It makes you wonder what it was he swerved to miss, and would it have been better (at the time) to just hit what was in the road (unless it was a kid, swerving isnt a good idea)

thats only about a 45 - 50km/h impact speed - they crumple well

The silver monaro pictures were from a stolen car joyride - i thin kthe car was new at a dealers with the keys in it - joyriders = dead.

The pics were taken by "spooky" (or at least were on his site) who is a HWP cop in NSW. The joyrider was a 16yo youth whose ability was found lacking at speeds in excess of 100km/h (IIRC it was 160km/h he lost it)
The pics from the scene had the engine many metres away from the main body of the monaro which was having a close personal moment with a tree. The point was made that the police cars involved in the pursuit were undamaged in any way..

When ApeXi's senator was stolen, and consequintly damaged, it probably became part of a police investigation and until this is completed they will not release the car to be repaired. This happened to my son a couple of years ago when his ute was stolen and smashed into a power pole. Took the police ten weeks to complete their investigation and release the vehicle

talk to any HWP officer and they'll say what I'm about to say

This is what they need to show P platers, even learners. What happens when something goes wrong at high speeds, like the Monaro, it might make a difference.

And some of these like the Monaro are cars with up to date safety devices, but honestly, when they meet a tree side on at 110kph the air bag aint gonna do much for your life.

One HWP officer i spoke too a few years back said all it would take is to keep a collection of these cars to let "the hoons see what he sees at an accident" before they get behind the wheel. You dont write a car off at 50Kph.

Scare tactics, but it'd work ... thats real life, no reset button like the Xbox

i disagree. I've seen so many car crash pictures on the web and in the news that i've become desensitized to it all.

not saying that i drive like a tool, but that the intended effect isnt' there.

I disagree with your disagreement

Should be more of these displayed, most 16 year olds get into a car without seeing what can hapen as a worst case scenario. Let alone the poor emergency services who have to pull the injured and deceased out of the tangled mess's. It has gone through my mind at times whilst driving what can happen.

Some sort of this is already in effect - I finished year 12 in 04, but there were people from headstart (I think people who were damaged in accidents, who had to relearn everything etc) came to talk to us, showed pics of their accidents etc. You got to ask questions etc but its not really much use - The average 17 year old thinks they are invincible behind the wheel and wouldnt have an accident. Its the same as trying to tell kids that smokings bad, its still 'cool' and they are still going to do it.

Maybe it would have an affect on the really young, but then your risking all sorts of damage psycologically or whatever.

vh-holden, I take your point about being de-sensitised, but have you actually been unfortunate enough to have been involved in, or come across a big hit, serious collision.

It is NOT a pretty sight and truthfully, the ads/net don't even come close.

There are the sights, the smells, the people, the tangled/mangled messes, the noise, sometimes the lack of noise, the absolute feeling that humans are fallible, the list goes on.

Nothing, I mean Nothing will prepare you for a situation such as this.

To be truthful, I've seen more than a few and I still haven't become entirely used to it. Speak to road rescue, the firies, the ambos, the coppers. They see a fair share and get the job of cleaning it up done, but they NEVER forget.

All we can do as responsible car enthusiasts, is to act in as safe a manner as possible whenever we drive. AND, try to avoid the fools.

In relation to the education side, anything that may save the life of ONE person is absolutely worth it, in my opinion.

Macca

Amen!! I attended another one this morning. A head on between two vehicles in a 90km/h zone. If you see the things emergency personnel do there's no way you'd become desensitized. Tough way to see what can really happen to cars and human bodies!

Or sit them at the communications center. I used to do it as a volunteer for the NSW RFS and on quiet winter mornings youd find yourself recieving the call via the phone, then activating the required brigade. It all goes through NSWFB 000 call center and one of their operators then call us if its in our area with the details, even that call is enough to make you sick and thats a calm, trained operator just informing you of a persons trapped accident... youve then got to act on it and hear the whole thing play out.

You never forget the shakiness of the voice of the firiey at the other end as he jumps out of the truck and announces the true situation as they approach the car... you then call to cease any radio transmissions due to a fatality and it then all happens via phone (which obviously you then hear more in depth detail)

It hits you hard and your not even there :hide: You hear how the cars sitting, how bad the passengers are injured. You talk to that bloke who gave you the radio call and realise how hard it hit him too.

Or some smash repairers are a good place to see the aftermath. One of the repairers near work had a VT just before Christmas with a beautifully cracked windscreen just above the steering wheel. You could see the sun reflecting off the blood around the crack. Turns out the air bag didnt activate in the crash and it was a fairly hard crash. You work the rest out. Apparently the guys still in hospital with fairly bad head and neck damage, after I saw the car I'm surprised hes still got a head and neck in all honesty, thats the only way to describe it.

I'd hate to acctually be at one :kapow:
