Just thought i would drop in an update on the avalanche as it has clocked up over 40000km. Before the 40 thou service it was starting to develop some annoying clunks in the steering. The brakes are squealing in stereo on the rear. The last 10000km have been pretty hard on the beast as we were moving out of my workshop & there was alot of trailer loads done to the tip etc. This may explain why the brakes wearing a bit faster than expected, as my trailer doesnt have them. Performance wise it has loosened up nicely & goes well. With trailer towing i dont use more than 16.8l/100 around town. The roof racks are starting to bubble a little ,so the dealer has been shown this. I dont think i am the only one with this problem. It is the solution that worries me, so maybe i will leave it alone. I dont feel like having more problems created by removing head lining etc. Tyre wise we are well on our way through our second set of so-3 bags. Will maybe crack 50000km, with all 4 tyres wearing great. I have had the rears at around 38psi even while towing. The first set i ran around 42 but they tended to wear the centers.
We have been on some pretty nasty dirt roads which the avalanche handled no problems. Just remember that the car is awd & the trailer is not, so trailer oversteer can become an issue on the dirt. Other than the above listed we have just been driving with no hassles. Oils usage for the first time has been noticeble mainly due to towing & hot weather i think. It used 450ml in 11200km. We only run castrol R 0-40 synthetic. Every servive i get them to dump the tranny pan & refill with transmax Z. At the 40k service they told me i needed the brakes done & the front pads are only $400. Also they were going to rotate my tyres & do a wheel alignment. I suppose they have to try & upsell some how. I told them not to touch my alignment or rotate my wheels, & just give me a report on my brakes. I will give them credit though , they fixed the clucking in the front end. They told me they replaced some link bushes, tightened the steering rack, & also tightened up some other front end bits which had come a little loose. The ava is like new again in the steerin feel. U tend to get used to what u have until it is fixed. With all the dirt roads i have been on it is no wonder a couple of things have come loose.
Will be cehcking brakes my self after reading some posts on here in regards to brake squeal.
Overall still very impressed & wouldnt swap it for the world, except maybe a 7lt awd special edition monaro.

Good to hear Nemo. Was it a hassle getting your racks replaced?????

We have only done 20000 kms in ours. No problems, nothing replaced. The only thing that we will have coming up pretty soon is tyres, pretty much worn out. Ours is used about 95% city driving so lots or corners / stop-start driving. Overall really happy with it, it does everything we need it to without feeling like a truck. Still intend to go back to a sedan as soon as the kids are out of prams / high chairs, but for now it's the Avalanche.

7 litre AWD Monaro ... not bloody likely :D

Quite fitting as I read this. We just had our 10K service done and the guys at Suttons Arncliffe were absolutely excellent. Those stone guard plastic type things are all getting replaced as there are a few bubbles in some of them. They are also gonna replace one of the globes from near the rear vission mirror, that is when they figure out the type of globe (apparantly it is different to Adventra, Clubsport and Cakais??)

Other than that they love the exhaust, 20" rims, and even the HUGE brakes. Gave the apprentices a woody.:flip3:

Anyway, the car goes in for a stereo over-haul this Friday.

Other than that, the car is everything we wanted it to be and much much more. Thanks to AVALANCHE for the drive before we purchased as it helped heaps.

Hi Mat, only up to the 10000k service?????? I dont think Peta is going the right way to pick u up from the station. I am sure that u can get there by going past the dump turn off around the back way. Then peta can do a fly by past the gun club on a wednesday arvo, the noise from your ava will certainly make them miss a few clays.:driving:

Hi ppl.
We've done 24,000 now and all is well.
Had the same knock in steering under full accelleration on rough bitumen - dealer said they had a tsb on that to tighten up front end - what Avalanche said I think. Had that done at the scheduled 20k service. Tyres hanging in ok - prolly another 5 to 10k outta 'em I think.
Brakes are good - though coming down Toowoomba range (with a crappy 60 and 70kph speed limit for "ordinary drivers" in "ordinary cars") it seems to ride the grooves in the discs and hums, as thugh you were driving in D9 caterpilla grooves stamped in bitumen. That is the only place I get it - maybe on Cunninghams gap too - though I can't recall having the ava there.
Have they changed the brakes on the very latest Ava's - the HSV web site says special brakes but I'm sure when I got mine they said they were AP racing brakes (VYII)? Anyway, I would like better pads I think.

Overall, extremely satisfied. It will be a real shame if they drop these awd's. It really is a niche market and they can't expect "volume" sales.
So will I hang on to mine in a couple of years, or trade in on that 7.0l AWD Monaro :D - that's too hard a decision for now. Just glad I had the opportunity to have one now

Hi Peta, u can blast past tubies from the race track, then hit the tight bumpy lefthander, run down to Wonga chuck a left & trundle past the housing estate then once u hit the tight right hander u can keep it flat past the gun club & head up the hill to the gate & blast back down just as the guys are about to line up another round of clays. then when u hit the straight do a high speed brake test, then cruise to the station & every thing will be warmed up nicely. We will have to catch up one day. Im not at the workshop anymore so email me & we will get some pics. This is just something i think about doing, i dont think i have done it before...........
