View Full Version : M6 Pressure Plates - Does this make sense??

Hi all,

A few (more than a few??) have had clutch problems with their M6 Gen III's. I'm on my 3rd plate in a std car.

Growing tired of limping into Holden Service Dept's, I asked if trhey could fit the LS2 pressure plate. I'd hoped that the LS2 part would be stronger. IF my memory is correct, the Holden Rep told me that the LS2 uses the SAME pressure plate as the LS1. Can anybody confirm this please?

Here's my point: Quoting from an extract of a media release in another forum:

The Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission has a revised clutch plate and pressure plate for transmission of increased engine torque.

Now if the L76 needs a stronger clutch to cope with the extra torque, why not the LS2 too??

Or has Holden slipped in a needed fix on the quiet? And if they have, I guess the L76 part might fit into my Gen III if the 3rd pressure plate lets go.

Each clutch haemorage has been caused by bent clutch fingers. As far as I can see, clutch fingers cannot be thrashed - they don't transmit torque (am I correct?). I am arguing that pressure plate failure is not an owner abuse issue.

usually
bent finger are caused by ...heat (plate is too hot) or the driven plate
not sliding (cocking over) on the splines
as the first is most usual and may happen over time
....abuse is listed as the cause
but
imho, a pressure plate that can't hack it will also get too hot
and voila...bent fingers
but
you will never convince Holden of that

Finger ( or diaphragm heights) will generally not alter unless dia. breaks or
bolts come loose. GM have fitted 2 different slave cyls vt-vz the short
travel will hold pressure if the self adj. in the pressure plate stops working.
(common problem) which may result in diaphragm distorting. Not abuse ....
poor design.

Thanks for the info guys. Very interesting.

But here's what I'm asking:

Does the LS2 have the same pressure plate as the LS1?

If so, any claim that they've beefed up the clutch to cope with L76 torque seems to make little sense because the LS2 of course has similar power / torque.
