hey all, i just joined up and im thinking of gettin a VU SS ute.
i have some questions if anyone can help me out.
ill just list them so its easier to reply the answer :)
1. what is a ls1 edit? is it basically just reprograming the ecu? how much can it cost to get done?
2. what are all the terms i see used like mafless,OTRCAI (***cold air intake), UT, Maf's..... ect...dont take me wrong, i am quite mechanically minded, but not upto date with all the new stuff. im used to working on my 1971 torana if you know what i mean :p
3. is your factory warranty void if u start to modify the car? such as ecu reprogram / exhaust ect.
4.what are they like on fuel? how many km per tank (also how big is the tank)
5.i hear that the ls1 has a problem with oil consumption. why is this?
6. i see many ppl here claim to have approx 300kw. what have u guys done to achieve this?
7. whats a good nic lsd centre worth?
thats all i can think of at the moment.
i just looking around at the moment and just need a few things cleared up.
any help much appreciated!!!
cheers

1. what is a ls1 edit? is it basically just reprograming the ecu? how much can it cost to get done? Yes you are correct. Cost can vary depending on where it gets done. Call around your local area and find the going price.
2. what are all the terms i see used like mafless,OTRCAI (***cold air intake), UT, Maf's..... ect...dont take me wrong, i am quite mechanically minded, but not upto date with all the new stuff. im used to working on my 1971 torana if you know what i mean. Over The Radiator Cold Air Induction, Mafless tunes are done to romove the maf setup on th intake so an OTRCAI can be used.
3. is your factory warranty void if u start to modify the car? such as ecu reprogram / exhaust ect. This wont worry you if you are buying a VU
4.what are they like on fuel? how many km per tank (also how big is the tank). Shit if you have a heavy foot but quite good if you are light on the pedal, do highway kms and an edit also helps.
5.i hear that the ls1 has a problem with oil consumption. why is this? Some do some dont. Usually related to piston slap but not on all occasions.
6. i see many ppl here claim to have approx 300kw. what have u guys done to achieve this? Not sure but i have 318rwhp with just a cat back exhaust and OTRCAI.
7. whats a good nic lsd centre worth? No idea i havent had to replace mine yet.
Hope that helps you out a little. If not do as suggested above and the search will give you what you are after.

As someone said, there is bulk info to answer most of your questions if you use the search function on here, but you may struggle to find an answer to your question on diff centres.
FWIW I bought a 15,000km 3.46 complete centre from a VYII SS mid last year for $500, which seemed to be about the going rate. It has now done about 6,000km for me with no problems, but given that the diffs are known to be problematical it is a bit of a risk.
Apart from 3.07s which nobody wants, 3.46s are the most likely to come up as people with them in their manuals want to go to 3.73 or 3.9 but I have even seen very few of them for months on the classifieds here. If you are buying a manual VU which I assume already has the 3.46 in it and you want to do the normal thing of going to 3.73 or 3.9 then I think you will struggle to find a complete centre and will probably have to just do the gears.

UT = Uncle Tone, one of the members around here
Well done Uncle Tone - you know you've made an impact when you've become a performance acronym !!
How much is a UT worth down the quarter and is it classed as a bolton??
Anyway back to the thread topic

Mafless is when the air flow meter is removed from the intake system and the tune is done using other sensors.

extended warrenty is really a crock of **** doesnt really give you much cover unless something is to fall apart....

yeh? how do u mean? so its not an extension of the factory warranty? is it more specific?
Extended warranty aint worth the paper its printed on. Same with the Holden marketing gimmick of "Certified used vehicle" means SFA and nothings covered.

Yeh you will definitley have to read the fine print on an extended warranty policy as they often do NOT cover all the same items a factory warranty does.
Come to think of it i dont think extended warranty can be transfered to the new owner? My VU ute had an extended warranty on it from the original owner when i purchased it. I was informed that it could not be carried over to my name and i would have to take out another extended warranty policy if i wanted one. Never really cared so i didnt look into it to see if how much truth was behind it but.

Nonsense :thump: Extended Warranties make for excellent back up paper if your ever caught short in the wee room
