View Full Version : LS2 versus Tarago for fuel economy

Just did a trip away, took 2 cars too many kids.
Clubsport LS2 and a 92 Tarago.
Clubbie had 4 kids and a packed boot
Tarago had 2 1/2 kids and same sort of luggage
We hit the other side of Kempsey from Sydney, we filled both to the top in Sydney before we left, the Clubbie took 47 litres / Tarago 48.
We always filled at the same time since we took 2 cars everywhere and the LS2 always used less than the Tarago.
Now the Misses wants an LS2
So much for 4 cylinder economy :deal:
Poor Tarago kept getting left behind too

we got the LS2 down to 10.1/100km on the drive home from QLD, it never went over 10.4, mind you my old ladys alloytech i had down to 8.9/100 on a trip back from newcastle.

Tarago is crap on fuel period!
We went to Sydney in one and it was averaging about 15 litres per 100kms.
This was with 5 guys and luggage tho!

I tell people that I have a V8 and they freak out and say it must cost you a fortune to get it filled up..
I have learned to ignore these people.
They drive Ford Mondeo's which a 14+ ltr per 100km !!
gotta love 4cyl FWD

I just posted this breifly on another thread but.
Went to the Summernats in ACT, drove my Twin turbo 6.5 litre Monaro that makes an honest 900 hp. Got 11.7 ltr/100 kph on the way up (with road works and a 1 hour detour because of a fire) and got 10.4 on the way home with a straight run!!.
Drove from Canberra to Langwarrin (sth east Vic) on the same tank! :goodtime:

I'd say when a Clubby is loaded up and a Tarago is loaded up, the fuel economy of the Tarago would suffer more.
Therefore the results speak for themselves.
If the cars were not loaded, I dare say the result may have been more even.
Also, on the hwy a V8 sips fuel.
In city driving, I can't see the result would be as good.
Just my opinion.
Having said that, its mighty impressive economy for a 6 litre.
And a Tarago is an underpowered overweight car anyway.
Long live the V8's:driving:

Agree there, not a fair run, BUT......
V8's are still there, most say too expensive, now my misses wants one :nyuk:

stupid comparison and not surprising at all. I think Holden should make a Tarago/Voyager sixed luxury van with with RWD, 6 speed auto and a V8. Having said that, Taragos arent slow, i hired one (cos it was all they had left) and it accelerated and handled way above my expectations for it.

Drove from Canberra to Langwarrin (sth east Vic) on the same tank! :goodtime:
With my old ute (I had a VU S-pack V6 auto) I drove from Homebush stadium in Sydney after the X-Games to my driveway in Cranbourne, Victoria, using 61 litres of fuel (I filled up to the brim at Homebush, no extra clicks, then filled up in Cranbourne, no extra clicks). 899.3kms! Using cruise control at 110kph the whole way on a winters' night, and without slowing down through Albury and Wodonga.
My car barely went above 1600rpm the whole way, only used the throttle to get up to 40kph then used the cruise control stick to take me up to 110. I used to regularly roadtrip to Canberra from Cranbourne (which is about 40k's south of Melbourne for you people north of the border) on one tank of fuel, commute around Canberra for a couple days, then fill up at Yass on the way back.
14.74 kilometres per litre, 6.78l/100km. That ute was a freak though, my dad has exactly the same ute and he gets nowhere near the fuel economy that mine did. I miss that ute, I also did 113,000k's without needing brake pads, and they were still perfect when I sold the thing!
My VZ SS I get around 11l/100km, but on a roadtrip it will drop down to about 9l/100km. Even if my SS used 20 litres for a hundred kays, I still couldn't go back to a V6...

Funny shit, my Misses just read the thread....:box:
She said, "your motor over 3 times the size of mine and the Tarago is gutless and you still use less fuel and you leave me for dead"
What could I say

I too would like to see how the LS2-powered Tarago would go :)
I drove one around Rockhampton a few months ago (it's a long story) and while it had acceptable performance when you were taking it easy, if you pushed it a bit the performance didn't really improve. Reminded me of my fiancee's old 3 banger Charade, using more throttle only generated more noise.
Still, what I drive at the moment gets a handy 6-7L/100km on trips to Sydney, and given that I do 35,000km a year that's appreciated :)

I hired a 2005 tarago 7-seater last friday as the missus' relo's were down from QLD and we did the Great Ocean Rd in a day
Now the way down was on the inland hwy then came back along the coast, most of the trip is all cruising, not much stop/start. The donk it had was the VVT-I (or whatever it is) that is in the Camry's, and when we filled it up before we returned it the odometer was on 605km. It took 62Lt so it had 13Lt remaining, so I spose another 100km or so was left
Not bad for a 4cyl with over 2 tonne and 7 people inside, but my ute with luggage and fuel and 2 passengers would be the same weight, and did 740km to canberra before mods (only had zorst then) shows that a V8 gets excellent fuel economy on long trips
Maybe the family wagon could be a ute with canopy anbd seats along the sides like a troop carrier, that way you wouldnt hear the kids either..

It would be quite a sight to see a Tarago at the strip, might be a good match for that 350Chev plumbers van that does 11's, there is a video of it up at heathcote!
Also, on the hwy a V8 sips fuel. In city driving, I can't see the result would be as good.
I'm not so sure VX346,
I filled up my Gen III last Friday. It was sitting in the 12's (L / 100km's) around Sydney driving to the southern suburbs and back again (not freeway use either). It's just dropped into the 13 L / 100 km's range with a bit of short trip work. It sometimes drops to 15 L / 100 km's and lower than that with extended idling and 15 -20 stop / starts in a suburb.
It gives better economy than the Mazda V6 that the boss drives. We do the same sort of work.

I agree, cause that's what I can achieve as well.
Its only when you start driving in heavy traffic as you say, then fuel economy will suffer badly. I suppose that's what I was getting at.
Cheers.

micky I suspect you may be using more fuel as you are enjoying tromping on the throttle a little more than before :burnout:

Thats still not bad going for a 6 litre V8!! :)
My brother-in-law drove his SV6 from Townsville to Canberra just after xmas and averaged 7.4l/100km for the trip. Not bad either.

even if this started out with the tarago being better with fuel. who in their right mind would pick it over an LS2 lol

I'd better not let my fiancee read this thread, she wants lots of kids as it is!
On the other hand, if I could have a Clubby and she got a Tarago, I could live with it :)
