They both have an enormous amount of talent , Rossi gets my vote .
He went from the Honda that was a good bike to the Yamaha and still dominated the field .

I am probably biased (can't stomach that processional 4-wheel crap), but I think Valentino Rossi is a lot more popular in motoGP than MS is in F1, relatively speaking. I also think Rossi's dominance, personality and undoubted talent has brought MORE people to motoGP as opposed to the boring dominance of MS that I feel turned spectators AWAY from F1 (did me anyway).

As far as personalities go, Rossi will always be a suave but childish, flamboyant but ruthless, amuzing but determined character that you can't help liking/admiring. Whereas MS will always be an arrogant German :stick:

Both are champions in their chosen sport, dont forget Micheal went from championship winning team (Benetton) to the (at the time) lowly ferarri.

Agreed, they are both champions. It's hard to argue that, no matter how big a tosser you think either of them is. You have to amire both their achievements.

Did MS win in the Ferrari in his first year?

Won races not championship apart from Rossi is there any talent in Moto GP he must think its a joke? But then again he is so special

Yes, Rossi is special, but don't under-sell the competition. There's plenty of "hot and cold" talent in motoGP at the moment. The riders that can win one week when everything is perfect, but struggle to get a top 5 or 10 the next race (Capirossi, Biaggi, Barros - all close to retirement too). There's also some exceptional riders on $hit bikes (Hopkins, Nakano come to mind), some great up and coming guys (Melandri will challenge for the title this year, Hayden is getting there) and some VERY talented newcomers (Pedrosa, Stoner, Vermeuillen).

Can't leave out the "almost but not quite" Edwards, who probably has the most unrealised potential of all of them, though it must be tough sharing THAT garage. And then there's Gibernau :limpy: and Checa :banghead:.

I think 2006 will be even better than last season, and that is saying something. My tip is Rossi to win the title, but with fewer race wins than ever. Melandri 2nd and Hayden 3rd. Stoner will have a better year than Pedrosa and Vermeuillen, but they will get a few podiums between them.

If Rossi wasn't being challenged and enjoying it, he's the kind of guy who would have walked away by now.

Whereas MS will always be an arrogant German :stick:
When you have won 7 F1 world championships you can be as arrogant as you want. He isn't rude, he just knows he is the best. I actually think he is pretty down to earth but when you are in the position he is in it's pretty hard not to have an air of arrogance around you.

Having said that ... Rossi is better !!

both are good, MS isn't doing so well lately.

VR is a funny bloke that has time for his fans. Doesn't get the shits when he doesn't win.

Both MS and VR are legends.
Bikes are a better test of talent though as the riders normally contribute the last %10 of performance where as drivers would be lucky to contribute the last %5 all machines being equal.:stick:
I believe it will be a long time before anyone comes close to Rossi for talent.

Rossifor sure 6 world titles and still going strong

I'm sure if you put both MS and VR on a racetrack, to take turns and use the bike and then the car and average the times,VR would leave MS in his wake.

NickS, Rossi also knows he is the best, just has a more palatable way of showing it. A true judge of a person's character is how they behave in victory as well as defeat. Rossi wins that one I'm afraid. His reaction after being pinged for cleaning his grid spot at Qatar last year was a classic. He always turns his misfortune into a positive. What about how he taunted Biaggi years ago with the blow up "Claudia Schiffer" doll when Biaggi was dating Naomi Campbell? Or when him and Gibernau had the fisti-cuffs on the way to the podium and he made some wise crack about swatting flies or something. I don't think Gibernau ever recovered from that one :limp:

daza, I agree, bikes are a much better show of talent than cars. More rider input than just stomping from the gas to the brakes and turning a steering wheel once in a while.

I guess the thread was originally about who was bigger, not the bigger talent. Is it bigger fan base, bigger pay cheque, bigger impact/influence on the sport?

Here's a question: So who would you rather spend the day/weekend/week with?

Only if you look like Biaggi (or David Copperfield :nyuk: ).

Seriously though, I couldn't think of anything more boring than spending a day (or even a lunch or dinner) with Shoemaker, whereas Rossi would be a hoot, based entirely on what I have seen and read of their two personalities both on and away from the track of course.

I Think Shuey should get the gong. F1 is such a technical tour de force, there can be no doubting that it is the premier motor racing category. The fact that they are quicker than the bikes and they have to contend with pit stops and do not stop when it rains, plus a host of other strategic issues called for because the races are longer, makes Shuey to my mind the greater Icon.

MS is an arrogant German, but my wife won't hear of it. On the other hand VR seems to be a nice guy. MS has made many many "questionable" moves on opponents, but don't see the same thing with Rossi. However, whilst I don't particularly like the guy, MS is bloody good- he's won a lot of races for Ferrari on his tactics alone. All depends which way you want to look at these guys, but, although I don't him, I'd say MS is bigger, AT THE MOMENT, but when, & if, VR makes a successful transition to F1, then he could achieve anything.
Cheers, Pickles.

In Italy, Schuey and Rossi are idolised as much as the pope, now that says something, both are true champions. To say one is better than the other would not be fair. And to those who think Schumacher is cold arrogant etc etc, I think the amount of charity work he does disproves that, heck he donated a couple of million alone to the Tsunami victims, donates numerous amounts to disadvantaged kids all over the world. He may come across that way on the track, you have to be if you want to be the best

I think Rossi disproves that theory, as did Barry Sheene, Kevin Schwantz, Randy Mamola etc. Even Doohan was nice about being ruthless. If I had as much money as MS, I'd give heaps to charity as well. Better than giving it to the tax man  I think it's just the car drivers take themselves too seriously. They don't appear to be enjoying themselves like Rossi does. You can be the best and be a nice guy too.

its a hard call, they are both brilliant at what they do, but being in a motorsport backgroung, and having a motorbike license and no slouch in both, i give it to VR, as he has done it year after year in all catergories, there is a massive amount of talent in both forms of motorsport.

VR has been a complete laugh since the 250cc days, climbing fences going to the toilets at the track etc.

VR is still just like a kid at heart, but most of all he enjoys what hes doing, and his natural born talent. Puts him ahead of the rest, compairing him to mick doohan, which was a brilliant rider too.

as for MS, well hes done it too, but he just doesnt standout as much to VR, thats where the personality comes out.

i know for sure what is a harder F1 racing or Motogp, Motogp is definately harder.

Good luck to both guys this year, i hope both win another world title.

and the german thing, germany controls the automotive industry and we aint all that bad.

Dont forget we always get the Brit media spin on Schmacher.
They arent too fond of a German in an Italian car beating their Brit Motahs.

Then again, gets me why so many Aussies are Williams or Mclaren fans.

I reckon Rossi is bigger especially in Italy and Spain

I've got no respect for Schumacher, big wanker and bad sportsman. I'll never forget Jerez when Schumacher tried to wipe out Villeneuve and few years before that in Adelaide with Damon Hill.

Both are giants of their chosen sports, and looking at a sheet of statistics I guess its 50/50. Where Rossi edges Schuey out is SPORTSMANSHIP. Rossi wins fair and square, where Shu has a list of 'racing incidents' that to me are a huge turn off. Schuey takes it too far. I wish we could get a few of the F1 drivers to post their thoughts on some of his antics.

That would be awesome. I'd love to hear what Montoya & Damon Hill would say about him
