a couple of years back from Mittagong HP (Long story involving a tibia - appeared on a enduro track that I used to ride every week) told me they serviced them every 5000Km's - if this is true then they would be or should be a better bet than your average Company or Repo'd SS.

Good Luck.

Highway cars would have to be the best kept cars of the whole cop fleet, i mean, if you went out every day with a strong possibility of having to do some high speed driving, you'd keep your car in pretty bloody good condition :D GD cars seem to have the ass flogged out of them, so if possible id avoid them, but all in all they would have been serviced spot on the 10k mark and still be generally well kept, but HWY would be the pick of the crop.

What the difference between Highway patrols and General duties ? V8-V6 ?

Would those unmark police cars be a better option ? as those are usually used by detectives ?

In Darwin I guess we get the normal commodores as General duties and the XR6 non turbo as hightway patrol cars

Thanks for clearing up my info for trade buyer's etc, like I said I wasn't sure if the info was correct and it seem it wasn't 100%:)
My car is an ex HWY VXSS when I bought it 2½ years ago it had 69000km's and was used out at Bathurst on the highways around that area, only thing that has gone wrong with it was the diff which was replaced under warrenty. Other than that it has perform 100% and the cops even had an edit done on it too:D

My brother-in-law has a government lease SV6, he said when it gets to 30,000km to buy it from them for a payout figure of around $20,000. It's currently got 9,000km on it. They'll have 30,000km on it in no time!! I'm pretty tempted.

COMMODORE VZ SV6 03/2005 SEDAN 19,792 RED HOT 3.6L EI PETROL 6spd Manual $26,600

Well that's gonna stuff the resale price of my 2003 SV8 isn't it?? :(
If it's only worth a pittance as a trade, maybe I'll keep it as a weekend special and buy a buzz box for week day duties? I'm beginning to suspect that owning a car that's similar to what the cops auction off for very litlle is a good way to ensure poopy resale values.

An ex cop told me that there's a tendency for 'petrol head' cops to seek out work in HWY Patrol cars so I wouldn't rule out an ex cop SS copping somewhat of a caning. If you got to drive somebody else's SS and you could justify speeds in excess of the speed limit, how would you drive the car?

If you save $5,000 or more, who cares? That's enough for a high quality engine rebuild anyway? Or 2/3rd's of the cost of a stroker engine (and that's only if the one you've got lets go . . . and it's outside of warranty).

The biggest pain is that most are white and auto so they stand out as ex cop cars. That may be a small price to pay. At least you don't have to worry about paint fade or bent pressure plate fingers.

It's not all bad news...low resales can also work in your favour :) ....my current week day under 5K buzz box being an 01 Mercury Silver *SR* Pac from the dark side..yep a falcon...complete with factory wing / Alloys and other assorted goodies...cold air and a rattle free drive ensures it will do just fine till the rego finally runs out and the lrc can stay parked in the shade over these hot summer months.......all good imho

I think i might go back down the V8 route rather than SV6, after looking at some of the prices you can pick up an ex cop SS, it's hard to resist. My only problem is i'm right up in NQ which can make it hard for me to inspect & purchase a vehicle via an auction house. Especially if i get down there & the vehicles aren't in good condition or i don't win the auction!! I'm in a bit of a fix here!! :(

Giys, if you live in Melbourne, check out the Fowles Auctions for X Cop cars. I bought 1 there 3 weeks ago, white, 34K, Build 11/05, immaculate for $25800. I must admit, I was there for 2 months every Wednesday waiting for something good to come up. In the end, I got one, full service history with all books. Car was from the country. Got on the road on June this year. Did 4000km, July, did 10K, August did 10K and September did 10K total of 34K. If you need more info, check out fowles.com.au under government vehicles...Cheers:yup: :yup:
