Hello boys and girls! It's been a long time since I've posted on here, but I've got a question you may be able to help me with.

What are the legalities on a carbon-fibre bonnet? I've got a VZ SS ute that I want to put a VZ Monaro bonnet on, and I have access to a wet-lay carbon-fibre person who can make me one. My old man is a fibreglasser, so he is going to take a mould from my mate's VZ Monaro bonnet (he's got some fancy way of doing it so as not to damage his paintwork), and I can get the bonnet made from carbon fibre for a very minimal price. I also want to make the bonnet myself as it may possibly need it's own 'bulge' in a certain area if I install what I'm hoping to install in the near future...it makes the car go 'weeeeeee' by pushing a lot more air into him!

I heard they may possibly be illegal due to the fact that they can splinter in an accident, but I'm not sure on this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Basically if it don't conform to ADR it's illegal :D

Illegal, because it will splinter and send parts flying off everywhere same as fibreglass, all bonnets need to be metal to be legal

Have a look at ADR 42.

Unroadworthy

Carbon Fibre Bonnets are much stiffer than metal or alloy bonnets and thus will not bend in an accident. You may be unfortunate enough that in a crash the bonnet will slide straight through the windscreen and act like a guillotine.

Looks like I'll stick to carbon-fibre skidplates! :)

Hi,

Even an old 1977 torana has pre-formed bends under the bonnet so that it will fold in half in a head on crash.
A carbon fibre bonnet will be strong...... but too strong.

Cheers.
