Hey guys.. I've been considering doing a security course, just to do a secondary job in the evenings. I heard that doing security in front of a nightclub is good and pays well ($25 p/h+), but I'd like some of your opinions as well. Basically I'd like to know what company you would recommend to do the courses with, hopefully they have weekend classes, what job positions and self defence training they offer? I wouldnt even mind working at places like Crown Casino or as such. The fees I suppose I can find out after when I call the companies, but that is not really important. Any other recommendations you ming have are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers... :D

I do it part time on Sat nights and sometimes Fri nights. The problem is that it costs a few dollars to do your Security Course and the First Aid which has to be updated every 3 years. Then you have to pay for your lic which is renewable every 3 years $ 170, I think. If you sign up for the Commonwealth Games, they will train you for Cert III in Security. I'm thinking of signing up because I have to update my lic to Cert III, and I don't want to pay $300 for something that I already know
Working at the Crown can be dangerous. Most companies get you working in pubs to look after their Pokie rooms. Also, the guys that you work along side of you have to be responsible as well, because that might get you into trouble. Most Security Companies are dodgy.

Really depends, there are heaps of Security jobs out there. If you want it easy, you are competing amongst many who want that job, and therefore that employer will give you less. But doing nightshift at $16 sounds like a dodgy Security Company. Maybe they were employing someone without a Security Lic.

Sounds like a good idea mate, and I've checked out the Comm. Games (https://volunteers.melbourne2006.com.au/Default.aspx) web site and found this "Applications to become a volunteer for the Games closed in early 2005. Once again, we would like to thank all those who expressed interest in becoming a Games volunteer and for their willingness to contribute their time and energy to ensure the success of this magnificent event." So unfortunatedly thats not an option any more, but it doesnt really matter. I have been told that it will cost between $700 and $800 for the course, which includes your first aid training, and then about $250 a year for the licence. Where abouts are you working now? Are pubs and bars any good? I suppose they can get a bit boring, but i'm sure not as boring as over night car parks. :p

I did security work many years ago so not sure about fees etc.
I dont think they actually train you in self defence and you would be wise to start some gym work and maybe martial arts.
A few basic movements will get you out of trouble.
I found though that 95% of the time your mind is your best weapon and treat people with respect and a joke here and there. You will find that most of the time there wont be any need for physical action.
Good to know a few pressure points on the body for the other 5% of the time.
Always be prepared for the worst and remember if you stay sober and be friendly you are one up on them.

Yes, you are 100% right. If you treat people with respect, they will do the same. You do have a joke with them and try to give them a go. When the majority of patrons see that, they remember that, and they come back. Most people want to go out without having any dramas, and when they know that they themselves have had too many, they know that they will be given all the best treatment to leave in a peaceful way. That means calling them a cab, or asking one of their friends to get them home safely.
And due to licenseing, you have to be .00....no alchol. Infact, I have been breath tested on on occasion !

Hi Padina,
personally i wouldn't recommend security work unless you have some martial arts training, you need to be confident enough to handle some pretty ugly situations & diciplined enough to only use force as a last resort. You need to be an excellent communicator to avoid making situations worse & remember, there's always someone better & most of the time you have no idea what your up against. Just my opinion based on experience.
Cheers,
Steve.

Just remember, it is only good for a bit of pocket money ( I work with some funny guys and gets me out of the house ). That's why I do it. But to make it a career of, forget it. Give me a pm when your ready, and I'll put you onto someone if you like.

Basically you need to be able to talk your way out of, and defuse any situation. Failing that, you need to have the confidence in yourself to hold your own against any attackers, and/or subdue any assailants.
Become a cop, it's easier :D

MOST companys will put the new bloke in a shit hole so make sure you can look after yourself before you go there.

Totally agree, and also they give you a gun when your a cop. It's not easy, especially when people are drunk.

Absolutely right. When I first started when I was 19, they put me at the Village Green Hotel. This was before the nice new renovations, it was like a war zone. They also will send you to the other side of the city, depending where you live.
