For the first time today I saw the police using their radar detectors from an foot bridge overpass on the freeway. They were in plain clothes and also were taking down the registration plates of certain cars as they went passed. (presumably the ones doing over the limit) They also had portable radios to another car on the freeway to communicate with for pulling over people that were driving too fast!
My question is for the forum members who are part of the force or people who have an interest in this area; were those people who's number plates were taken down going to receive a fine as I was informed some years ago that they had to be at a police car?
Just that I'm curious to know if they can so we can all be alert of another potential speeding fine method!

I think what they do is clock the speed, communicate the numberplate to another cop whose waiting half a km or so up the road and that cop books them instantly.

Saw the police doing this type of thing on the Pacific Highway, near Nerang, Qld. It was at about 1am in the morning and I saw a motor bike cop laying across his bike, in the shadow of a shrub, pointing the handheld radar up the road. Half a kilometre past and there was the HWP car waiting to pull you over if you were detected speeding  It was a couple of years ago so I don't know if they still do it, probably just park a camera there now. Wasn't speeding so no harm done , but pretty sneeky though.

They did this on the Monash Freeway in Melbourne too... I was driving into Melbourne... and there was a cop on the top of a bridge.. (he was hard to see) and then next thing i go over the hill and see a bunch of cops cars on the side of the road pulling people over...
The cop on the bridge was taking the speeds... He was then radioing the cars and speeds to the cop cars ahead who would then catch those cars...

And these are the tickets you take to court... It requires both the officer taking the speed reading and the officer that writes the ticket to attend court, and then comes the fun. how did cop 1 describe the speeding vehicle to cop 2, were there any similar cars in the area. Did cop 1 keep visual contact with the speeding vehicle until cop 2 pulled it over to determine that the correct vehicle was pulled over. etc etc....

It is very sneeky indeed. The thing is when I walked over the foot bridge to see the set up they had going they had a notebook with a few columns on it...had a full page full of number plates!!! Interesting to see what will happen to those people on that list...

I struggle to see the plate a couple cars ahead... let alone from a bridge... god they must have good eye site... What if the plate was like mine which is.. "M1CKS" and they mistake it for "MICKS"????

Did they also have descriptions of the cars, ie colour, make, maodel etc...
In a situation where they are booking a reasonable number of people, they don't have time to write lots of info, and any doubt you can put on their evidence can help have the case thrown out...

Whilst this is partially true, it wouldnt need to be a concern if you werent speeding!!!!!
:D Its a lot easier to slow down than try to weasel your way out of a speeding fine in court. Cheaper too.

Good point HRT 8, the amount of travel time saved by doing 10 or 15 kph over the limit isn't worth the hassle of getting caught.
Interesting avatar, is that a new variety of tomato?
Cheers,
Steve.

Didn't have that much of a look but only saw the number plates in one column.
