Hi.
This is my first post on this site. Been reading a fair bit and am hoping for a little assistance. I purchased an SS Induction big mouth cold air induction system for my VY SS today. I installed it as per instructions however I have found it appears to be hitting something which has caused it to lift slights thus causing the bonnet on the passenger side to be raised a few millimetres. Anyone else had a similar drama? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
I hate to say it but they aint called SS "Reductions" for nothing.

If you have purchased something from SS Reductions,
you probably haven't read enough. Yeah they rub
on the passenger side bonnet, but that is the least
of the problems, the power it will rob from you will
piss you off more :yup:
Do a search and have a bit of a read. I got ripped
off a couple of years ago with a couple of their
poor quality products, so I feel sorry for you.
All is not lost though, I saw one go for around
$180 on ebay recenently.

Hi,
Yeah I did a bit of reading and well it's pretty unanimous on here there shite!! I only pais $289 so am thinking about taking it back and saying its faulty to get a refund or credit note so I can purchase some engine covers to replace the silly turtle shell.... Can anyone suggest what it is about the design of this product that reduced the power to the engine? To the layman like myself you would assume the openings are bigger thus allowing more air in. Perhaps not. Any thoughts would ge good,.

There are a stack of threads on this product.
Here is a nearby one

The SSI CAI introduce more restriction into the intake than the stock system. This slows the air down and reduces how much air gets to the engine, hence less power. They make a nice noise though, thats about it for benifits.
Your choices are a monaro CAI at a cost of $25-30. These work very well. Do a search for 2 hole mod as well. The BEST option is a OTRCAI (Over the radiator Cold air induction). Powertorque in QLD or Marrano's in Sydney have these and they work very well on the road or racetrack.

Have had the SS Induction kit not long after I bought the car new back in 03.
Now I know there's a lot of negativity here about SSI but all I can say is, I'm pleased with the results I've got. Car DEFINITELY goes much better with the SSI CAI than the stock setup.
My next plan of attack will be OTRCAI, but til then, the SSI will stay put.

Have you had a look at the tiny restrictive hole above
where the SS cai joins to the airbox pipe Tron, makes
what you say very hard to believe imo. Shit, I went
from the restrictive 2 pipe setup found on VT/VX to
the SS CAI and the car still felt like it had gone
backwards.

The inflow of cold air from outside the engine bay is directed into the unit by the aluminium air scoop located at the front. I agree that the air channel is a tad restrictive looking but cold air is still being "rammed" into the airbox via two (2) holes and not (the standard) one (1) hole.
Obviously if there were more room beneath the closed bonnet, then the design of the unit could be larger which in turn would provide a much larger air channel into to the airbox. But for now, for me, it works well.
But what I have always had concerns with is all the twists and bends that the cold air has to go thru before it reaches the throttle body.
OTRCAI units solve that problem very nicely and is the main reason why I will go down this road very soon.

From the impact that the word "SS induction CAI" has on this site, says it all.
Should be covered by a current affair, today tonight or someone.
So people can stop being cought out getting one (only joking).

What is the point of having 2 holes when they are
trying to get air through that tiny little gap above
the LHS headlight? Bit like scolling beer through
a straw, doesn't work does it. You are happy though,
just like countless others that keep SS Inductions
in business I guess.

Hi,
I removed my ss induction system today, will be ringing American Autoparts tomorrow asking for a refund due to is not fitting correctly. As I said the bloody thing was so out of wack I couldn't close my bonnet correctly. I had to butcher a few things to try and close it and still didn't close all the way. I followed a guide I located on this site and modified my air box to the two hole version (not much choice really after having to cut a hole to fit the ssi system). I have absolutely no idea if the two hole mod has done anything for me. I can't hear bugger all over my 3.5 inch sureflo exhaust:) but the way I look at it, worst case scenario it is at least as good as it was standard and not restricted with the ssi as everyone seems to thing. Thanks everyone for your advice.
Cheers

I had that system fitted to my vy ss ute a few years ago and as I live on the goldy I went down to there factory at ashmore and had the owner of SSI fit it,not knowing much about CAI at the time I thought this was great until he started fitting it and realising later just how much I had been ripped off. When he went to fit the air flow metre he didn't have one in stock so they just knocked the mesh out and said bring it back later and when I've got time I will polish it for you,$400.Big mouth cai wouldn't fit under the bonnet properly so he twisted the bonnet so it would sit a bit better, nearly shit my pants at that moment as she was only 1200ks old,$440.Throttle body tube later started to crack at elbow $160.Engine covers didn't quite fit so he took to them with a hammer to bend the tags over so they sit a bit better $395 later with a grand total of $1395 later and a few years down the track knowing just how much I had been ripped off I would rather shoot myself in the nuts than go back to these jokers. On my vz maloo with the mcai I fitted myself and cost me a massive $24.95 and got the pleasure of doing it ,I know now what I would rather spend my money on.But I learned the hard way when you don't know much about these things when it's all new to you.SSI ha save ya money.

:teach: WARNING _ NEWSFLASH _ And Guess What!!!
SS Reductions / Seriously Shit Inductions are opening up a new showroom in a new industrial area next to the M1 motorway at Ormeau half way between Gold Coast and Brisbane - The sign at the front has up SS INDUCTIONS PERFORMANCE CENTRE - Professional motor vehicle specialists wanted in the adjoining factories. It is just two minutes down the road from my house.
When I get a picture of the sign and building being built I will post it up.

Howdy All,
I rang American Autos today and have a slight disagreement over the phone however I went down to their shop with the induction unit. They rang SSI directly and I spoke to the owner. He seemed like a half decent bloke. Anyways to cut a long story short they offered three solutions. One replace the system with an identical system (due to it not fitting correctly). Second they offered me the new growler system at the same price as the big mouth. I hummed and harred but took the third option which was a full refund. SO there we all go a happy ending from a major headache for me:) Thanks everyone for your advice.
Cheers

 Thread mining extraordinaire! It's over 2 years since this thread last saw the light of day.......
FWIW someone on here replaced their SS Reductions Groveller :jester: on their VE SS with a Chipmaster CAI and picked up power and torque.
