Hi Guys,
i want to start looking for a new car soon :)
i have been thinking about either buying a vx II or a vy I SS
however if i get the vx with the money i'm saving would like to get
induction (mcai)
3' maf
cat back
and edit
rims and lowering
permitting the funds are there. What would you guys prefer or think?
a slightly modded vx II or bog stock vy1
Thanks guys :D

What do you want?!

Depends on which shape you prefer for a start.
But the VY will hold it's value better than the VX due to it's common interior and shape to the VZ.
The VY already comes stock with the MCAI as well as 18" rims. The 3" MAF you wanted is a waste of money.
In my eyes you'd be better off with the VY and save up some money for the catback and edit a little later.

Thanks,
I didn't know vy's came with the mcai as standard.
Are there any major hardware differences? or is it all cosmetic?

I believe the VY1 comes with teflon coated pistons and tighter rings to minimise issues with piston slap

Spend the extra and get the VY if you can mate... It's personal choice really but for the reasons XLR8 V8 pointed out the VY is the better car in my eyes...

Whilst I personally prefer the VX shape, there is no doubting that the VY would be as good, if not a better buy, AND, it is newer.
Good luck with your choice, either way you won't regret a step into the world of LS1.

I went shopping for a VX SS, but ended up getting a VY SS.
As mentioned previously, the VY comes with 18's (and good looking ones at that). It also has a bit more power, a much better stereo and dash and a sharper body kit (less dated IMHO).
Its like any used purchase, it comes down to finding the best example you can afford.
I'd stretch and get the newer car (in fact I did :) ), you can always save a bit more later on to do the mods you want.

Personally id go for the VX, i think the money you would save from the difference could be spent on mods which would give you a smile from ear to ear

I've just had the same choice, went VY over VXII, newer interior, styling, and there are always lots of little things that are improved from model to model. Can always save more money and do mods later on, but can't upgrade model as easily.

im not a huge fan of the square bums. I prefer the VX with a load of 'right now' mods BUT the VY will have better re-sale value etc etc. Depends if the car is gonna be a keeper or anything like that.
I'd go for a VY SII because I think it has the Gen III engine with the conrods that have the stronger gudeons that overcome the piston slap and oil burning problem. That would be a BIG point for me.
How do you think I feel? I've got the VY SI (just before the new rods were fitted).

A VTII HSV might be worth a look.

I went for a VX S1. No other reason other than I preferred the shape. The VX is more curvy than the VY & VZ. Of course, this is only my humble opinion.
Troy.
If I could've stretched the budget to get a VY,I would've,could only afford a VXII but am very happy with the car

As biased as it may be (re: my ride) I think the shape of the VT/VX is great. You can't beat the smooth flowing lines as opposed to the up-in-the-air ar$e end of the VY onwards.

No need for the flame suit, everybody has the right to their own opinion (even when the are so obviously wrong.... only kidding!)
I do like the VY a lot (which is a good thing since I have to look at it every day), but do also think the earlier models look good - in fact, the VT SS is still a very nice looking car (and the VTII Clubsport is a favourite of mine which I would have bought if the right car had presented itself).
In contrast, I'm not all that sold on the VZ. The grill/bumper combo is a bit, um, clumsy and while the 'gills' are a great idea, like the Monaro 'nostrils', they would be easier to accept if they had some actual function rather than aesthetic (maybe I need a flame suit? :( ). However, these things can grow on you over time. I wasn't a fan of the VY when it first came out either (desperately trying to appease angry VZ'ers  ).

I like the shape of both the VX and VY equally. I was originally looking for a VX SS due to not being able to find a VY SS in my price range at the time ($27000), but came away happy with a VX Clubby.
As with all car purchases check into the history of the vehicle: Such as has it had problems with burning oil, if so has the engine been rebuilt. has the clutch been replaced etc.
Have you considered buying a VY with mods already done? I'm sure there would be some good well kept examples out there and they would be cheaper or similar in price than a stock one? Just an idea.

I brought both cars brand new and sold them with both having 25k on the clock, as all the guys have said the vy will have better resale and has a few
nicer points to it, but I have to say that the series 2 vx was a better car
overall and thats not taking anything away from the vy.
good luck Leethl

Since it is the new year, your budget might just be able to stretch to a VYII. Make sure you check out the websites such as Carsales and Carpoint as well as visiting car yards.
Good luck!!!

Or you could wait till the VE comes out and then the VY will drop even more... Plus the more fuel prices go up the more V8's should drop as demand goes down...
I went for a VX SS and maybe a VY but came away with a VT-II SS as for some reason im a fan of the older shape and i love the back of the VT's as they have the wrap around lights/garnish... I think the VTs look a bit meaner then the VX.. Only thing that is bugging me about the VT is the transmission...
Personally what else made me go for the VT is that the stereos are so much easier to fit then in the VY.... cause I personally dont mod the car that much... I just spend my money on the stereo and the VT is easier to do this in...

hi guys,
thanks for all your valuable input, i am probably going to wait another month or 2. With the release of the new 6 litre, i think we will see the price of an ls1 drop even more. Does anyone know when it will be offically released in the media and to the public?
I don't think i can wait till VE as i've waited nearly a year already.
I have already had a vt ss but it was only a 5 litre.
I have been checking carsales a fair bit (dealer search) and most mint vx's are still hovering around the 27/28k mark and a vy I/II around 33/35K.
I have also checked the trading post and the same cars are about 2k cheaper.
Can anyone please confirm, I have heard the VXII pistons were upgraded from the VX I. If they are upgraded is it a significant difference? also is there much difference between the upgrade from VXII to VYI? :)

I have/prefer the VX SS...I like the more 'rounded' look, besides, the resale value of the VY SS wont be that much better in 2-3 years time either when the VE series 2 hits the streets......

If you need to know average prices you can also check http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/index.php?make=HOLD&family=PSCOMMODO If you need to know the rough values... just pick the year and make...
Dont know if it is all that right though... It is trying to tell me the national average price for a VT-II SS 5.7 is between $12,900 - $15,700  if this is right then I got a bit ripped off with mine :p

Anyone know what Insurance companies use?? My VT-SS was insured for market value of $26,000 but according to Redbook they are only $15,700 max... seems the Insurance was over and Redbook is under...

There seems to be a big difference in prices between 'Redbook' and the 'Glass's Guide' which is on the carpoint site.
Glass's list the following price guide for your VTII which you have given the Redbook prices for above.
VTII SS 2000 Model - Private sale: $16,400 to $20,000 - Dealer $23,100.
One publication seems too low the other maybe a tad high.

Glasses sounds more realistic... $20,000 on the road was the price of my VT at a dealer which is in the range above... I think i'll start believing the Glasses guide from now on... screw Redbook...

I am pretty happy with my VX SS apart from having the updated VYII pistons fitted which was debatable whether it did need doing or not, the only warranty claim I ever had was for a new seat base which used to click as you moved around, it has been fantastic no problems at all.

just a quick question
how do you think a VX will go with the following mods
mcai (2 hole)
3' maf
maf tune (edit)
2.5' cat back exhaust?
what sorta RWKW/FWKW will it make?
will i need to run a bigger trans cooler to keep the auto going harder for longer?

The price Holden have on a car and the price it is actually worth are different stories.
A mate of mine about 3 months ago bought a VY SS ex chaser with 60,000kms for $23k, the car is spotless and runs like a dream. Now I know this is a ex cop car but if you stick it out long enough I'm sure you will find a VY in your budget, which IMHO is a much nicer car both inside and out then the VX.
At the end of the day just look for the best car that falls within your budget, as long as it's LS1 powered ofcourse. :nyuk:

im a bit unsure wether the maf pipes are worth the extra $$. But that sounds like a good combo if you want a maf tune. You could always go further and go the full headers and zorst. But as for peak dyno figures it would vary wether you have auto or manual. Either way i would be more focused on your torque than peak dyno figures.

I agree with what you have said, however i have a few mates at Holden that should be able to get the parts for me pretty cheap so I'm not too concerned about the $$. Car is going to be an auto. Due to the purchase of a new home the mod funds are very limited, thats why i'm only going for the basics. dyno figures don't mean that much to me, personally i wanna be able to feel the difference on the road. torque = driveability :D
SS_Fury
05-01-2006, 12:22 PM
autos will give a lower dyno figure but that doesnt mean they are easy beats by manuals. Auto's are generally quicker over the 1/4 mile....but anyway at guess i would say 210rwkw. And the auto box will hold up fine. Going over 300+fwkw then a cooler may be a good idea, but until then i wouldnt worry.

I was just started to worry about "Piston Slap" with my new toy (VY-SS II) although, the engine is very quiet (knock wood) on cold or hot start.
Now I'm glad that I missed VY-SS I ;)
Anyway, I'm a newbie to the forum, so be nice to me :)

I was faced with the same decision only 6 weeks ago.. had a look at a fair few VX SS's and some VY SS's.. most of the VX SS's i had a look at at dealers were like $25k - $29k.. and the interior i felt was feeling a bit old to me over the new styling of the VY interior which felt damn sweet!..
Ended up going for a Silver VY SS S1 6 spd and got it for $28500.. which was pretty good imo.. and in near mint condition..
I know few guys with VX SS's ans they look mad with the right rims and leather interiors!.. but myself im partial to the VY SS's just got a meaner look in my eye's and just like how everything looks in and on them! and the extra bonnus of 18 inch rims as stated above.. and updated engines..
As ive heard most of the VY LS1'a are running the LS6 block.. which is sposed to breathe 87% better internally (crankcase area)..

Now that Holden have offically released the 6.0 i think its only a matter of time before it drastically reduces the price of a GEN III. Which is always good for buyers but not so good for people trying to sell.

Depends how good the 6lt is, if it is a slug the GenIII might be more sort after.
